Rogers Communications ups stake in Raptors, Leafs, Toronto FC

Mandatory Credit: Eric Bolte-Imagn Images Rogers Communications will become the majority owner of MLSE — the parent company of franchises including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors — after agreeing to buy 37.5 percent of the organization.
Rogers announced Wednesday that the acquisition, which is expected to close in mid-2025, will double its interest in Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment to 75 percent ownership. Rogers is paying about $3.5 billion in U.S. dollars to purchase the stake from Bell Canada Enterprises.
MLSE also is the parent company of Toronto FC of Major League Soccer and the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League.
Rogers owns the Toronto Blue Jays, exclusive of this deal.
The deal is pending approval from each league.
In a news release, Bell said it will use the proceeds to reduce its debt and to help pay for its transition from a telecommunications to a technology company.
“We are proud of our time as co-owners of these iconic sports teams, and through this agreement have ensured that fans can count on Bell’s continued support of their teams,” Mirko Bibic, the company CEO, said in a statement. “Today’s announcement demonstrates that we are focused on creating the financial flexibility to support our ongoing transformation and core growth drivers.”
As part of the deal, Bell and Rogers agreed TSN will retain the broadcast rights to the Maple Leafs, Raptors, Argonauts and Toronto FC games.
Rogers and Bell joined forces to buy the majority of MLSE from the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan for less than $2 billion in 2012. Now, the Maple Leafs alone are valued at an NHL-high $2.65 billion, per Sportico.
“MLSE is one of the most prestigious sports and entertainment organizations in the world and we’re proud to expand our ownership of these coveted sports teams,” Rogers CEO Tony Staffieri said, per Sportico. “MLSE continues to appreciate significantly, and together with our sports and media assets, we plan to surface more value for shareholders long-term.”

Mandatory Credit: William Liang-Imagn Images Defensive end Myles Garrett’s revised deal with the Los Angeles Rams includes a $5.5 million raise for this season, according to numbers reported by multiple outlets Wednesday.
The two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year was acquired by the Rams in a June 1 trade that sent Pro Bowl pass rusher Jared Verse and three draft picks, including a first-round selection in 2027, to the Cleveland Browns.
Garrett’s restructured five-year, $208.2 million deal includes $37 million fully guaranteed in 2026 and $99 million guaranteed through the 2028 season along with a signing bonus and multiple option bonuses, according to Spotrac.
Garrett’s revised cap numbers include $8.8 million in 2026, $15.0 million in 2027, $27.6 million in 2028, $39.9 million in 2029 and $48.2 million in 2030, with another $39.9 million not scheduled to count against the cap until after the contract voids in February 2031, according to NFL Network.
His salary for the upcoming season climbs from $31.5 million to $37 million, per the reports.
The Rams have become a heavy favorite to win Super Bowl LXI, which will be played in their own stadium in February 2027. The last time the Rams won a Super Bowl after the 2021 season, it was also in their stadium in Inglewood, Calif.
Garrett, 30, had an NFL-record 23 sacks for the Browns last season. His 125.5 career sacks equate to an average of 15.9 per season. He also led the league with 33 tackles for loss last season.
The five-time All-Pro selection was the first overall draft pick of the Browns in 2017 and had 412 tackles, 149 tackles for loss and 239 quarterback hits in 134 games (131 starts) with Cleveland.

Morris, 25, is looking for more playing time after starting a total of 16 games during his first three seasons.
The 6-foot-6, 307-pound tackle has appeared in 43 games since the Chiefs drafted him in the third round in 2023.
Morris won a Super Bowl championship during his rookie campaign but made only one start last season.

Sceptres hire Pascal Rheaume as new head coach

Rheaume, 52, most recently was an assistant coach with the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders for the last two seasons.
He replaces Troy Ryan, Toronto’s inaugural coach who left last month to coach expansion side PWHL San Jose.
“Pascal brings a fresh perspective, a new voice, and valuable professional experience to our organization,” Sceptres general manager Gina Kingsbury said.
“Pascal is known for his commitment to hard work and fostering a close-knit locker room. We believe Pascal’s leadership, experience, and approach to player development will have a tremendous impact on our group as we continue to build and strive towards new heights as a professional organization.”

Rheaume arrives with more than 14 years of coaching experience following a nine-year NHL career with six teams from 1997-2005. The forward won a Stanley Cup with the New Jersey Devils in 2002-03.
