Quakes, eager to shake off rare loss, clash with FC Dallas

Mandatory Credit: Stan Szeto-Imagn Images After a midweek stumble in what otherwise has been a brilliant revival season, the San Jose Earthquakes will look to get back on track when they play host to FC Dallas on Saturday.
The Earthquakes (9-2-2, 29 points) gave up a season high in goals during a 3-2 road loss to the Seattle Sounders on Wednesday. San Jose’s Preston Judd tied the match in the 69th minute before the Sounders broke through with the game-winner in the 89th minute.
Nick Fernandez also scored for San Jose, off an assist from Nonso Adimabua, when he delivered his first of the season in the second minute of the match. Judd scored his team-high ninth of the season after entering as a second-half substitute.
“It was a good goal, obviously coming in the first couple minutes of the game. … Nick played a good 90 minutes,” San Jose coach Bruce Arena said after the Earthquakes saw an eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end. “And Preston Judd continues to do his job as a center forward and scored another goal, so that’s a real positive.”
Judd has goals in five consecutive matches to tie a single-season franchise record. He has six total goals in the stretch.
Tied with the Vancouver Whitecaps for the most points in the Western Conference, San Jose sits in second on the second tiebreaker, goal differential.
FC Dallas (5-4-4, 19 points) enter off a 3-2 home loss to the Whitecaps on Wednesday. The two goals tied for the most Vancouver has allowed in a match this season.
Logan Farrington leveled the contest 2-2 in the 49th minute on a header before the Whitecaps delivered the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute. Petar Musa scored from the penalty spot in the 10th minute for FC Dallas.
“This was a missed opportunity,” said FC Dallas coach Eric Quill, who was sent off in the 87th minute for stepping on the field. “We all need to take accountability, myself included, and find ways to improve because we’re capable of being at the top of the standings.”
Musa has 11 goals on the season, tied with Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi for second in MLS, one behind leader Hugo Cuypers of the Chicago Fire. Musa’s 45 goals for the franchise are one away from tying Kenny Cooper for third on the club’s all-time list.

Kyle Busch runs away with record fifth Truck Series win at Dover
NASCAR Truck Series driver Kyle Busch races during the Rackley Roofing 200 at Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, Tenn., Friday, May 30, 2025. DOVER, Del. – Kyle Busch did what Kyle Busch does best in a truck at Dover Motor Speedway. Win.
Busch claimed his record fifth NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series trophy and 13th overall at the famous concrete one-miler, dominating Friday’s ECOSAVE 200 leading 147 of the 200 laps in the No. 7 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet and sweeping both stage victories en route to a 3.039-second victory over former series champ Ty Majeski of ThorSport Racing.
After a well-deserved, deep bow to the crowd at the finish line, a grateful Busch spoke of his fondness for the high-banked track where he will compete in the NASCAR Cup Series’ annual All-Star Race on Sunday. It marked his series-best 69th career win – and second in four starts this season.
“You never know when the last one is,” Busch said of savoring the victory. “I know all too well unfortunately with the Cup stuff, but here with the Truck stuff now, it’s awesome to be part of Spire Motorsports.
“I’m sure it looked great out front, leading the race,” he added with a grin. “It wasn’t just Kyle Larson doing it. Feels good to have another Kyle able to do it and put ourselves in Victory Lane. Love coming to Dover, always one of my favorite places to race.
“Definitely some managing of the fuel there, managing the tires there. It was an interesting strategic battle I guess from the driver’s seat. Thanks to the fans and all the people for being here.”
“All in all, takes a lot of great people behind you and with you,” he added of the Spire Motorsports team. “It’s fun and (I) want to keep doing it.”
The only other driver to truly challenge Busch in the series’ return to Dover after a six-year break was fellow NASCAR Cup Series regular Ross Chastain, who led 49 laps but had to pit late in the race for fuel after a spirited side-by-side battle with Busch midway through the event.
Majeski did his best to keep Busch honest in earning his runner-up finish – which equaled his previous top effort of the season. Front Row Motorsports’ Layne Riggs finished third. Last week’s winner, Tricon Garage’s Kaden Honeycutt, finished fourth in the No. 11 Toyota after an impressive rally from an early-race pit stop penalty. NASCAR Cup Series driver Christopher Bell rounded out the top five.
With his work Friday, Honeycutt now holds a 38-point advantage on Riggs atop the championship standings. Chandler Smith is third, 39 points back.
Brandon Jones, Christian Eckes, Corey LaJoie, Jake Garcia and Justin Haley rounded out the top 10. Former NASCAR Cup Series driver Clint Bowyer, who works fulltime in the FOX Sports NASCAR booth calling NASCAR Cup Series races made a spot start for Kaulig Racing’s RAM truck program, finishing 29th after a tire problem in the closing laps.
The race was also significant in having three women drivers in the field – equaling a high mark last set in 2020.
Although she spun out 37 laps into the race, Dystany Spurlock became the first black woman to ever start a NASCAR national series race. Although she spun and took a 36th-place finish, she was encouraged by her debut.
“Today is a great day,” Spurlock said. “We did make history which is phenomenal. Of course I wanted to finish the race, but this is racing and things like this happen. Just going to get ready for the next race.”
Toni Breidinger finished 25th and Natalie Decker was 34th.
The Truck Series returns to action next Friday with the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway (7:30 p.m. ET on FS1, NRN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). The 2025 series champion Corey Heim is the defending race winner.

Amanda Doherty, Jin Young Ko share midway lead at Queen City
Aug 21, 2025; Mississauga, Ontario, CAN; Jin Young Ko plays her tee shot during first round play at the CPKC Women’s Open golf tournament. Mandatory Credit: Dan Hamilton-Imagn Images Amanda Doherty and South Korea’s Jin Young Ko fired matching 4-under-par 66s on Friday to share the lead at the Kroger Queen City Championship in Cincinnati.
Ko went bogey-free with four birdies, including three over four holes late, while Doherty balanced five birdies against a solitary bogey to keep pace at 7-under 133 through two rounds.
Ko opened on the back nine and carded one birdie before the turn, on the par-5 14th. After seven straight pars, her game warmed up on No. 4 with a birdie, her first of two straight. She added another at the par-5 seventh hole.
A 15-time winner on the LPGA tour, Ko is seeking her first victory since 2023. Her best finish this season has been a tie for 27th at the Aramco Championship in early April.
“I got married two months ago and my husband was there last week, and after the game he told me, ‘Why (are) you so nervous before you hitting the ball?'” Ko said. “And he didn’t like say that before, like last five years, but he said that.
“And then after I heard (that) I tried to think about how did I play like the last two or three years, and I think I had some scared … play because I want to be better than better. I would say I’m perfection person. That’s why I don’t want make (a) mistake on the course.
“But after I heard that, I’m being a human so I can make mistakes on the course and (it’s) just acceptable. Just trying having fun like (when I was 10 years old).”
Doherty, on the other hand, is seeking her first career win following her debut in 2022.
“I think I’ve just been working on the right stuff and everything is kind of going the right direction,” Doherty said.
The pair overtook Ina Yoon and Chella Choi of South Korea and Japan’s Rio Takeda, all of whom had shared the lead at 4 under following the opening round on Thursday.
Choi and Takeda battled for par to remain in contention at 4 under (tied for fifth), while Yoon shot a 1-over 71 to fall into a tie for 10th with five other golfers.
England’s Lottie Woad might have had the round of the tournament with a 6-under 64. Woad collected six birdies over her first 10 holes, endured one bogey (No. 6) and finished her day with one more birdie at No. 8.
That effort left her alone in third place at 6 under.
“I think I hit maybe 15 greens today, so my bogey was a three-putt which was annoying,” Wood said. “Today I hit more fairways and just hit really good approaches.”
New Zealand’s Lydia Ko continued to show consistency on Friday, following her first-day 68 with a 3-under 67. She did make two bogeys, but she rallied with five birdies to remain in contention in fourth place at 5 under.
World No. 1 Nelly Korda and No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand are tied with Choi and Takeda at 4 under after their matching 67s. Jennifer Kupcho is right there with them at 4 under after carding a 4-under 66.
Korda is pursuing a third straight tournament win after winning the Chevron Championship and the Riviera Maya Open. Perhaps more impressive, she has failed to finish lower than second in 2026.
Tied with Yoon are Sophia Schubert (second-round 68), South Korea’s Haeran Ryu (66), England’s Jodi Ewart Shadoff (66), China’s Ruoning Yin (67) and Australia’s Cassie Porter (68).
