Ronda Rousey put a noteworthy capper on an incredible MMA career Saturday night when she forced Gina Carano into submission in 17 seconds.

On Sunday, Rousey, 39, revealed what she’d shared with Carano immediately prior to making short work of her in the ring.

“I told her, ‘I respect you and I’m breaking your arm,'” Rousey said. “No contradiction there. I was hoping to come out as unscathed as possible. I didn’t really want to hurt her. It was beautiful. It felt like the magic was back.”

Rousey, who announced her return to retirement following the win, took Carano down quickly, then evaded a Carano guillotine attempt before landing a few strikes from mount and locking in the inevitable submission.

Rousey-Carano capped off Netflix’s MMA debut, as Rousey, the inaugural UFC bantamweight champion, and Carano, 44, each made their return to the sport following long retirements. Rousey won with her signature armbar in the featherweight fight at Inglewood, Calif., at Most Valuable Promotions’ first MMA event.

It was the fourth victory in under 35 seconds for Rousey, who improved to 13-2-0 in MMA while securing her 10th submission win.

“There’s no way I could’ve ended it better than this,” Rousey added. “This is a storybook ending if this is the end of my book as a fighter. I never thought I would come back. It didn’t cross my mind at all. But getting back into it reminded me of the joy that it gave me from the very beginning.

“Gina brought me into this sport, and she brought me back to it. We both needed to reclaim our bodily identity and rewrite our own ending together. It lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. I feel like I got the closure I needed.”

Kurt Kitayama shot a 63 to tie the record for the lowest score in the final round of a major tournament on Sunday at the PGA Championship.

The 33-year-old Kitayama, who has three top-10 finishes this season, is the only player to shoot better than 65 this week at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pa.

Kitayama is the ninth player to shoot a 63 in the final round of a major and matched two players who won their majors with a 63 on Sunday: Johnny Miller at the U.S. Open in 1973 at Oakmont Country Club and Henrik Stenson of Sweden who won The Open Championship in 2016 at Royal Troon.

The lowest score in any round of a major is 62, first accomplished by Branden Grace of South Africa in the third round of The Open in 2017 at Royal Birkdale; Jordan Spieth won the title.

Xander Schauffele shot a 62 twice since — at the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in 2024 and at the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023. Schauffele won at Valhalla. Wyndham Clark won at Los Angeles.

Kitayama guaranteed himself a significantly higher payday on Sunday as he climbed 50 places up the leaderboard to finish the championship at 3-under 277. He was three shots back of leader Alex Smalley, who was set to tee off at 2:35 p.m. ET alongside Matti Schmid of Germany.

Schmid was one of five players who were two strokes back of Smalley at 4-under. Kitayama was tied with four players — including majors winners Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Reed — at 3-under.

Kitayama has two PGA Tour victories: the 2025 3M Open and the 2023 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

His best finish at a major came at the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club, when he was T4 after a final-round 65.

Canadian Leylah Fernandez handled France’s Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 7-5 in the headlining match Sunday at the Strasbourg Open in Strasbourg, France.

The No. 23 player in the world, Fernandez was the highlight on Day 1 of the traditional French Open lead-in tournament, saving eight of nine break points on the clay surface to win in 1:39.

Fernandez was also 5-of-10 in return games won, compared to 1-of-9 by her opponent. Seeded seventh, the 23-year-old Fernandez will face Magdalena Frech of Poland or qualifier Talia Gibson of Australia in the next round.

Three Americans advanced on Sunday, as Ann Li controlled Australia’s Maya Joint 6-1, 6-2, Peyton Stearns cruised past Greece’s Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-1 and Emma Navarro downed the Czech Republic’s Sara Bejlek 6-1, 6-4.

In the other first-round match, France’s Lois Boisson was able to close out China’s Wang Xinyu 6-3, 7-6 (4) to set up a second-round match with top-seeded Victoria Mboko of Canada.

The Los Angeles Angels activated Grayson Rodriguez from the injured list in advance of the right-hander’s debut with the club in a home start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday.

In a corresponding move, the Angels optioned right-hander Alek Manoah to Triple-A Salt Lake.

Rodriguez, 26, was acquired in a trade with the Baltimore Orioles this past offseason for outfielder Taylor Ward. The former first-round draft pick (11th overall) by the Orioles in 2018 did not pitch last season after elbow surgery.

In parts of two major league seasons, Rodriguez is 20-8 with a 4.11 ERA in 43 starts between 2023 and 2024. He pitched 12 2/3 innings for the Angels in spring training before going on the IL with shoulder inflammation.

During two minor league rehab outings, he had a 2.79 ERA over 9 2/3 innings. He fanned 18 batters and only walked a pair.

Manoah, 28, was rocked for nine runs (eight earned) over 1 1/3 innings on Saturday against the Dodgers. It was his third outing with the Angels after missing more than a month at the start of the season with a right middle finger contusion.

Manoah, who spent his first four major league seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays, is 29-20 with a 3.45 ERA in 78 career appearances (75 starts).
