Rapids, St. Louis City eager to break out of winless ruts
May 2, 2026; Houston, Texas, USA; Colorado Rapids midfielder Paxten Aaronson (10) attempts to control the ball during the second half against the Houston Dynamo at Shell Energy Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images When a team is in the middle of the MLS pack as the Colorado Rapids are, the ability to win on the margins is a necessity.
After failing to do that on May 2 in a 1-0 loss at Houston, Colorado will aim to produce a three-point result Saturday night when it hosts struggling St. Louis City in Commerce City, Colo.
Rapids coach Matt Wells wants to see his team find a flow sooner instead of later in matches.
“We need to be able to put some points on the board where we don’t quite hit our stride,” he said. “At the moment, if we don’t quite hit our stride and our rhythm, we’re always on the losing end of these tight games with small margins.”
The Rapids (4-6-1, 13 points) own a losing record despite outscoring opponents 22-19. They are tied for third in the league in scoring but are tied for 19th in goals against. Rafael Navarro has posted seven goals, while Darren Yapi and Paxten Aaronson have three apiece.
Yapi, a Denver-area product, signed a contract on Tuesday that binds him to the club through the 2028-29 season, with an option for 2029-30.
While Colorado tries to find its best form, St. Louis (1-6-3, 6 points) continues to struggle, as it has since a magical expansion year in 2023. St. Louis City are coming off a 2-0 loss Sunday in Austin, dropping the visitors to 0-3-2 in their past five matches.
The team has been outscored 11-5 in that span, extending its trend of failing to hit the back of the net this year. St. Louis’ nine goals in 10 fixtures are tied for the second-fewest in the league, and the team’s once-stingy defense has fallen to the middle of the pack with 18 goals conceded.
However, players such as Eduard Lowen maintain confidence in the system of first-year coach Yoann Damet.
“I’m more confident than ever before,” Lowen said. “The results haven’t been there and we’re not where we want to be right now. If the results come, we’ll have a great future ahead of us.”

Luke Raley's career night powers Mariners past White Sox
May 8, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Seattle Mariners right fielder Luke Raley (20) rounds the bases after hitting a three-run home run against the Chicago White Sox during the seventh inning at Rate Field. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Luke Raley hit a grand slam and three-run homer and Julio Rodriguez and Josh Naylor also went deep to power the visiting Seattle Mariners to a 12-8 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Friday.
Raley collected a career-high seven RBIs while Naylor was 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Randy Arozarena added three hits and Rodriguez had two.
Mariners right-hander Emerson Hancock withstood early trouble to pick up the victory and send the White Sox to their fourth loss in five games.
Chicago took a 1-0 lead in the first as Munetaka Murakami smacked a solo home run to the opposite field in left.
Murakami set a major league record by homering in his eighth successive series opener. He also matched New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge for the major league home run lead with 15.
Seattle answered in the second by capitalizing on Chicago starting pitcher Sean Burke’s wildness. Burke had a walk, wild pitch and two hit-by-pitches. Cole Young absorbed the second HBP, which forced in a run and forged a 1-1 tie.
Both teams rallied for four runs in the third, with the Mariners doing all their damage with two outs. Two singles and a walk brought Raley to the plate. He drilled an 0-2 fastball from Burke over the right-field wall for his first career grand slam.
Chicago chipped away with Sam Antonacci’s run-scoring single in the bottom half before Hancock walked a pair to load the bases. Colson Montgomery followed with a three-run double to left center on the first pitch.
Rodriguez led off the fifth with a solo shot to put the Mariners ahead 6-5. Raley (seventh inning) and Naylor (eighth) put the game away with three-run blasts against the Chicago bullpen.
Raley became the first Mariner with a grand slam and three-run shot in the same game since Nelson Cruz on July 23, 2016.
Hancock (3-1) spaced five runs and five hits over six innings with three walks and four strikeouts.
Burke, who entered with a streak of 14 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings, fell to 2-3 after allowing six runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out four.
Antonacci had two hits for the White Sox. Jarred Kelenic and Tristan Peters drove in runs in the eighth. Randal Grichuk closed the scoring with a pinch-hit solo homer off the left field foul pole in the ninth.

Rockies blow 6-run lead before beating Phillies in 11
May 8, 2026; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Chase Dollander (32) throws a pitch against the Philadelphia Phillies in the first inning at Citizens Bank Park. Mandatory Credit: Kyle Ross-Imagn Images Troy Johnston’s pinch-hit RBI double in the 11th inning led the visiting Colorado Rockies to a series-opening 9-7 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.
Johnston brought home automatic runner Willi Castro with his go-ahead knock off Brad Keller (1-1) and later scored on a Jake McCarthy RBI single. In the bottom of the inning, Juan Mejia got Bryce Harper to ground out with two on to end the game, securing his second save.
Victor Vodnik (1-2) worked two shutout innings in the ninth and 10th for the Rockies, who won despite blowing an early 6-0 lead.
Trailing 7-2 in the eighth, the Phillies tagged the Colorado bullpen for five runs to tie the game. After Brandon Marsh’s RBI single and Bryson Stott’s two-run double, Justin Crawford made his first career home run count, knotting the score with a two-run shot to right-center off Jimmy Herget.
A five-run fourth had put the Rockies in control. The damage was all done with no outs, as Phillies starter Jesus Luzardo was pulled after letting the first seven hitters of the inning reach base.
TJ Rumfield started it off with a single, scoring one at-bat later when Hunter Goodman launched his 10th homer. Brenton Doyle and Willi Castro scored on Kyle Karros’ two-run double and Ezequiel Tovar added an RBI single to cap the explosive inning.
An RBI groundout by Rumfield opened the scoring in the first. It was an inauspicious start for Luzardo, who walked Jordan Beck to open the game and later let him advance to third on a wild pitch.
Luzardo — who had allowed three total runs in his last three starts — allowed six runs on six hits over three innings, striking out six and walking three.
Philadelphia’s hitters struggled to unlock Chase Dollander, who didn’t allow a hit through the first three innings.
They eventually broke through when Schwarber led off the sixth with his 200th homer with the Phillies. J.T. Realmuto’s RBI double with two outs in the inning chased Dollander, who allowed two runs on three hits in 5 2/3 innings, striking out and walking five apiece.
Tyler Freeman’s solo shot in the seventh off Tim Mayza was the only blemish for the Phillies’ bullpen until the final frame, as they otherwise worked seven consecutive scoreless innings after Luzardo’s early exit.

Expansion franchise Fire host revamped Sky for first game
May 3, 2026; Portland, OR, USA; Portland Fire center Luisa Geiselsoder (15) talks to her teammates during a break in the action against the Los Angeles Sparks in the second half at Moda Center. Mandatory Credit: Jaime Valdez-Imagn Images The Chicago Sky tied for the league low of 10 victories last season and have since revamped the roster as they prepare to open the 2026 season at the expansion Portland Fire on Saturday night.
The most important newcomer is seven-time All-Star Skylar Diggins, and one of the players shipped out was stellar rebounder Angel Reese.
Chicago added Rickea Jackson and Azura Stevens to the frontcourt, while it loaded up in the backcourt by bringing in Natasha Cloud, DiJonai Carrington and Jacy Sheldon and drafting Gabriela Jaquez out of UCLA in the first round in addition to Diggins.
Sky coach Tyler Marsh doesn’t mind having a guard-heavy squad.
“I don’t think you can go wrong with a lot of good guards, capable guards,” Marsh told reporters earlier this week. “It’s not like we’re just stock holding a bunch of players. It’s players that can contribute and we’re going to find ways to utilize them.”
Diggins, 35, averaged 15.5 points and 6.0 assists for the Seattle Storm last season. Her wealth of experience will patch a leadership void early in the season as star point guard Courtney Vandersloot continues to rehab her knee injury. The five-time All-Star tore her ACL last June.
Carrington (foot) and Stevens (knee) will also be sidelined as Chicago opens a four-game road trip. The Sky won’t play at home until May 20 against the Dallas Wings.
Portland is beginning its expansion season with four straight home games — including a two-game set against the New York Liberty and one versus the Connecticut Sun.
Fire coach Alex Sarama is focused on building a foundation around defense.
“I feel in a pretty good place with where our defense is at,” the 30-year-old Sarama told reporters earlier this week. “The offense is gonna take a little longer. Just a new system, players doing a good job getting used to it.”
Portland took forward Bridget Carleton (Minnesota) with the first pick of the expansion draft and also nabbed guards Carla Leite (Golden State) and Sarah Ashlee Barker (Los Angeles) and guard/forward Haley Jones (Dallas), among others.
Barker is fully bought in on being part of the Fire’s building project.
“I think every single day you can tell that, one, we come in and we work really hard no matter what,” Barker said earlier this week.
“When people make mistakes, we pick each other up. There’s a lot of effort and energy, and you can’t teach effort and energy. But you can teach the mistakes, you can teach the Xs and Os, you can teach the defense.”
This is the second rendition for Portland in the WNBA. The original Fire played from 2000-02 before folding.
