Mandatory Credit: Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning Saturday afternoon, and the visiting New York Yankees defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1.
Louis Varland (3-2) allowed Cody Bellinger’s bloop single to center to open the ninth. Goldschmidt followed by smashing an 0-1 knuckle curve to left for his ninth home run of the season.
David Bednar struck out the side in the home ninth to earn his 14th save, as the Yankees earned a split of the first two games of the three-game series. Fernando Cruz (4-1) survived three walks in the eighth to get the win.
Jasson Dominguez added a solo homer for the Yankees.
Kazuma Okamoto hit a solo shot for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays loaded the bases against Cam Schlittler in the second but failed to score. They broke through with two outs in the third when Okamoto lined an 0-2 fastball down the left-field line for his second homer of the series.
Dominguez tied the game when he led off the fourth with a homer to right on a 3-2 splitter from Kevin Gausman. Dominguez was recalled from his rehabilitation assignment Saturday when Trent Grisham was put on the injured list with a strained right hamstring.
Toronto threatened in the fourth when Brandon Venezuela walked with one out and took third on Yohendrick Pinango’s double. Second baseman Jazz Chisholm’s diving catch on Charles McAdoo’s line drive kept the game tied.
Schlittler pitched around two walks that opened the home fifth with a double-play grounder and a strikeout.
Gausman retired his final 10 batters to finish with one run allowed, one hit and two walks with seven strikeouts.
Schlittler also worked seven innings in which he allowed one run, six hits and four walks with seven strikeouts.
J.C. Escarra and Ben Rice singled with two out in the eight against Toronto reliever Tyler Rogers to put runners at the corners. McAdoo made a diving grab on Dominguez’s hard grounder to first for the final out.
Cruz walked Okamoto and Jesus Sanchez to start the home eighth. Ernie Clement popped out to first on a bunt, and Valenzuela struck out. Pinango walked to load the bases before McAdoo fouled out to first.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. did not play for Toronto because of a stiff back.

Fire continues rugged schedule as Wings roll into Portland
Jun 11, 2026; Arlington, Texas, USA; The Dallas Wings bench reacts after a play against the Phoenix Mercury during the second half at College Park Center. Mandatory Credit: Chris Jones-Imagn Images The Dallas Wings and the Portland Fire are headed in different directions as they prepare to meet Saturday night in Portland.
While the Wings (8-4, 3-1 Commissioner’s Cup) have won five of their last six games, the expansion Fire (6-8, 0-4 Commissioner’s Cup) have lost their last four games.
Dallas’ only loss in its recent stretch was a rough 100-76 loss Tuesday at Minnesota, but the team’s last five wins have come by an average of 13.8 points. They bounced back from Tuesday’s loss with an 85-70 victory against visiting Phoenix on Thursday.
“We’re trying to be a resilient team,” said guard Paige Bueckers, who scored a season-high 31 points. “You’re not going to win every game in this league, but it’s all about what you do the next game, what you do the next possession, how you respond to adversity.”
Bueckers shot 14 of 20 from the floor and got plenty of help. Jessica Shepard made 7 of 8 shots, scored 17 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and led the team with seven assists. Rookie Azzi Fudd had 17 points, a season-high four assists and tied another season-high with three blocks.
“I have the opportunity to coach a really good basketball team with a lot of weapons on both ends of the floor,” Dallas coach Jose Fernandez said. “For me it’s just moving pieces around, making sure we’re well prepared and we get the ball to the right people.”
The Fire are coming off a 105-89 home loss against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces and the Wings will be their ninth opponent with a winning record. Their next game will be on the road against league-leading Minnesota on Monday.
“We have two tough games up,” Portland coach Alex Sarama said, “but it’s not all doom and gloom. It’s a long season. We’re almost a third of the way through, so there’s a lot of season left. We’re fine. We’re seeing some really good signs.”
One sign that isn’t good right now is the Fire’s rebounding. They were outrebounded 42-19 including 17-1 on the offensive glass, by the Aces. Portland ranks last in rebounds per game (28.0) and defensive rebounding percentage (68.1%).

Jun 11, 2026; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani (17) advances to third base on a hit and run against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the fourth inning at PNC Park. Mandatory Credit: Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images Star Shohei Ohtani returned to the starting lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ game against the host Chicago White Sox on Saturday.
Ohtani was slated to serve as the designated hitter and bat in the leadoff position on Saturday.
He sat out Los Angeles’ 8-2 setback in the series opener on Friday, one day after left knee inflammation caused his removal from the Dodgers’ 8-6 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Ohtani, 31, is hitting .305 with 13 homers and 40 RBIs this season. The two-way star also has a 6-2 record and a 1.06 ERA in 11 starts on the mound.

Braves place RHP Spencer Strider (elbow) on injured list
Jun 6, 2026; Cumberland, Georgia, USA; Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider (99) pitches the ball against the Pittsburgh Pirates during the first inning at Truist Park. Mandatory Credit: Jordan Godfree-Imagn Images The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Spencer Strider on the 15-day injured list Saturday with elbow inflammation.
Strider, 27, exited in the fourth inning of Friday’s 7-5 loss to the host New York Mets after experiencing soreness.
The former All-Star and 20-game winner surrendered seven runs on six hits (three homers) in three-plus innings.
Strider is 4-2 with a 5.31 ERA through eight starts this season. He has struck out 46 batters, walked 20 and given up nine home runs in 39 innings.
It is the latest setback for Strider since his All-Star campaign in 2023. He made only two starts in 2024 before season-ending elbow surgery, and he began this season on the injured list with a left oblique strain.
The Braves recalled right-hander Anthony Molina from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. Molina, 24, made one appearance earlier this season with Atlanta, tossing two hitless innings in an 8-6 win at Colorado on May 1.
