Padres announce agreement to transfer ownership to Jones-Feliciano group

Rebilas-Imagn Images The San Diego Padres announced on Saturday an agreement to transfer control of the franchise to a new ownership group led by investors Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano, who reportedly had bid a record $3.9 billion.
The framework for the deal had been agreed to in April, according to multiple reports, and still needs the approval of 75% of the MLB owners to finalize the sale. A vote could occur at the next quarterly owners meeting in June.
If approved, the sale price would shatter the previous record for an MLB franchise established when Steve Cohen purchased the New York Mets for $2.42 billion in 2020.
“The Padres are more than a baseball team; they are a unifying force in San Diego, rooted in community, connection, and belonging,” Jones and Feliciano, who are married, said in joint statement released through the team. “As life and business partners, and as a family, we are honored to lead this next chapter together.
“We have worked hard for everything we have achieved, and we have built it together. We see that same spirit in this team and its fans, and we know what it takes to win.”
Private equity billionaire Feliciano, founder of Clearlake Capital and part owner of the English Premier League’s Chelsea FC, and Jones were in the pool of bidders engaged by the Seidler Family to buy the team.
Longtime owner Peter Seidler died in 2023 and family was split on control of the team. John Seidler, currently chairman of the Padres, said in November the franchise would be sold. Forbes’ valuation of the Padres entering the 2026 season was $3.1 billion.
Feliciano and Clearlake Capital own more than 60% of Chelsea.
“We are committed to showing up, listening, and earning the trust of this community, while building on the strong foundation established by the Seidler family,” Jones and Feliciano said in their statement.
“This is about more than baseball — it’s about boosting the pride, energy, and connection that define the Padres, investing in community, deepening belonging, and ensuring this team remains accessible and endures for generations. We are all in — with the goal of bringing a World Series championship to San Diego.”
The Padres have not announced terms on the purchase nor specifics on the investor group. ESPN and The Athletic reported that Feliciano and Jones will have up to a 40% equity in the team, while some members and associates of the Seidler family will keep some equity.
The Athletic reported that the new ownership will buy about 60% of the franchise, with other investors expected to include the Jacobs family of San Diego, whose patriarch Irwin Jacobs co-founded Qualcomm, and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. Other potential investors would include a group led by Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees and Vuori investor Michael Persall, per The Athletic.
Feliciano is expected to become control person, succeeding John Seidler, who is Peter Seidler’s eldest brother.
“I’m thrilled that after a highly competitive process, Kwanza Jones and Jose E. Feliciano will become the next majority owners of the Padres,” John Seidler said in a statement. “When I became control person, my goal was to continue building on our recent success in pursuit of a World Series championship for the city of San Diego and our faithful fans. Now, as I pass the baton to Kwanza and Jose, I do so with full confidence that they share that vision, as well as the Padres deep commitment to San Diego. It’s what the team, our fans, and the community deserve.
“Our family loves this team,” he continued. “This is a bittersweet moment for us as we reflect on what the Padres have accomplished since my brother Peter became the steward of the franchise. I congratulate Kwanza, Jose, and the Padres, and wish them nothing but success. We look forward to a smooth transition.”

Dillon Dingler, Keider Montero guide Tigers past Rangers

Keider Montero (2-2) gave up one run on five hits, walked two and struck out two in 6 2/3 innings as Detroit evened the three-game series.
Gleyber Torres had two hits and an RBI for the Tigers before leaving with left side tightness. Riley Greene went 2-for-4 with a run and Wenceel Perez was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk.
Jake Burger hit a solo home run while Josh Smith and Josh Jung each had two hits for Texas.
Moments after Rangers right fielder Ezequiel Duran fielded Greene’s single and threw out Torres at the plate in the first, Dingler launched a homer that traveled 443 feet to left.
An inning later, Detroit took a 5-0 lead with a pair of two-out singles. Perez singled, stole second and scored on Kevin McGonigle’s grounder up the middle. McGonigle swiped second and came around to score on Torres’ bloop single to shallow right.
Montero gave up two walks in the third, but kept Texas off the board. In the fourth, Burger’s solo shot was the Rangers’ first hit and cut the Detroit lead to 5-1.
Duran and Smith posted back-to-back singles to lead off the fifth, but Montero induced a double play and a popout to escape the jam.
With one out in the eighth, the Rangers threatened with runners on second and third. Reliever Drew Anderson got Joc Pederson to ground out and struck out Burger. Anderson gave up two hits and struck out three in 2 1/3 innings of relief.
Rangers starter Kumar Rocker (1-3) gave up five runs on six hits in two innings.
Torres exited the game in the third with what was reported as left-side tightness.

Cardinals stave off Dodgers’ rally for 6th straight win

McGreevy (2-2) allowed three hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Right-hander Ryne Stanek and lefty JoJo Romero each pitched a scoreless inning before the Dodgers scored two runs on four straight hits against righty Riley O’Brien in the ninth.
O’Brien recorded two quick outs before giving up back-to-back infield singles to Kyle Tucker and Teoscar Hernandez. Max Muncy and Andy Pages followed with RBI singles before O’Brien struck out pinch hitter Dalton Rushing for his ninth save.
Los Angeles lost its fourth straight game and has scored three or fewer runs in seven of its last 11 games.
St. Louis took a 3-0 lead on four hits in the third inning. Ivan Herrera hit a leadoff double against Roki Sasaki (1-3) and scored on Alec Burleson’s double to right field.
Walker followed with a two-run blast to left field. The 372-foot shot was Walker’s 10th homer of the season and second in his last three games.
The Dodgers had plenty of early traffic on the basepaths against McGreevy, but they were held scoreless while hitting into four double plays in the first five innings.
Los Angeles put two runners on with one out in the second inning before Pages struck out and Hyeseong Kim grounded out.
The pattern continued in the third inning, when Alex Freeland hit a leadoff single and second baseman JJ Wetherholt started a double play with a diving catch on Shohei Ohtani’s liner.
Sasaki gave up three runs on five hits with two walks over six innings. He retired the final 10 batters he faced and threw a career-high 104 pitches.
Stanek replaced right-hander McGreevy to begin the seventh inning and retired two batters before Hernandez singled and Muncy walked. Both were stranded when Pages struck out.
The Dodgers were held without a home run for the fifth straight game and have hit a total of three homers in their past 11 games.

Saba Lobjanidze's brace sparks Atlanta over Montreal

Alexey Miranchuk had two assists while Pedro Amador and Cooper Sanchez added an assist apiece for Atlanta (3-7-1, 10 points), which won its third straight match across all competitions and second straight in MLS play. It also snapped a four-match home winless streak (0-3-1).
Montreal (3-7-0, 9 points) saw a two-match win streak come to an end while its road losing streak reached four. It also finished the match with 10 men after Brayan Vera received a red card in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.
Latte Lath put Atlanta ahead in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time thanks to an interception by Sanchez. The Ivorian striker played a ball forward to Miranchuk, then scored on Miranchuk’s return pass to make it 2-1.
Lobjanidze upped Atlanta United’s lead to 3-1 in the 50th minute, scoring off Sanchez’s assist.
Atlanta equalized in the 41st minute with Lobjanidze’s first goal of the year. After receiving a pass from Miranchuk, Lobjanidze’s shot deflected off Montreal goalkeeper Thomas Gillier’s hand and trickled past the goal line, tying the match at 1-1.
Matty Longstaff scored Montreal’s lone goal of the evening in the sixth minute.
Lucas Hoyos finished the evening with four saves. Gillier stopped two Atlanta shots.
Atlanta United won back-to-back MLS regular-season matches for the first time since May 24 and 28, 2025. They have outscored opponents 7-2 during their win streak.
Montreal lost for the first time under interim head coach Phillipe Eullafroy.
Miranchuk has two goals and two assists in his last three matches across all competitions.
