Surging White Sox return to comfort of home to face Astros

A timely attack and solid bullpen have helped the American League Central-leading Chicago White Sox match their season high at seven games over .500.

Chicago’s bid to keep climbing continues Friday with a visit from the Houston Astros for a three-game series, but the White Sox prefer to take things one game at a time.

“A lot of it is going day to day and not thinking too much about what’s going on the day before,” reliever Bryan Hudson said. “Focus on what’s in front of us and how we can win that day. Just keep going that way. It’s a good feeling.”

The White Sox have won three straight series as they return to Rate Field for the first time since sweeping the Athletics in the final three games before the All-Star break. The White Sox are 31-17 at home.

Chicago was idle Thursday after defeating the host Texas Rangers 4-2 on Wednesday. Chase Meidroth went 4-for-4 with two RBIs, Andrew Benintendi had two hits and two RBIs, and the pitching staff limited Texas to five hits.

Houston enters the opener of a six-game road trip coming off a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins.

Yordan Alvarez drilled a go-ahead, two-run home run in the eighth inning before Isaac Paredes followed with a solo shot to key a 5-2 victory on Wednesday.

Although Alvarez carries the American League’s top marks in batting average (.328), home runs (34) and RBIs (77), the Astros designated hitter prefers to avoid discussing what maintaining that pace would entail.

“I’m just focused right now on playing ball,” Alvarez said. “There’s more than two months remaining in the season, so I’m not going to talk anymore about the Triple Crown. I don’t want to answer any more questions about the Triple Crown.”

The Astros would rather address their pursuit of an AL playoff spot. Despite being four games under .500, they stand two games out of the AL West lead and also are part of a jumbled wild-card race.

“The expectation is to win,” said shortstop Jeremy Pena, who has homered in three consecutive games. “How do we get there? Everyone is showing up every single day. Everyone is trying to figure that out.”

Houston’s Spencer Arrighetti is set to oppose Davis Martin of Chicago in a matchup of right-handers.

Arrighetti (7-5, 4.34 ERA) will aim to win for the first time since he faced the Texas Rangers on May 28, a span of eight starts. After pitching to a 9.00 ERA in June, Arrighetti has allowed just one run in two of his three outings this month.

He took a no-decision against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, spacing one run, one hit, four walks and six strikeouts in five innings. Arrighetti is 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two career starts against the White Sox, covering 10 innings.

Martin (9-5, 3.31) has similar numbers versus the Astros — 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts over 11 innings.

Although he is coming off Saturday’s 1-0 loss at Toronto, when he worked 5 2/3 innings of one-run, four-hit ball, Martin said he felt “back in sync” mechanically after recent struggles.

“It’s a good tone-setter for the second half,” he said. “I think there’s some things we can get better on, but for the most part, just really happy with how we could make adjustments on the fly. I kind of felt more like myself, compared to the prior month.”

Second-seeded Barbora Krejcikova scored an easy straight set victory over Lucie Havlickova 6-4, 6-2 to cruise to the quarterfinals at the Prague Open in the Czech Republic on Thursday.

Krejcikova won the tournament in 2021 but has yet to return to the semifinals. On Thursday, she was able to put the pressure on Havlickova, forcing 12 break point opportunities and taking three while saving the lone break point she faced.

In the other matches, Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand outlasted fourth-seeded Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic in a marathon match, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-6 (6). Tararudee landed just 67 percent of her first service points and Bartunkova just 69 percent. Tararudee fell behind in the final set 5-2 but staved off four match points throughout the set to advance to the next round.

Third-seeded Sara Bejlek cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maria Timofeeva of Uzbekistan. Bejlek will now face off against Austria’s Lilli Tagger in the next round after Tagger took down Japan’s Mai Hontama 6-4, 6-4.

MSC Hamburg Ladies Open

Top-seeded Oleksandra Oliynykova of Ukraine had to fight through a three-set match to advance and was the only seeded player to do so on the day in Germany.

Oliynykova came out on top 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-2 over Spaniard Leyre Romero Gormaz despite saving only 4 of the 11 break points she faced. It was her return game that came in handy as she broke Romero Gormaz seven times and had a 75 percent first serve percentage in the deciding set.

Oliynykova will now have to prepare for Elina Avanesyan of Armenia who upset seventh-seeded Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. Avanesyan is currently ranked 208 in the world but picked apart Putintseva by breaking her nine times across the three sets.

Egypt’s Mayar Sherif took down France’s Elsa Jacquemot 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the quarterfinals. She’ll take on Paula Badosa of Spain after Badosa defeated third-seeded Panna Udvardy of Hungary, 6-4, 6-1.

Lane Kiffin regrets making mess of Ole Miss exit

Lane Kiffin accepted his third SEC head-coaching job in 17 years when he agreed to leave Ole Miss for LSU at the end of the regular season in November.

Eight months later, Kiffin admitted he would have done things differently if granted a redo. Kiffin said he would have hit the exit when Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter told him he couldn’t stick around to coach the team when he already had agreed to leave for LSU.

“I wish I would have gone in when I met with Keith and said, ‘I’ve made the decision to go,'” Kiffin said. “I wish I would have just said, ‘Hey, I’d like to coach the team,’ and he’d say, ‘No.’ And I’d say, ‘Hey, OK, I appreciate it.’ Move on [and] never even discussed it again.”

Ole Miss was 11-1 in the regular season and booked a spot in the College Football Playoff as Kiffin weighed offers from two other SEC programs — LSU and Florida. He met with Carter following the Rebels’ rivalry game with Mississippi State before his decision became public along with Kiffin’s claim he was fighting to coach Ole Miss in the CFP.

Kiffin won’t have to wait all that long to see several of his former players and coaches. LSU visits Ole Miss on Sept. 19 for a matchup of Kiffin and his former top assistant, Pete Golding. The Rebels’ defensive coordinator was promoted to head coach upon Kiffin’s departure for Baton Rouge.

Congress included language in its proposed college sports regulatory legislation for a “Lane Kiffin Rule” within the Protect College Sports Act.

On Thursday, Kiffin said he didn’t know about it because “I don’t read anything” and has given up social media.

“Like, you just said that, and I didn’t know that until you said it,” Kiffin claimed. “You know, I guess in that I hope that some way for future coaches they’re not put in that situation. You know, the NFL, you’re never put in that situation because of the calendar and because of the rules of movement within seasons.

“I do hope for future people that’s fixed so that you’re not in that same predicament for players, for coaches, which really was a player issue, too. Then we fixed that with moving the portal date back. That was more of an issue earlier in the postseason, too, as you saw players having to leave teams to get into the portal during the season. Hopefully some way they fix it for coaches, too.”

Kiffin, who served as Alabama offensive coordinator and was head coach at Tennessee, feels he ultimately made the right call to replace Brian Kelly at LSU. His mistake? Expecting everyone to appreciate or understand it.

“I made a challenging decision in change,” Kiffin said. “I think as I look back to that, I thought I could find a way for everybody to understand. Now as I look back later on, that was never going to happen.”

Lauren Coughlin, Jenny Shin seize Scottish Open first-round lead

Lauren Coughlin, left, Rio Takeda and Hannah Green share a laugh while walking the 20th fairway during the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills in the Town of Erin, May 29, 2025.Lauren Coughlin, left, Rio Takeda and Hannah Green share a laugh while walking the 20th fairway during the first round of the U.S. Women’s Open at Erin Hills in the Town of Erin, May 29, 2025.

Lauren Coughlin and South Korea’s Jenny Shin fired 6-under-par 66s on Thursday to share the Scottish Open first-round lead at Dundonald Links in Ayrshire, Scotland.

Coughlin, who won the Scottish Open in 2024, compiled eight birdies and two bogeys on a links course that didn’t play like normal due to Europe’s recent heat wave.

“It was pretty difficult out there,” Coughlin said. “I’ve not ever really played it when it’s been this firm, especially off the tee, so quite a few different things off the tee than normal where I used to be able to hit the driver a lot of places.”

Shin, who started on the back nine like Coughlin, posted seven birdies on the day – including birdies at her first three par-5s.

“It’s playing a little shorter than the years past when it was quite wet out here,” Shin said. “And the fact I was able to reach the par-5s and take advantage of making the birdies there, and having a few 58-degree (wedges) coming into the green helped. I was able to get my ball within 15 feet and when I did have the chance for birdie, I did make it. So it was a good day.”

Korea’s A Lim Kim sits one shot behind at 67 while Sweden’s Lisa Pettersson (69) posted the day’s only other sub-70 score in the 144-golfer field.

World No. 1 Nelly Korda posted a 72 to share 14th place after one round. Playing in the same group as Korda, defending champion Lottie Woad of England got off to a poor start with a double bogey on No. 3 and a bogey on No. 4 before settling down for a 74.

“There were a few interesting pin placements on the front nine with the wind,” Woad said, “and tough to get it close really and didn’t make enough putts to really be under par. But for me, 2-over is not disastrous. Still going to be in it. A day of not trying to play yourself out of it, really.”
