Naomi Osaka upsets No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka to reach quarters at Wimbledon

Naomi Osaka had lost three times to Aryna Sabalenka this year but finally delivered a breakthrough victory at a really good time.

Osaka, seeded 14th, served eight aces on Sunday while recording a solid 6-2, 7-6 (2) victory over World No. 1 Sabalenka at the All England Club in London to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time.

But Osaka avenged those three setbacks in style to send the top-seeded Sabalenka home and further open a draw in which defending champion and No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland and No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan have also been eliminated.

It also marked the first time Osaka won a match on Wimbledon’s famed Centre Court.

“It’s been a long time since I’ve had so much fun on the court,” Osaka said afterward. “And to do it here, it really means a lot.”

The victory was Osaka’s first over a No. 1 player since beating Ash Barty in Beijing in 2019.

Osaka clearly found motivation in the three recent losses to Sabalenka.

Sabalenka won in straight sets in the round of 16 on the hard court at Indian Wells and also was victorious twice on clay. She prevailed in three sets in the round of 16 at Madrid and in two sets in the round of 16 at the French Open.

“Going into this match, I lost to her three times in a row, so that really sucked,” Osaka said. “I wanted to turn it over, and I’m really glad I had the opportunity to do that.”

Sabalenka nearly forced a third set before Osaka won a game to force a tiebreak, which she dominated to end the match.

“Level-wise today I wasn’t world No. 1. Yesterday I was world No. 1,” Sabalenka said. “I feel like … I don’t even want to think about ranking at this point. I just want to go get completely drunk, forget about tennis, and try to get in better shape.”

Osaka will next face 10th-seeded Karolina Muchova, who recorded a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win over fellow Czech and 2024 Wimbledon champ Barbora Krejcikova. Muchova had 50 winners, including nine aces.

Also, fourth-seeded Jessica Pegula overcame a slow start to record a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Iva Jovic to advance to the quarterfinals.

Pegula, 32, rebounded after dropping a set for the first time this tournament to dispatch the 16th-seeded Jovic and improve to 8-0 against American women this year. Pegula is the highest-seeded woman left in the tournament.

Reaching the quarterfinal for the second time in four years, Pegula will take on the winner of 11th-seeded Belinda Bencic of Switzerland and seventh-seeded Coco Gauff.

Trailing 4-5 in the first set, Jovic won four straight points before ultimately serving out the set before Pegula stormed back.

Pegula benefited from precise groundstrokes and limiting her miscues to change the momentum of the match.

Former NFL defensive end Marcellus Wiley has been arrested on a domestic battery charge in Orange County, Fla.

He is currently being held in jail on no bond.

Wiley, 51, was taken into custody by Orange County sheriff’s deputies Saturday. No additional details were provided in jail records.

This is the latest in a string of accusations against Wiley. In May, Rolling Stone reported that four people, including a former production assistant at ESPN, had filed a lawsuit in New York that accused him of sexual assault. Three other individuals have sued him, alleging he raped them while a student-athlete at Columbia in 1994, per the article.

Wiley posted a purported court order dismissing three of the claims to his social media account in May.

Wiley played 10 seasons in the NFL. He spent his first four campaigns with the Buffalo Bills after they selected him in the second round of the 1997 NFL Draft. Wiley then played three seasons with the then-San Diego Chargers (2001-03), one with the Dallas Cowboys (2004) and two with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2005-06).

The 6-foot-4, 275-pound Wiley appeared in 147 games (79 starts) and was selected to the 2001 Pro Bowl.

Overall, he made 322 tackles (47 for loss) and had 44 sacks and five fumble recoveries in his career.

After retiring, Wiley held a variety of roles with ESPN and then Fox Sports.

Folarin Balogun of the United States men’s national team is eligible to play in its round of 16 match against Belgium following the suspension of his one-game red card ban, The Athletic reported Sunday.

The 25-year-old forward is the leading scorer for the United States with three goals. He scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the 45th minute against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday. However, he was tagged with a red card later in the 2-0 match, which triggered an automatic one-game suspension under FIFA World Cup rules.

The red card was a controversial one, with former soccer referees and other experts saying the play Balogun made on defender Tarik Muharemovic did not merit the penalty.

A red card or suspension cannot be appealed.

FIFA, however, posted this message to its website Sunday about its use of the rule book in the case: “By operation of Article 27 FDC, the implementation of the automatic match suspension for USA player Folarin Balogun is suspended for a probationary period of one [1] year.”

U.S. Soccer issued its own statement in response to the action: “We accept the decision of the Disciplinary Committee and are pleased that Folarin Balogun is eligible to complete tomorrow.

“Our full attention is focused on the Round of 16 match against Belgium in Seattle,?and we look forward to the continued support of our amazing fans.”

This move is not unprecedented in this World Cup.

Before the start of the tournament last month, Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo faced a three-match suspension. Instead, he sat one match, with the other two suspended and converted to a one-year probation period.

Balogun scored twice for the Americans in their opener against Paraguay on June 11. He added a goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina in the knockout round Wednesday in Santa Clara, Calif.

The United States will meet Belgium in the round of 16 on Monday in Seattle. The winner advances to the quarterfinals.

The U.S. has not reached that stage since 2002.

Charles Leclerc wins British Grand Prix to tighten F1 standings

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc ended a nearly two-year long winless streak and tightened up the F1 championship standings in the process Sunday, emerging victorious at the British Grand Prix.

The win was secured under caution, as Max Verstappen’s crash with four laps remaining put out the safety car, which enabled Leclerc to coast to victory without duress.

“I’m so, so happy,” Leclerc said. “It feels really good to be back on the top step.”

Leclerc had not won an F1 race since Oct. 20, 2024, the United States Grand Prix. He took home three victories that season on his way to a third-place finish.

Despite the recent dry spell, Leclerc has kept himself in the running, amassing enough points to net a fifth-place finish a season ago. The Monaco native is now running fourth in 2026, 71 points behind leader A.K. Antonelli.

“It’s not something I’ll think about just yet,” Leclerc admitted when asked about his team’s chances at finishing the season on top. “We’ll see at the end of the season.”

Antonelli’s lead on the field shrank considerably Sunday after the Italian suffered a suspension failure that took him from second with 11 laps to go all the way down to 16th.

The Mercedes driver checkered in ninth at the Silverstone Circuit but was handed a five-second penalty for running off circuit multiple times in an attempt to push his car past the finish line, leaving him points-free.

Mercedes teammate George Russell, fresh off a victory in Austria, cruised into second thanks to a decision to remain on old tires. In one race, Russell cut Antonelli’s lead in the standings from 43 points down to 25.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton, who did break for new tires, landed in third place. The result matched the Ferrari driver’s current status in the standings, where he’s now seven points behind Russell.

That could be a best-case scenario for Hamilton, who is expected to be investigated for a yellow flag infringement.

McLaren’s Lando Norris finished in fourth, while Red Bull Racing’s Isack Hadjar rounded out the top five.
