The Chicago White Sox selected a player with a familiar name with the No. 34 choice in Saturday’s Major League Draft when they chose infielder Landon Thome from Nazareth Academy outside Chicago.

Landon Thome is the son of Hall of Famer Jim Thome, who works for the White Sox as a special assistant to general manager Chris Getz. The younger Thome was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Illinois.

According to the White Sox, Landon Thome batted .535 with seven homers, 29 RBIs, 57 runs and was successful on 49 of 50 steal attempts as a high school senior.

The elder Thome also helped coach Nazareth Academy, which is located roughly 15 miles to the west in the suburb of La Grange Park, Ill.

The Pirates traded infielder Jacob Gonzalez and right-hander Brandon Eisert to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday to obtain the 34th pick.

Landon Thome was a shortstop in high school but has the ability to also play second or third base. That versatility is key because the White Sox selected UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky with the No. 1 overall pick of Saturday’s draft.

Jim Thome 55, ranks eighth in baseball history with 612 homers over 22 seasons and the five-time All-Star spent 13 of the campaigns with Cleveland. However, he spent 3 1/2 seasons (2006-09) with the White Sox and hit at least 34 homers in all three of the full seasons.

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2018.

Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Justin Wrobleski was added to the National League All-Star team Saturday as a replacement for Cincinnati Reds right-hander Chase Burns.

Burns last pitched for the Reds on Wednesday but still was not in line to pitch in Tuesday’s All-Star Game at Philadelphia.

Wrobleski, 25, becomes the sixth Dodgers player on the NL roster, which will be managed by Los Angeles skipper Dave Roberts.

Wrobleski was tied for the NL lead in wins when All-Star Game rosters were announced earlier this week but still was not included on the squad. He said he was well aware of the roster numbers crunch but was still going to use the snub as motivation.

“I mean, you want to be an All-Star, and I felt like I did enough to kind of put myself in that conversation, if not be there,” Wrobleski said last week. “To not get the selection, yeah, it definitely adds some fuel to the fire for the rest of this year. Go out there every outing and prove that I’m worthy of that, and that I’m going to be one of those guys moving forward.”

Wrobleski is 10-2 with a 2.69 ERA over 16 appearances (15 starts) this season. He made an appearance in Game 7 of last October’s World Series, delivering 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief while replacing Shohei Ohtani in the third inning as the Dodgers trailed the Toronto Blue Jays 3-0. Los Angeles rallied to win the title in 11 innings.

Burns, 23, is 11-1 with a 2.54 ERA in 18 starts during his first full season in the major leagues.

The second overall selection in the 2024 draft has already reached 102 2/3 innings on the season. That is just shy of his combined 109 1/3 innings between the major leagues and minor leagues last season, which was his first on the field as a professional.

The Reds still will be represented at the All-Star Game by rookie infielder Sal Stewart.

Esmerlyn Valdez delivered a go-ahead grand slam to help the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-6 win against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Braxton Ashcraft allowed five runs of five hits and struck out six in five innings for the Pirates. Gregory Soto got out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth for the save.

Brewers starter Brandon Sproat surrendered three runs on two hits, fanning three, before he was lifted after the third.

Valdez, who had six RBIs, connected for his second home run of the game in the seventh to put Pittsburgh ahead 7-6. Henry Davis singled against Chad Patrick, who was then replaced by Aaron Ashby (12-2).

Ashby gave up back-to-back singles to load the bases before Valdez mashed a sinker to right.

Down a run, Milwaukee rallied in the fifth to grab the lead.

Luis Lara doubled and then scored to tie the game 3-3, when Cooper Pratt followed with a double of his own.

Sal Frelick launched a two-run shot to the right field deck to put the Brewers ahead 5-3.

They added another in the seventh off Carmen Mlodzinski (6-3). William Contreras knocked a single to bring Garrett Mitchell in from second and make it 6-3.

The Pirates capitalized on a shaky start by Sproat to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

Sproat caught Jake Mangum with a fastball off the foot to lead off the frame and, two batters later, a curveball dipped down and grazed off Bryan Reynolds’ left foot. Valdez followed with a single that drove in Mangum.

Reynolds and Valdez each advanced on a wild pitch before Reynolds came scored on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz on a hit from Nick Gonzales.

The Brewers responded in the second. After Contreras opened with a double to left, Jake Bauers hit a home run to right field to tie the game.

Pittsburgh went ahead 3-2 the bottom of the third when Valdez smashed a two-out cutter to dead center for his eighth home run of the season.

Rookie star Olivia Miles didn’t miss a beat in her return from a calf injury, scoring 23 points and propelling the Minnesota Lynx to a 90-85 victory over the New York Liberty Saturday afternoon in Minneapolis.

Miles made four 3-pointers and Kayla McBride made five as she lit up the scoreboard for a team-high 25 points as the Lynx (17-6) won their second straight.

Natasha Howard (16) and Courtney Williams (12) finished in double figures as well.

A valiant comeback effort fell short for the Liberty (13-10) despite 25 points from Sabrina Ionescu. Breanna Stewart scored 17, Jonquel Jones finished with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds while Marine Johannes chipped in 14 as New York, which has lost two straight.

Up 42-32 at halftime, Minnesota kept things rolling in its favor in the third, using an 8-0 run for a 54-39 lead with 5:41 to go. Three-pointers from Miles and Howard highlighted the run.

But with 2:07 left in the quarter, the Liberty pulled with 56-54 thanks to a 15-2 run, with back-to-back 3-pointers from Johannes pulling New York within two.

The Liberty got their first lead of the half at 59-58 on a couple of free throws from Ionescu with 54 seconds to go and had a one-point edge going into the fourth.

The Lynx took the lead back with 8:18 left on two free throws from Miles, making it 66-65, but Johannes hit a 3-pointer to put the Liberty back on top.

Howard’s two free throws gave Minnesota a 74-72 edge with 6:13 to go.

New York could have tied the game at 81-81 with 3:05 left but Jones split two free throws and McBride went on to hit a 3-pointer to push the Lynx back up 84-80 with 2:43 remaining. Minnesota never looked back.

The Lynx missed nine of their first 10 shots in the game and trailed 11-7 before flipping the momentum in their favor, closing the opening quarter on a 12-2 run.

Williams sparked the burst with a jumper at the 3:29 mark and Howard put an exclamation point on it, scoring as time expired for a 17-13 lead.

The run carried into the second quarter as Antonia Delaere knocked down an open 3-pointer for a 20-13 advantage with 8:48 to play in the half.

Miles punctuated the half with a couple of 3-pointers, her last coming with one second remaining as she shot over a defender and got the ball to fall through the net, giving Minnesota a 10-point lead at the half.
