Rays' Junior Caminero first to commit to Home Run Derby
Jun 28, 2026; St. Petersburg, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Junior Caminero (13) hits a home run against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fifth inning at Tropicana Field. Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Following a week during which he hit seven home runs in six games, it seemed only fitting for Rays slugger Junior Caminero to announce Tuesday he will participate in the Home Run Derby during All-Star Week in Philadelphia.
Caminero became the first player to confirm his Derby spot, and it came on the heels of his record-breaking performance at the plate for Tampa Bay. After sparking his hot streak with the first three-homer game of his career on June 23, the 22-year-old wrapped the week Sunday by going deep in his fourth consecutive game.
He became the youngest Ray to homer in four straight games when he crushed a career-best 463-foot blast on Sunday.
“That was the type of ball that made everyone go quiet,” Tampa Bay center fielder Cedric Mullins said. “Instead of cheering, we’re all just looking at each other. … Special kind of power out of him.”
Caminero’s seven home runs in six games tied him with Bryce Harper (2015), Willie Horton (1965) and Boog Powell (1964) for the most by a hitter age 22 or younger since at least 1900.
In the Rays’ game Tuesday night at Kansas City, Caminero can extend his streak to five games. He enters the night with 22 homers and a .292/.384/.548 slash line in 81 games this season.
He is, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash said, a “special player doing special things.”
Now, Caminero has a chance to avenge his runner-up finish in last year’s Home Run Derby, when champion Cal Raleigh outhit him 18-13 in the final round. Should Caminero claim this year’s trophy, he would become the youngest player to win the competition.
The competition begins at 8 p.m. ET on July 13 at Citizens Bank Park.

Tigers pounce on skidding Yankees to begin series with win
Jun 29, 2026; Bronx, New York, USA; Detroit Tigers second baseman Hao-Yu Lee (50) follows through on a two run single against the New York Yankees during the second inning at Yankee Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Casey Mize tossed seven outstanding innings in his longest start of the season and the visiting Detroit Tigers scored seven runs in the first four innings during a 7-3 victory over the slumping New York Yankees on Monday night.
Mize (3-5) allowed a double to rookie Spencer Jones that started the third and nothing else. The right-hander constantly got ahead of hitters and tied a career high with 10 strikeouts. It was Mize’s third career double-digit strikeout game, and he finished his outing by fanning five of the final six hitters.
Mize threw 58 of 88 pitches for strikes after getting tagged for four runs by the Yankees on Tuesday in Detroit.
Rookies Hao-Yu Lee and Kevin McGonigle drove in two runs apiece for the Tigers, who bounced back after a pair of late-inning home losses to the Houston Astros. Matt Vierling, Dillon Dingler and Spencer Torkelson also drove in runs as the Tigers scored five unearned runs due to errors by New York third baseman Jose Caballero and left fielder Cody Bellinger.
Torkelson hit an RBI single in the first off Ryan Weathers (3-6) after Dingler doubled and advanced on a passed ball by catcher Austin Wells.
Zach McKinstry started the second with a single and scored when Caballero made a throwing error on a grounder by Vierling.
Dingler followed Caballero’s errant throw with a sacrifice fly, and the Tigers loaded the bases for Lee, who extended the lead to 5-0 with a single to left.
Vierling started the fourth with a single and Dingler reached when Bellinger misplayed his fly ball in the corner. McGonigle followed by lacing a 1-2 changeup from reliever Yerry De Los Santos into left field for a seven-run lead.
Weathers allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits in a season-low 1 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out three and walked one.
The Yankees tied a season worst by losing their fifth straight game.
New York also lost Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fourth inning when the second baseman collided with right fielder Jasson Dominguez on a fly ball by Lee. The Yankees said Chisholm was in the concussion protocol.
Drew Sommers allowed a three-run homer to pinch hitter Amed Rosario in the eighth before getting two strikeouts. Drew Anderson pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to finish up for the Tigers.

Pirates bats stay hot, take down Phillies in series opener
Jun 29, 2026; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Braxton Ashcraft (35) throws a pitch during the first inning against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Mandatory Credit: Eric Hartline-Imagn Images Rookie Esmerlyn Valdez homered for the fourth straight game and Endy Rodriguez hit a late three-run shot as the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates topped the Philadelphia Phillies 11-7 in Monday’s opener of a four-game set.
Playing in just his 16th MLB game, Valdez continued his hot stretch in support of Braxton Ashcraft (8-3), who settled down after a rough start to allow five runs and five hits in six innings. Jared Triolo also homered as Pittsburgh rallied from a 5-0 deficit in the opener of a seven-game road trip.
Brandon Marsh hit two home runs for the Phillies, while Bryce Harper and Trea Turner also went deep. Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola (3-5) gave up eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings while allowing two home runs for the fourth straight outing.
The Phillies jumped out to a 2-0 lead on first-inning homers by Turner and Marsh. Harper’s two-run blast highlighted a three-run third as the hosts extended their lead to 5-0.
Nola had no major issues in the first three innings, but his good fortune didn’t last. The veteran right-hander allowed a two-run homer to Valdez in the fourth inning — the rookie’s sixth of the season — before things completely unraveled in the fifth.
Triolo opened that frame with a home run and the next two batters reached against Nola before Brandon Lowe’s sacrifice fly pulled the visitors within 5-4. Shortly thereafter, Ryan O’Hearn’s single tied the game.
Nola exited with one out and the bases loaded before Seth Johnson came on and allowed three more runs, including two that scored on an errant throw by Turner.
Ashcraft allowed only a two-out walk in the fifth and then pitched a 1-2-3 sixth, ending his night after 97 pitches.
Pirates reliever Evan Sisk survived the seventh despite putting two runners in scoring position.
Gregory Soto yielded two runs in the eighth, including Marsh’s second homer of the game, before Yohan Ramirez struck out Justin Crawford with the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
Rodriguez’s blast off Chase Shugart with two outs in the ninth gave Pittsburgh some breathing room before Mason Montgomery slammed the door in the final frame.

Cameron Cauley sparks Rangers' 5th straight win in MLB debut
Jun 29, 2026; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Cleveland Guardians second baseman Travis Bazzana (37) throws to first base in the first inning against the Texas Rangers at Progressive Field. Mandatory Credit: David Richard-Imagn Images Cameron Cauley tripled in the seventh inning for his first major league hit in his debut, then scored the go-ahead run on Nicky Lopez’s single as the visiting Texas Rangers beat the Cleveland Guardians 6-3 on Monday night.
Lopez subsequently came home on Justin Foscue’s double as American League West Division-leading Texas scored twice in the seventh to take a 4-2 lead. The Rangers had tied the game in the sixth on Jake Burger’s RBI single.
Robby Ahlstrom (3-0) picked up the win with one scoreless inning of relief and Jacob Latz tossed two clean frames for his 17th save in 19 opportunities. Texas matched its longest winning streak of the year at five.
Cleveland rookie Parker Messick (7-5) lost for the fourth time in five starts, allowing four runs on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. The left-hander struck out five without a walk, raising his ERA to a season-high 2.85.
Second baseman Cauley went 1-for-3 with an error after being recalled from Triple-A Round Rock. He scored his second run in the ninth, when the Rangers upped their lead to 6-3 on Foscue’s double that also plated Evan Carter, thanks to a Steven Kwan error.
The Guardians narrowed the score to 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh when Jakob Junis’ wild pitch allowed Brayan Rocchio to score. Junis sustained an undisclosed injury while warming up in the eighth, which forced closer Latz to take over.
Cleveland dropped to 2-2 during its 10-game homestand, falling one game behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.
The Guardians took a 2-1 lead in the fifth with a pair of runs, starting with Gabriel Arias’ leadoff homer, a 429-foot drive to left-center off Chris Paddack. Austin Hedges followed with a single, and scored on Chase DeLauter’s double inside the first base line.
Texas opened the scoring in the fourth when Josh Jung led off with a double and came home on Burger’s groundout. A sharp single by Burger in the sixth plated Carter.
Tyler Alexander served as the opener for Texas, giving up one hit in one inning with two strikeouts, and was followed by Paddack. The 31-year-old became the first big league pitcher to record saves in back-to-back contests, then start the next game.
Paddack, who went 0-7 with a 6.69 ERA in 13 appearances for the Miami Marlins and Cincinnati Reds this year, was signed earlier in the day. The right-hander worked four innings, allowing two runs on seven hits.
