Willy Adames had three hits, including an RBI single as part of a two-run eighth inning, Trevor McDonald combined with two relievers on a three-hitter and the San Francisco Giants outlasted the visiting Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

After the teams traded single tallies in the first four innings, the Giants manufactured the difference-making runs after Rafael Devers worked a walk from Rockies reliever Antonio Senzatela (9-2) in the eighth.

After Jung Hoo Lee flied out, Bryce Eldridge sent Devers to third with a single and was replaced at first by pinch-runner Grant McCray, who stole second base on the next pitch. When catcher Hunter Goodman’s throw went into center field for an error, Devers jogged home with the go-ahead run.

Adames then followed with his third single of the game, chasing home McCray from third.

Erik Miller (2-0), who struck out Mickey Moniak with the score tied and a runner at second to end the top of the eighth, earned the win. The left-hander stayed on for the ninth, preserving the two-run advantage despite surrendering a leadoff single to Goodman.

Seeking a 2-2 split in the series, the game got off to an exciting start for the Rockies when Jake McCarthy launched an inside-the-park home run on McDonald’s second pitch. The blast to right-center field only momentarily bounced away from right fielder Lee, giving McDonald just enough time to race home ahead of the throw.

The homer was McCarthy’s 10th of the season.

That was the only run the Rockies could muster against McDonald, who allowed just three hits in seven innings. He walked one and struck out four.

The Giants got even in the fourth when, with two outs, Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen walked Eldridge and served up consecutive singles to Adames and Drew Gilbert, the latter plating the run.

Lorenzen was pulled after five innings, having given up just the one run and five hits. He struck out one and walked three.

Heliot Ramos chipped in with two hits for the Giants, who took three of four from the Rockies to even the season series at 5-5.

Goodman had two of Colorado’s four total hits in a game that featured no extra-base hits after McCarthy’s leadoff blow.

Four teams advanced Wednesday to the Dota 2 playoffs at the Esports World Cup in Park, including Vici Gaming, which won its first survival stage match by forfeit and then a second-rounder in conventional fashion.

The other teams advancing to the quarterfinal playoffs on Thursday and Friday are BetBoom Team, Team Spirit and Rune Eaters.

Vici Gaming was scheduled to face PlayTime on Tuesday in the first round of the survival stage but the match was postponed until Wednesday because of an undisclosed integrity issue.

The Esports Integrity Commission, a partner of the Esports World Cup 2026, then announced an ongoing investigation. The ESIC issued provisional suspensions to PlayTime’s Juan “Vintage” Angulo and Gonzalo “DarkMago” Herrera, both of Peru.

“With immediate effect, Vintage and DarkMago are prohibited from participating, directly or indirectly, in EWC26 and all ESIC Member events while the investigation remains ongoing,” the ESIC said in a statement. “In Vintage’s case, the interim measure also prevents him from undertaking coaching, management, strategic, team-facing or other support functions connected with participating teams or players.”

Emphasizing that no final determination of guilt has been made, the ESIC said the suspensions followed its “preliminary assessment of information concerning suspected breaches of the ESIC Anti-Corruption Code and Player Code of Conduct.”

Angulo and Herrera were interviewed and notified of the interim measures, the ESIC said.

PlayTime, also known at PTime, was removed from the tournament on Wednesday because it was not able to meet eligibility requirements, according to reports, and forfeited its match against Vici Gaming.

The Dota 2 event at the Esports World Cup is the final championship of the ESL Pro Tour, now in its fourth season. The tournament has a $2 million prize pool, with $750,000 and 1,000 club points going to the first-place team.

The format consists of three phases: a group stage of 24 teams that competed in a round robin, a survival phase (Tuesday-Wednesday) formatted into a single-elimination bracket that saw four teams advance, then a final playoff stage (Thursday-Sunday), which is single elimination.

The four group winners advanced directly to the playoffs. Teams finishing second in their groups received byes into Round 2 of the survival stage, while third- and fourth-place teams began the survival stage in Round 1.

All matches in Phase 1 were two games, while the matches in Phases 2 and 3 are best-of-three until the best-of-five grand final.

On Wednesday, BetBoom Team swept LGD Gaming in 48 minutes and 28 minutes, both on green.

Team Spirit opened with a win in 56 minutes on green before Team Liquid drew level with a 46-minute victory on green. Team Spirit closed out with a 45-minute win, also on green.

Rune Eaters outlasted Aurora Gaming in 51 minutes on red, then won in 39 minutes on green to take the second-round match.

Vici Gaming actually got to play and eliminated 1w, 2-1. The first map went to 1w in 42 minutes on red, then Vici Gaming responded with wins in 45 and 63 minutes, both on red.

The Esports World Cup features competition in 25 titles and a $75 million prize pool. Other upcoming events include League of Legends, PUBG, EA Sports FC, Call of Duty: Warzone, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, Rocket League, Counter-Strike 2 and Fortnite.

The Portland Timbers will have a fresh face on their bench when they return from the World Cup break to face the host Seattle Sounders on Thursday night in a Cascadia Cup clash.

The Timbers (4-8-2, 14 points) parted ways with coach Phil Neville after a 3-1 loss to visiting San Jose heading into the break that extended their winless streak to three matches (0-2-1). Jack Cassidy, 36, who is in his first year as coach of the Timbers’ MLS Next Pro team Timbers2, will take over on an interim basis until a new coach is found.

“Jack has impressed in his first year with Timbers2 and (we) see this is the right temporary staffing structure until we complete the coaching search,” Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy said in a news release.

The Timbers went 27-31-24 in two-plus seasons under Neville, losing in the wild-card round in 2024 and the first round of the playoffs in 2025.

Kevin Kelsy leads the Timbers in goals and is tied for second on the team in assists (three), with Kristoffer Velde adding four goals and three helpers. The Timbers, who are just 1-6-1 on the road, have conceded 28 goals while scoring 22.

The Sounders (7-3-3, 24 points) had a nine-match MLS unbeaten run snapped with losses to both Los Angeles teams heading into the break. They took their first home loss of the campaign in a 2-0 defeat to the Galaxy, then dropped a 1-0 decision at Los Angeles FC.

Behind defender Jackson Ragen, who was named a reserve for the MLS All-Stars for their match against the Liga MX All-Stars on July 29 in Charlotte, the Sounders are tied for the league lead with only 11 goals allowed. Paul Rothrock has a team-high four goals for Seattle, which has tallied just 17 times, 13th out of 15 Western Conference teams.

The Sounders have ruled out U.S. international Cristian Roldan after reaggravating a right quad injury he sustained in training during the World Cup. Roldan didn’t appear in any of the Americans’ matches, including their two played in Seattle.

As difficult as that might have been for Roldan, keeping the ultra-competitive midfielder out of a Cascadia Cup match might be just as daunting for the Sounders.

“It’ll be impossible. An unforgettable bashing of skulls,” Sounders general manager Craig Waibel joked. “There is going to have to be some rest somewhere.”

Bryson DeChambeau will bring the latest in technology to a 137-year-old golf course this week, and into a major tournament that is even older.

DeChambeau is set to debut a full set of 3D-printed irons for 154th Open Championship, which starts Thursday at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, Front Office Sports reported Tuesday.

DeChambeau has used single 3D-printed clubs in the past, playing in this year’s Masters with a 5-iron built under computer control. According to the report, DeChambeau said the full set of irons was recently approved by the United States Golf Association.

A two-time U.S. Open winner (2020, 2024), DeChambeau did not make the cut in any of the three major tournaments already played this year. That comes after he had top-10 finishes at last year’s Masters, PGA Championship and Open Championship.

Currently a member of LIV Golf, DeChambeau won tournaments in Singapore and South Africa in back-to-back weeks in March.
