July is one of the quiet months on the sporting calendar, right? Not this year.

With the NBA and NHL season having come to a close, baseball takes center stage before the NFL comes roaring back in the next few months.

With the World Cup finishing up and a star-studded NBA free agency class, July supplied many unexpected and jaw-dropping moments. It’s hard to debate the top spot but the rest of the list was highly contested as we ranked the top 10 best sports moments in July.

Cody Bellinger, American League take All-Star game

It wasn’t much of a back-and-forth game as the American League jumped ahead early and never let the National league gain footing with a 4-0 win. Cody Bellinger’s first inning two-run single earned him MVP honors in just the second All-Star game shutout this century.

Jannik Sinner returns to glory and wins Wimbledon

After being bounced in the second round at the French Open last month, Jannik Sinner claimed his first Grand Slam since last year’s Wimbledon. He won his fifth major in dominant fashion, dropping just one set after the first round and taking down reigning French Open champion Alexander Zverev 7-6 (7), 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-4.

The WNBA continues to grow substantially and this year’s All-Star game was a direct indicator. More fans showed up to watch the WNBA’s All-Star game (19,783) than did the NBA All-Star game (15,973). On the broadcast side, it averaged 3.2 million viewers which was not only a 44% increase from last season, but was also the fifth-most watched game in league history.

Giannis Antetokounmpo gets his wish, finally gets traded

In a saga that has spanned across multiple offseasons, Giannis Antetokounmpo has at last been traded away from the Milwaukee Bucks in a move that drastically changes the landscape of the Eastern conference. The Miami Heat are the winners of the sweepstakes for the Greek Freak and their title odds surged from 30-1 all the way to 18-1

On June 24th, the Boston Red Sox sat dead last in the AL East with a 32-46 record. For the next month the Red Sox proceeded to not lose a single game, rattling off 15 straight wins while averaging nearly six runs per game. The historic franchise tied its longest win streak ever last set in 1946, and have been propelled into a playoff push.

The U.S. Men’s National Team takes down Bosnia

As one of the host nations of the World Cup, the U.S. had many lofty expectations for the tournament. While their dreams were ultimately cut short, the USMNT showed up in the round of 32 against Bosnia and Herzegovina with a convincing 2-0 win. For just a moment after Malik Tillman’s free kick clinching goal, it seemed the U.S. could go all the way.

It was a wild ride at the Open Championship and Ryan Fox made that clear with his clutch back nine. Fox used four birdies in his final six holes, including a clinching birdie putt on the par-4 18th hole to secure the title. It was the 39-year-old’s first ever major and becoming just the second golfer from New Zealand to win the Claret Jug since Bob Charles in 1963.

Argentina mounts great escape against England

It was a tournament filled with late goals at the 2026 World Cup, and Argentina was the main culprit. Trailing 1-0 in the depths of the match, Argentina and Lionel Messi somehow pulled it out with an outside-the-box goal from Enzo Fernández in the 85th minute and a header by Lautaro Martínez in the 92nd minute. Messi got both assists to keep Argentina’s dream run alive for the time being.

In potentially his last run at a championship, LeBron James made the monumental decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers to team up with a core that already featured Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. Superstar Jaylen Brown was also acquired in the offseason to bolster Philadelphia’s chance at a championship and get James a fifth ring.

Ferran Torres nets Spain World Cup supremacy

After an enthralling tournament, just Spain and defending champions Argentina were left to play it out for the World Cup Final. After being deadlocked for an hour and 45 minutes, Ferran Torres blasted home a winner off of a beautiful Nico Williams centering header. It was all Spain nee

Twins ride 'ultimate slam' into opener of road trip vs. Mariners

If Kody Clemens is looking for endorsements, he might try Denny’s. After all, an ultimate grand slam sounds like something you might order at one of their restaurants.

Clemens hit the 34th known “ultimate slam” in major league history Thursday — a walk-off homer with the bases loaded while trailing by three runs — to give the Minnesota Twins an improbable 4-3 victory against the visiting Kansas City Royals.

The Twins (55-55) reached .500 and pulled within a game of the American League’s third and final wild-card berth as they begin a nine-game trip Friday against the Seattle Mariners.

“That’s stuff that you dream about, stuff like that, when you’re a little kid,” Clemens said. “That’s what you envision doing.”

The Twins had just one hit through 8 2/3 innings, a single by Ryan Jeffers leading off the seventh against Royals starter Noah Cameron.

Jeffers sparked the ninth-inning rally when he was hit by a pitch from Lucas Erceg. Royce Lewis blooped a single to center and Josh Bell walked.

“Sometimes it starts with something very simple as a hit by pitch,” said Twins manager Derek Shelton, who celebrated his 56th birthday, “and then all of a sudden it’s like, ‘OK, there’s a little bit of life.'”

The Royals brought in left-hander Matt Strahm to face Clemens, who fell behind 0-2 in the count before hitting a blast to right-center field.

“The belief in every player in the lineup for me is so immense, and it’s for real, man. And it shows why,” Lewis said. “I just knew that we were going to get the job done. Until they say the game is over and you lost, I have belief that we’re going to win every game. It’s so much fun to be a part of.”

The Twins got another boost when, after landing in Seattle, they learned they’d reportedly acquired left-handed reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets.

While the Twins were going 4-2 at home against the Athletics and Royals, the Mariners finished a 2-5 trip to Texas and Los Angeles on Thursday night with a 6-2 loss to the defending World Series champion Dodgers.

The Mariners dropped 2 1/2 games back of the Rangers in the AL West and are three back in the wild-card standings.

“We know what we’ve got to do here, and we’ve just got to get it done,” said Seattle manager Dan Wilson, whose team won the division title last season and reached Game 7 of the AL Championship Series.

Friday’s series opener is scheduled to feature a pair of right-handers in the Twins’ Zebby Matthews (4-8, 5.21 ERA) and the Mariners’ Bryce Miller (4-5, 2.75).

Matthews has lost his past three outings, though he had a quality start last Friday against the Athletics when he allowed two runs on three hits over six innings of a 2-0 defeat. He’s 0-0 with a 5.14 ERA in one previous start against Seattle.

Miller, who debuted in 2026 on May 13, has also lost three starts in a row. He gave up a season-high five earned runs last Friday in a 5-4 loss at Texas. He’s 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three career starts versus Minnesota.

After brief rest, Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani to return vs. Red Sox

After Shohei Ohtani received an unexpected day off, the Los Angeles Dodgers are expected to have their star back at the top of the order to open a three-game series against the visiting Boston Red Sox on Friday.

Ohtani has been dealing with a sore left knee and some right biceps tightness of late, which has forced him out of the rotation since the return from the All-Star break, but not from the designated hitter spot until Thursday.

After a recent run of five hits in seven at-bats, including three extra-base hits, Ohtani went in for treatment on his knee late Wednesday and was given some downtime.

“The last couple days he’s been on base a lot more, so I think that’s been a good thing in one sense whereas the last part of the (recent) road trip he wasn’t,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “So there might have been a little something to that.”

Ohtani received an injection in the knee during the All-Star break and had been making progress with the injury, according to Roberts.

With Tommy Edman in the leadoff spot Thursday, and Teoscar Hernandez serving as the designated hitter, the Dodgers earned a 6-2 victory over the Mariners to take two of the three games in the series. Hernandez hit his first home run since July 3, while Dalton Rushing added a three-run shot.

With Ohtani out of the mix in a six-man rotation, Roberts has resorted to bullpen games on occasion, with another one set for Friday. Right-hander Edgardo Henriquez (4-1, 2.79 ERA) is set to pitch the opening inning.

The Red Sox have a trio of left-handers lined up to face the Dodgers over the weekend, with Ranger Suarez (4-3, 3.02) set to take the ball in the series opener.

Suarez returned from the injured list Sunday, after recovering from a left groin strain and an illness, then delivered four scoreless innings in an eventual victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

“The first couple innings, I was kind of nervous, because I didn’t know how I was going to feel,” Suarez said. “After that, I felt pretty good.”

Suarez gave up four hits with six strikeouts and threw 64 pitches.

“(For) three weeks I never stopped throwing,” Suarez said. “I wasn’t surprised I had my command.”

In eight career appearances (five starts) against the Dodgers, Suarez is 3-2 with 3.64 ERA.

Boston arrived at Los Angeles after rallying for a 5-4 road victory over the Athletics on Thursday with back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning from Wilyer Abreu and Willson Contreras.

The Red Sox improved to 20-3 since July 3 and 25-5 since June 25 when they entered the day with a 32-46 record.

In the midst of his own rough season, Boston’s Jarren Duran appeared to question why Contreras did not tag up from third base on his fly ball in the sixth inning. He gestured back toward the infield as he returned to the dugout. After the game, Duran downplayed the incident.

“That’s nothing. It’s something that, within the team, that we have, that we work on, and it’s nothing,” Duran told reporters. “Like, you guys don’t need to know. Nobody needs to know. That’s something between us and the team that we know (what) it’s about. That doesn’t really matter.”

Mets deal reliever A.J. Minter to Twins

The New York Mets have begun their expected sell-off of veterans before the trade deadline, with the first deal bringing a familiar last name back to Queens.

The last-place Mets traded left-handed reliever A.J. Minter to the Minnesota Twins on Friday in exchange for minor league infielders Bruin Agbayani and Billy Amick.

Agbayani, 19, is the son of former Mets outfielder Benny Agbayani, a fan favorite in his playing days.

Minter, 32, is set to become a free agent after the season. He is 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA and 20 strikeouts and just two walks across 23 innings in 23 appearances this season, his second in New York after eight seasons with Atlanta. He is 25-30 with 36 saves and a 3.18 ERA and 456 strikeouts over 382 2/3 innings in 420 games in his career.

Minter suffered a lat muscle tear last season that delayed his 2026 debut to late May, which could help explain his dip in velocity.

Agbayani was the Twins’ sixth-round draft pick last year out of Saint Louis School in Honolulu. He played 10 games for Class-A Fort Myers this season, batting .268 with no homers and six RBIs, before being sidelined since mid-May due to a right shoulder ailment.

Amick, 23, was Minnesota’s second-round draft choice in 2024 out of the University of Tennessee. He hit .217 with 23 homers and 72 RBIs in 86 games for Double-A Wichita this season.

The Twins enter Friday three games behind the Chicago White Sox for the American League Central lead and one game back of fellow Central foe Cleveland for the final AL wild-card spot.

The Mets, in the cellar in the National League East, hold the second-worst record (47-63) in the NL behind only the Colorado Rockies (42-67).

Among the players they are expected to try to move are relievers Luke Weaver and Brooks Raley as well as starters Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes.

The trade deadline is 6 p.m. ET on Monday.
