Sparks seek complete effort in rematch vs. Tempo

The Sparks (1-2) earned a 99-95 victory over the Tempo on Friday when Kelsey Plum scored 20 of her 27 points in the second half, while adding nine assists. Back from a two-season stint with the Seattle Storm, Nneka Ogwumike added 20 points.
The Sparks nearly squandered an early 19-point lead, as well as a 20-point advantage in the third quarter to the expansion Tempo when their lead dwindled to two points with 2:26 remaining. They held on by getting five points from Plum over the final 1:36.
“The goal is to put together 40 minutes,” Sparks head coach Lynne Roberts said about an early 21-2 lead before the close call at the end. “We haven’t done that yet this season, but the season’s early, we’ll get there.””
Dearica Hamby scored 19 points for Los Angeles, while Cameron Brink added 10 off the bench. Erica Wheeler also scored 10 points with seven assists while starting in place of Ariel Atkins (concussion).
After winning the first game in franchise history earlier in the week, Toronto (1-2) nearly rallied to win its first road game.
Brittney Sykes led the Tempo with 27 points against her former team, while Laura Juskaite, in her first WNBA season from Lithuania, scored 16 off the bench.
Nyara Sabally recorded 14 points and nine assists for Toronto, while rookie Kiki Rice scored 11 off the bench. After winning a national championship with UCLA last month, Rice was playing in her first professional game at Los Angeles.
The Tempo slowly chipped away at their deficit following the slow start but never led in the game.
“We were sleeping. It’s like we were already (in) bed in Toronto,” Tempo head coach Sandy Brondello said. “I have to get them more ready. That’s unacceptable. I was so proud of the fight back … but we did nothing that we had spoken about, so the starters have to do a better job come Sunday.”
After scoring at least 26 points in each of the opening two games, Marina Mabrey was held to seven points on 3-of-10 shooting, including 1 of 6 from 3-point range.

Road-tested Aces aim to spoil Dream's home opener

The reigning league champions will aim to complete the road sweep Sunday afternoon against the Atlanta Dream.
After flushing a 33-point season-opening home loss to the Phoenix Mercury, Las Vegas (3-1) posted a win over the Los Angeles Sparks before earning back-to-back victories against the Connecticut Sun.
Four-time league MVP A’ja Wilson had 45 points on Friday in the Aces’ 101-94 triumph over the Sun, going 15-for-18 from the floor.
Wilson continues to evolve as a 3-point shooter, according to head coach Becky Hammon. Wilson had a career-year behind the arc last season, shooting 42.4%, and made both of her attempts Friday, adding to her offensive arsenal.
“Her ability to step out and make someone guard her out there, you leave her open and she’s going to knock that down,” Hammon said. “She’s shooting over 40%, obviously not a high volume (4-for-7 this season). I’d like to get that volume up a little bit more, but as long as she’s shooting it efficiently, I think it puts a lot of pressure on the defense.”
Behind Wilson’s 26.3 points per game, Chennedy Carter adds 19.3 and Jackie Young averages 14.0 points and 6.0 assists per contest.
Atlanta (2-0) will make its home debut after setting a franchise record with 30 wins in 2025. The Dream went 16-6 at home in head coach Karl Smesko’s first year at the helm.
The game is sold out.
Atlanta has picked up a pair of road wins to begin the year, despite a lackluster shooting performance. The team is shooting just 40.1% from the field and has made only 16 of its 62 (25.8%) 3-point attempts.
“We realize that if we’re going to beat Vegas, we’re probably going to have to shoot the ball better than we have so far,” Smesko said. “I’m hoping to continue to see the improvement of one or two things that we really want to see get better for the Vegas game and hopefully that can make the difference.”
Allisha Gray is averaging a team-high 25.0 points per game, while Jordin Canada chips in 15.5. Offseason addition Angel Reese has posted 11.5 points and 15.0 boards through her first two games with Atlanta.

Blue Jays RHP Jose Berrios to have surgery for elbow fracture

Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Jose Berrios will undergo surgery on his pitching elbow Wednesday to address a stress fracture as well as potential loose bodies or ligament issues, MLB.com reported on Saturday.
Berrios, 31, has been dealing with the injury since early in spring training. He has yet to pitch in the majors this season.
“There may be some ligament stuff going on,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said on Saturday. “They’re going to figure that out when they’re in there.”
Inflammation in Berrios’ elbow initially was discovered during a routine MRI for insurance purposes when he was still hoping to play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic.
Berrios went 9-5 with a 4.17 ERA in 31 games (30 starts) last season, which included his first-ever stint on the injured list in late September with elbow inflammation. He missed the entire postseason, with Toronto losing the World Series in seven games to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Berrios is 108-82 with a 4.08 ERA in 275 career games (273 starts) for the Minnesota Twins (2016-21) and Blue Jays.

Missouri RB Ahmad Hardy hoping to leave hospital Monday

Mandatory Credit: Jay Biggerstaff-Imagn Images Missouri running back Ahmad Hardy is in “good spirits” after being shot in the leg at a concert last weekend and hopes to check out of the hospital on Monday, Tigers head coach Eli Drinkwitz told ESPN on Saturday.
Hardy, an All-American last season, returned to Columbia, Mo., earlier this week following the incident on May 10 at an outdoor concert in Mississippi.
Drinkwitz said Hardy still is in the hospital to monitor his wounds post-surgery, but he is walking and doing physical therapy three times a day, per ESPN.
On Thursday, police arrested Rashodrick Harris in Paducah, Ky., in connection with the shooting in Laurel, Miss.
Hardy, 20, is a Mississippi native. He began his career at Louisiana-Monroe, where he was named the 2024 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year after he led the conference in rushing yards (1,351) and rushing touchdowns (13) on 237 attempts.
He transferred to Missouri, where he ranked second among FBS players with 1,649 rushing yards last season, a mark that broke the Tigers’ single-season record. He earned SEC Newcomer of the Year honors, was a finalist for the Doak Walker Award and a consensus All-American while scoring 16 TDs and averaging 6.4 yards on his 256 rushing attempts.
