Tigers' Jack Flaherty looks to maintain momentum vs. Rangers
Jun 28, 2026; Detroit, Michigan, USA; Detroit Tigers pitcher Jack Flaherty (9) pitches in the first inning against the Houston Astros at Comerica Park. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images Following a short stint on the injured list, Detroit Tigers right-hander Jack Flaherty didn’t allow a run in his return.
He’ll look to build off that outing when his team plays the middle contest of a three-game series against Texas on Saturday afternoon in Arlington, Texas.
Flaherty recorded nine strikeouts in his five-inning start against the visiting Houston Astros on Sunday. The only negative was that Flaherty required 94 pitches to get that far. The Tigers wound up losing 7-5 in 10 innings.
“Still needed a better job to find a way to get some quick outs. Some quick outs, quicker ABs,” said Flaherty, who was on the injured list due to a left peroneal strain, a tendon injury along his lower leg. “They did a good job of getting the two strikes, and fouling some pitches off and making at-bats go a little bit longer.”
It was just the second time this season Flaherty (1-8, 4.97 ERA) had gone at least five innings without giving up a run. He started against the Rangers on May 1 and was pulled after 3 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits while issuing three walks.
In five career starts against Texas, Flaherty is 1-1 with a 4.18 ERA.
After starting their road trip with a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees, the Tigers lost the opener of this series, 10-4, on Thursday. The teams didn’t meet on Friday due to the Australia-Egypt World Cup match played at nearby AT&T Stadium.
Detroit trailed 5-0 before fifth-inning homers by Colt Keith and Hao-Yu Lee cut the deficit to two runs. The Tigers’ bullpen failed to keep them within striking range.
“We’re chasing it from behind. That’s a tough recipe, but we did give ourselves a chance,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “They were able to get out of it and then tack on runs.”
The Rangers’ victory was their seventh in the last eight games and gave them at least a share of the AL West lead for the fifth straight day. Their run total on Thursday matched their season high.
“At the end of the day, everybody in here wants to win,” said Texas outfielder Evan Carter, who went 2-for-2 with a homer off the bench. “I think everybody’s showing up in the field every single day, everybody’s got their own unique skill sets, and we go out there trying to compete and grind and do whatever we can to help the team win every single day. I think that’s a collective thing that everybody here feels. Nobody here is playing for themselves, and I think that shows on the field.”
Texas pounded out 17 hits despite not having Corey Seager, Wyatt Langford or Brandon Nimmo due to injuries. The Rangers are hopeful Nimmo can play this weekend. He sprained his AC joint when he slammed into a wall while making a catch on Sunday.
Cal Quantrill (3-0, 3.31) will start Saturday for the Rangers, who pushed fellow right-hander Kumar Rocker’s scheduled start to Sunday.
Quantrill is making his third straight start after pitching out of the bullpen for most of the season. He allowed two hits and two walks in three scoreless innings of relief in a 5-1 loss at Detroit on May 2. Quantrill is 4-2 with a 3.11 ERA in 11 games (seven starts) in his career against the Tigers.

Brandon Aiyuk takes Instagram swipe at Jayden Daniels
Jul 24, 2025; Santa Clara, CA, USA; San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (in black hoodie) watches his teammates work out during the second day of training camp. Mandatory Credit: D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images It doesn’t look like Brandon Aiyuk will be a Washington Commander after all.
After numerous social media posts in which he said he’s planning to join the Commanders, Aiyuk suddenly took public jabs at Washington’s franchise quarterback, Jayden Daniels.
In an Instagram story where he tagged Daniels’ account, Aiyuk said, “‘5′ gonna text me talking about some, ‘You’re on my team now. You follow my rules.’
“Boy, I’m a grown-ass man, boy. You gonna have to start running behind your mamma, and I might believe what you talking about. But until then, mmm-mmm.”
Aiyuk is still a member of the San Francisco 49ers, but he’s on the team’s reserve/did not report list. He’s also taken swipes at Niners general manager John Lynch and his former agent, Ryan Williams, calling them “weirdos”. Additionally, Lynch said in January that Aiyuk has played his last snap as a part of the team.
Daniels, Aiyuk’s former teammate at Arizona State, seemingly responded to the wideout with an Instagram story of Houston Rockets forward and Commanders fan Kevin Durant giving a thumbs-down to a fan earlier this year.
Aiyuk then posted a GIF of him holding up a pair of shoes with the message: “Let’s Run it 5! Let’s see! Need you available all son, and I’ll do the same!”
The back-and-forth was preceded by a viral video of a fan during a World Cup match shouting at Daniels, “F— Brandon Aiyuk! … You better not throw s— to him next year.” Daniels laughed in response.
The Athletic previously reported that the Commanders would consider a short-term deal with high incentives if Aiyuk became available, with the hopes he could rediscover his form from years ago. It’s not known if the team’s stance has changed after Aiyuk’s string of social media posts.
The 28-year-old missed all of last season due to a severe knee injury he suffered in 2024, when he posted just 25 receptions for 374 yards over seven games. However, he posted a career-high 1,342 receiving yards in 2023, and a career-high 78 catches in 2022.

Reds halt recent home woes, salvage series finale vs. O's
Jul 5, 2026; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Lodolo (40) throws against the Baltimore Orioles in the second inning at Great American Ball Park. Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-Imagn Images Spencer Steer hit a two-run home run to help the Cincinnati Reds snap a six-game home losing streak with a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
Reds starter Nick Lodolo (3-2) gave up six hits and one run in six innings. The southpaw walked two and struck out four in 97 pitches as Cincinnati salvaged the finale of the three-game series.
Cincinnati closer Emilio Page gave up a run in the ninth before nailing down his seventh save. It was his second outing since coming off the IL with a hamstring strain. His last save chance was May 4 and his last save was April 17.
Orioles starter Kyle Bradish (5-9) gave up five hits and three runs while coming up one out short of a complete game. The right-hander walked one and struck out five in 106 pitches.
Bradish was perfect through four innings, before the Reds touched him for two runs in the fifth.
Eduardo Suarez led off with a walk. Steer fell behind 0-2 before working the count full.
He then launched an opposite-field homer to right-center to get the Reds on the board.
Bradish pitched into the eighth for the third time this season and induced a season-high 11 groundouts.
Meanwhile, Lodolo scattered four hits through the first five innings to keep the Orioles scoreless.
Baltimore broke through in the sixth when Taylor Ward nailed a one-out double.
He went to third on a groundout by Pete Alonso and scored when Coby Mayo singled to cut the Orioles’ deficit to 2-1.
The Orioles loaded the bases in the sixth when Tyler O’Neill and Leody Taveras walked, but Lodolo ended the threat by striking out Jeremiah Jackson.
The Reds scored an insurance run in the eighth. Edwin Arroyo singled with one out and went to second on a wild pitch to become the first Reds runner to move into scoring position in the game.
Bradish struck out Elly De La Cruz, and Orioles manager Craig Albernaz elected to leave Bradish in to see if he could finish the eighth.
Sal Stewart, however, ripped a double inside the third base line to score Arroyo and give the Reds a two-run lead.

Naomi Osaka upsets No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to reach quarters at Wimbledon
Jul 5, 2026; London, United Kingdom; Naomi Osaka (JPN) hits a forehand against Aryna Sabalenka (not pictured) on day seven of The Championships Wimbledon 2026 at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Naomi Osaka had lost three times to Aryna Sabalenka this year but finally delivered a breakthrough victory at a really good time.
Osaka, seeded 14th, served eight aces on Sunday while recording a solid 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over World No. 1 Sabalenka at the All England Club in London to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time.
But Osaka avenged those three setbacks in style to send the top-seeded Sabalenka home and further open a draw in which defending champion and No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland and No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan have also been eliminated.
It also marked the first time Osaka won a match on Wimbledon’s famed Centre Court.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve had so much fun on the court,” Osaka said afterward. “And to do it here, it really means a lot.”
The victory was Osaka’s first over a No. 1 player since beating Ash Barty in Beijing in 2019.
Osaka clearly found motivation in the three recent losses to Sabalenka.
Sabalenka won in straight sets in the round of 16 on the hard court at Indian Wells and also was victorious twice on clay. She prevailed in three sets in the round of 16 at Madrid and in two sets in the round of 16 at the French Open.
“Going into this match, I lost to her three times in a row, so that really sucked,” Osaka said. “I wanted to turn it over, and I’m really glad I had the opportunity to do that.”
Sabalenka nearly forced a third set before Osaka won a game to force a tiebreak, which she dominated to end the match.
“Level-wise today I wasn’t world No. 1. Yesterday I was world No. 1,” Sabalenka said. “I feel like … I don’t even want to think about ranking at this point. I just want to go get completely drunk, forget about tennis, and try to get in better shape.”
Osaka will next face 10th-seeded Karolina Muchova, who recorded a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win over fellow Czech and 2024 Wimbledon champ Barbora Krejcikova. Muchova had 50 winners, including nine aces.
Also, fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula overcame a slow start to record a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Iva Jovic to advance to the quarterfinals.
Pegula, 32, rebounded after dropping a set for the first time this tournament to dispatch the 16th-seeded Jovic and improve to 8-0 against American women this year. Pegula is the highest-seeded woman left in the tournament.
Reaching the quarterfinal for the second time in four years, Pegula will take on the winner of 11th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and seventh-seeded Coco Gauff.
Trailing 4-5 in the first set, Jovic won four straight points before ultimately serving out the set before Pegula stormed back.
Pegula benefited from precise groundstrokes and limiting her miscues to change the momentum of the match.
