Wade Meckler's slam helps Angels throttle Rays

Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Rookie Wade Meckler slugged his first career grand slam in the first inning, and the Los Angeles Angels evened their series with Tampa Bay by pummeling the Rays 14-3 on Saturday afternoon in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Meckler went 2-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base and staked his club to a 4-0 lead before the Rays batted as the Angels breezed to their sixth win in eight games.
Mike Trout was 2-for-3 with a homer, three runs and two walks. Jo Adell ripped a three-run homer and Oswald Peraza also went deep. Donovan Walton had two hits with an RBI double and a run.
With a no-hitter in his 11th career start against the Rays four seasons ago on his resume, Reid Detmers (2-5) allowed three runs on five hits in five innings.
He fanned seven with three walks to win for the first time since April 14 at the New York Yankees.
Yandy Diaz homered in his two hits and scored twice, and Junior Caminero had two doubles, two walks and an RBI.
Drew Rasmussen (4-2) surrendered a season-high five runs on four hits to lose for the first time in five May starts. He struck out four and walked two in four innings.
The Angels took advantage of Trout’s single and Rasmussen’s two walks to set up Meckler, who entered with four RBIs on the season, for his best pro moment. He stroked a 397-foot blast to right for his second career homer and a 4-0 lead.
After a two-homer Friday, Diaz started the bottom half with his second straight leadoff shot, but Detmers escaped a bases-loaded, one-out situation.
Walton reclaimed the run in the fourth with a double that plated Meckler to make it 5-1.
Trout took reliever Casey Legumina deep for a solo shot in the next frame, cranking his team-best 14th deep ball 417 feet to left.
The Rays made it 6-3 by answering twice on Caminero’s second double and Ryan Vilade’s groundout in the bottom half, but Los Angeles reliever Sam Bachman stranded three runners on a lineout by Jonathan Aranda in the sixth.
Zach Neto stole third base in the seventh and then scored on a wild pitch, but the collision at home plate with pitcher Ian Seymour forced the shortstop out of the game.
In a seven-run ninth, Adell’s blast off the lower ring and Peraza’s homer helped account for the final margin.

Christian Scott gets first win as Mets control Marlins

Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Christian Scott pitched five effective innings for his first career win, and the New York Mets scored three runs in the fourth inning of their 6-1 victory over the visiting Miami Marlins on Saturday.
Following a pregame ceremony when former outfielder Lee Mazzilli and former manager Bobby Valentine were inducted into New York’s Hall of Fame, the Mets won their third straight for the fifth time this season.
In his 16th career start, Scott (1-0) allowed one run on five hits. The 26-year-old right-hander matched a career best by getting eight strikeouts for the third time in his career while issuing a pair of walks and throwing a season-high 96 pitches.
Mark Vientos hit a two-run double and Marcus Semien hit an RBI single in the fourth when the Mets went ahead 3-0 against Miami’s Tyler Phillips (0-1). Jared Young added a long homer in the sixth as the Mets won their second straight over the Marlins after getting swept in a three-game series in Miami last weekend.
Hayden Senger padded the lead with his first career homer in the seventh and Juan Soto delivered an RBI single later in the inning as the Mets finished with 10 hits.
Liam Hicks hit an RBI single in the fifth as the Marlins dropped their fourth straight and lost for the seventh time in 11 games. Miami also set a season high by striking out 15 times.
After pitching 3 2/3 shutout innings Sunday against the Mets, Phillips allowed three runs on six hits in five innings. The right-hander struck out two and walked one.
The Mets ran themselves out of the third before going ahead.
Following a walk by Soto and a base hit by Young, Vientos hit a double off the top of the left field fence for a 2-0 lead. Semien followed with a base hit to right after Vientos advanced to third on a groundout by rookie A.J. Ewing.
Scott struck out Owen Casissie with a runner on first in the fourth before the Mets went ahead and stranded Hicks by retiring Otto Lopez.
Cionel Perez logged a strikeout in his Mets debut in the sixth and Huascar Brazoban pitched a scoreless seventh before the Mets opened a 6-1 lead. Austin Warren fanned two with two on in the eighth and Devin Williams finished up.

Royals stunned by Rangers, suffer fifth straight loss

Mandatory Credit: Andrew Dieb-Imagn Images Ezequiel Duran dropped a walk-off, RBI single into right field, and the Texas Rangers rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to win 7-6 over the scuffling Kansas City Royals on Saturday in Arlington, Texas.
Texas trailed 6-4 entering the ninth, when Joc Pederson led off with an opposite-field homer to right off Lucas Erceg (3-3). Josh Jung and Brandon Nimmo followed with back-to-back infield singles and Jake Burger’s third hit tied the contest.
Duran, hitless in the game to that point, came through with a ball that fell in front of right fielder Jac Caglianone, allowing Nimmo to score and the Rangers to take the first two of this three-game set.
Kansas City, which has lost five straight, managed just three hits and could not take advantage of three walks allowed by Texas’ Kumar Rocker, who had a 3-0 lead when he left following the sixth inning. However, the Royals finally broke through in the seventh.
With Tyler Alexander on the Rangers mound, Isaac Collins led off by bouncing a ground-rule double into the right field corner. After going to third on Nick Loftin’s one-out single, Collins scored via Carter Jensen’s single.
The Royals tied it at 3-3 with consecutive RBI singles from Bobby Witt Jr. and Maikel Garcia, who exited later in the seventh with a hamstring strain while going from first to third on Vinnie Pasquantino’s tiebreaking double to left-center field against Jakob Junis.
Jensen then gave Kansas City some presumed insurance with his two-run homer in the eighth off Texas’ Chris Martin for a 6-3 lead.
Danny Jansen’s RBI double got the Rangers within two runs in the eighth.
The Rangers wasted no time getting to the Royals’ Seth Lugo to start the game. With one out in the bottom of the first, Jung sent a towering drive into the left field seats.
Texas made it 3-0 in the fourth thanks to some shoddy Royals defense. Burger singled and advanced on Garcia’s error on Duran’s grounder. Burger then scored via Jansen’s ground out and Duran came home on Nicky Lopez’s single.
Lugo allowed three runs — one earned — and six hits while striking out six without a walk.
Peyton Gray (1-0) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win for Texas.

Jake Mangum, Nick Gonzales help Pirates outlast Twins

Mangum’s second-inning solo home run to right center off Twins starter Bailey Ober (6-3) was his first as a Pirate, and ignited a six-run second inning which gave Pittsburgh a 7-1 lead.
Ober allowed three home runs in the first two innings, including a three-home run to Oneil Cruz in the second and a leadoff solo homer to Spencer Horwitz in the first.
The Twins answered in the third on a Kody Clemens RBI triple, and produced five runs in the fourth off Pirates starter Mitch Keller to tie the game at 7. Tristan Gray and Josh Bell each hit two-run doubles in that inning.
Clemens finished with three hits and two RBI, and was a home run short of hitting for a cycle.
Ober, who gave up eight runs (seven earned) on 12 hits and one walk and struck out three over 4 2/3 innings, couldn’t keep the game even. Mangum’s RBI single put the Pirates ahead for good. Horwitz and Bryan Reynolds each had two hits and an RBI. Konnor Griffin also had two hits.
Keller lasted just four innings after allowing seven runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out five. Yohan Ramirez (3-2) pitched the first of four scoreless innings by Pirates relievers. Pittsburgh scored a pair of key insurance runs in the seventh on an RBI single by Jared Triolo and a sacrifice fly by Reynolds.
The Twins loaded the bases with one out in the eighth and scored two runs on a bases-loaded walk to Brooks Lee issued by Mason Montgomery and a Bell ground out.
Pirates closer Gregory Soto shut the door when he induced Clemens to ground out to end the eighth. Soto walked Victor Caratini with one out in the ninth, but retired Orlando Arcia and Luke Keaschall to pick up his seventh save.
Brandon Lowe was ejected in the fourth by first base umpire Jordan Baker. The ejection stemmed from Lowe and Pirates manager Don Kelly arguing with the umpires moments earlier after Lowe was not granted a pitch challenge he asked for. Lowe was turning to head back to the dugout after flying out to right field when Baker tossed him.
