UConn G Solo Ball nursing foot injury, uncertain for title game
Apr 4, 2026; Indianapolis, IN, USA; UConn Huskies guard Solo Ball (1) dunks against the Illinois Fighting Illini during the second half of a semifinal of the Final Four of the men’s 2026 NCAA Tournament at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images UConn guard Solo Ball’s availability for Monday’s national championship game against Michigan is in question as he deals with “some type of a foot sprain,” per head coach Dan Hurley.
Hurley told reporters that Ball was in a walking boot and will not practice Sunday, one day after the Huskies’ 71-62 victory over Illinois in the Final Four.
“It’s going to be tough to get an MRI on Easter, on a Sunday,” Hurley said.
Ball contributed 13 points and two assists in 28 minutes during the win over the Fighting Illini. The 6-foot-4 guard is averaging 12.9 points and 3.1 rebounds in 38 games (all starts) this season for UConn, which will vie for its third national title in four years Monday.
If Ball is unable to play, it likely would put more of the onus on freshman guard Braylon Mullins. Malachi Smith and Jayden Ross likely will see additional playing time as well.

With trade deadline approaching, Hunter Goodman and Rockies take on Royals
Jul 28, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman (15) tags out San Diego Padres catcher Luis Campusano (12) attempting to score during the second inning at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: David Frerker-Imagn Images Hunter Goodman wasn’t picked to compete in the Home Run Derby during All-Star Week, but he has plenty of suitors now.
Goodman, the Colorado Rockies’ power-hitting catcher, is drawing interest from several teams ahead of Monday’s trading deadline. For now he is still with Colorado and is expected to be in the lineup when the Rockies open a three-game home series against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.
Colorado will send Tomoyuki Sugano (10-4, 4.69 ERA) to the mound against Kansas City’s Michael Wacha (5-7, 3.60).
Sugano, who is 1-1 with a 2.38 ERA in two career starts against the Royals, has helped the Rockies improve on their 119-loss season in 2025. So have Mickey Moniak, Jake McCarthy and Goodman, three of the most rumored Colorado players in trade scenarios.
Goodman, who leads the team with 31 home runs and 60 RBIs, has drawn the most buzz when it comes to possible trade partners. The 26-year-old catcher set the franchise record for home runs by a catcher in 2025 with 31, and he tied it in fewer than 100 games this season. He is poised to break his own record – should he still be on the roster this weekend.
Colorado has not ignored the rumors and talk about players being dealt.
“We talk about it openly,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said. “It’s just a thing that might happen, and everybody knows it. It’s not like you pretend it’s not happening. These are human beings and their lives might change [over the next] couple of days here.”
The Royals are also expected to be sellers before Monday. They are coming off a tough 4-3 loss in Minnesota on Thursday afternoon when Kody Clemens hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, and one of their movable players is Wacha.
The right-hander, who is 2-2 with a 5.11 ERA in nine career appearances – eight starts – against Colorado, was an All-Star this season and is pitching well. He has just one win since May 9 but has tossed at least six innings in 10 of his 13 starts since beating Detroit 11 weeks ago.
Wacha, along with Seth Lugo, are veterans in their mid-30s and would hold value for a team needing to bolster its staff for a playoff chase. That doesn’t mean Kansas City general manager J.J. Picollo is compelled to move either one.
“We have to be very, very pointed on what we want to get out of any one of those two,” Picollo said recently. “And it’s also, they made a commitment to us, and that’s big. And I think that’s important to the morale of the team.”
Both teams are dealing with injuries to key players ahead of their weekend matchup. The Royals placed shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (low back) on the 10-day injured list on July 22 – retroactive to July 21 – and he is eligible to be activated Friday.
Rockies third baseman Kyle Karros missed the two-game series in San Diego earlier this week with right biceps inflammation but has not required a trip to the IL.

Trade talk circling as Tigers open series vs. Athletics
Jul 5, 2026; Arlington, Texas, USA; Detroit Tigers manager A.J. Hinch (14) walks of the field after a pitching change during the seventh inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field. Mandatory Credit: Raymond Carlin III-Imagn Images The Detroit Tigers are seven games below .500 and rating as big disappointments as the trade deadline nears.
A strong performance against the free-falling Athletics may be a necessity to avoid at least a partial teardown as the Tigers open the three-game set on Friday night at West Sacramento, Calif.
Detroit was part of the playoff field the past two seasons but stands 4 1/2 games behind the Cleveland Guardians, who currently hold the American League’s third wild-card spot. Four other teams are between the Tigers and Guardians.
Detroit ace left-hander Tarik Skubal has been the topic of many trade rumors. The two-time AL Cy Young winner is slated to become a free agent following the season.
Skubal is well aware that his Wednesday outing might have been his final one for the Tigers. He took a 7-0 lead into the seventh inning before tiring, and Detroit ended up losing 10-9 in 12 innings to the Baltimore Orioles.
“It’s been a helluva ride,” said Skubal, sounding as if he expects to be elsewhere by Monday. “I wouldn’t change anything, wouldn’t change one bit of it, just my whole story, my whole life. It made me who I am, and I appreciate that.
“It is a little nostalgic, right? I don’t really like thinking like that. Hopefully there’s a lot more in the future, too. It’s cool nonetheless.”
The Tigers are expected to call up No. 1 prospect Max Clark from Triple-A Toledo prior to the opener. The outfielder is the No. 13 prospect in the big leagues, according to MLB Pipeline.
Clark, the No. 3 overall pick in 2023, was batting .276 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs in 90 games at Toledo.
Detroit traded catcher Jake Rogers to the Orioles on Thursday for minor-league right-hander Zane Barnhart. Rogers had been designated for assignment by the club on Tuesday.
The Athletics have dropped five of six games and 26 of 33 after falling 5-4 to the visiting Boston Red Sox on Thursday.
All-Star first baseman Nick Kurtz (left forearm) was in the lineup after an MRI exam came back clean. He went 0-for-4 with a walk one day after being plunked by Red Sox left-hander Patrick Sandoval on Wednesday night.
“Everything was clean on the MRI,” Athletics manager Mark Kotsay told reporters. “Outside of just the bruising in the area, he feels strong and feels good. We escaped one there.”
Kurtz is in a 1-for-34 slump over his past 11 games.
Right-hander Casey Mize (4-6, 2.70 ERA) takes the mound for the Tigers in the opener. He is winless over his last three starts (0-1).
Mize pitched well against the Kansas City Royals last Saturday when he gave up one run and three hits over six innings.
Mize, 29, is 0-2 with a 10.80 ERA in two career starts against the Athletics. He served up four homers over 8 1/3 innings. Kurtz (2-for-2, one walk) has reached base in all three of his plate appearances against Mize, the No. 1 overall pick in 2018.
Left-hander Jeffrey Springs (3-10, 6.23) is winless over his last 17 starts after winning his first three decisions this season.
Springs lasted just 1 1/3 innings during last Sunday’s 11-8 loss to the Minnesota Twins. He gave up five runs (four earned) and four hits over 1 1/3 innings.
Springs, 33, lost to the Tigers on July 8 when he gave up six runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings. He served up a three-run homer to Spencer Torkelson and a two-run blast to since-traded Rogers.
Springs is 2-2 with a 2.95 ERA in four career starts against Detroit. Torkelson has taken Springs deep twice and Gleyber Torres also has hit one off him.

Giants rookie Daniel Susac hopes to find HR stroke again vs. Padres
Jul 30, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; San Francisco Giants catcher Daniel Susac (6) rounds the bases after hitting a two-run home run during the second inning against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Mandatory Credit: Denis Poroy-Imagn Images Rookie Daniel Susac didn’t hit a home run in his first 44 major league games.
The San Francisco Giants’ catcher now has three in the past two games after his two-run blast Thursday night fueled his team’s 4-1 win over the San Diego Padres, giving them a nice start to a seven-game road trip.
Susac will try to keep his power surge going on Friday night when the teams continue their four-game weekend series in San Diego.
Given the starting job after Patrick Bailey was dealt to the Cleveland Guardians in May, Susac went 11-for-23 in his first 11 games but then slumped and suffered a back injury that forced him to the injured list.
He entered Wednesday’s game with the Milwaukee Brewers mired in a 4-for-36 skid. Then came the first two homers of his career, making him the first San Francisco player to belt his first two homers in the same game since pitcher Jim Gott did it on May 12, 1985. Gott hit only four career homers in 11 seasons.
“I knew it was going to come eventually,” Susac said of his long-ball stroke. “It was just putting in the work in the cage. I’m just trying to get back to the swing that I feel I came into this year with.”
Giants manager Tony Vitello said he wants to see Susac swing the bat with the kind of conviction he displayed in college and during his journey through the minors.
“When you’re kind of trying to stake your claim and keep your locker in there, sometimes guys alter who they are,” Vitello said. “I think he just needs to stay true to who he is.”
While Susac and the Giants aim for a third straight win, San Diego tries to start another winning streak. The Padres came into the series opener on Thursday with five consecutive victories before their offense was held to six hits by Robbie Ray and three relievers. They scored 27 total runs in the winning streak.
Left-hander Carson Whisenhunt (2-1, 4.60 ERA) will try to match Ray’s solid performance on Friday night. He last pitched on Sunday, absorbing a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels after permitting five hits and four runs over five innings with two walks and seven strikeouts. This will be his first career start against the Padres.
Bradgley Rodriguez (2-2, 2.33) is listed as the starter for the Giants, but he will serve as an opener. He has three starts among his 44 appearances.
Fellow right-hander German Marquez (4-2, 5.17) most likely will enter as a bulk-innings reliever out of the bullpen. Marquez’s last outing was July 24, when he lasted 2 1/3 innings in a short start during his team’s 4-2 win in Miami against the Marlins. He’s 5-13 with a 7.20 ERA in 22 career appearances (21 starts) against San Francisco.
One of those losses came March 31, when Marquez allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk in three innings against the Giants.
The Padres were at least able to save a good chunk of their bullpen for the weekend’s remainder after Randy Vasquez fired 4 2/3 scoreless innings of long relief in the series opener.
“He saved the rest of the pen for some success tomorrow, hopefully,” San Diego manager Craig Stammen said. “We were able to lose in a good manner. I hope he feels good that he might have set us up for the next few days.”
The outcome dropped San Diego two games behind the idle Arizona Diamondbacks and Philadelphia Phillies for the final wild-card spot in the National League.
