With March Madness looming, Alabama coach Nate Oats is trying to coax the best out of Crimson Tide guard Mark Sears.

That process continues Wednesday night when No. 4 Alabama travels to Columbia, Mo., to face No. 15 Missouri in a high-powered Southeastern Conference matchup.

Oats called out Sears on Saturday after the then-second-ranked Crimson Tide (21-4, 10-2 SEC) fell to visiting No. 1 Auburn 94-85.

“He shot 4 of 17,” Oats said. “Obviously, he’s a competitor. He wants to win at a high level. He’s been able to impact winning for most of his career by scoring the ball well. Yet, he was 2 of 6 at the rim. He was 2 of 11 from (3-point range). He was 2 of 6 at the rim, and those are typically the more efficient shots you’d get.”

Sears is averaging a team-high 17.8 points per game and shooting 34.5 percent from 3-point range. However, he is shooting just 39.7 percent overall from the floor.

Last season, Sears averaged 21.5 points while shooting 43.6 percent from beyond the arc and 50.8 percent overall.

Oats also has been concerned about Sears’ defensive and playmaking regression this season.

“We’ve got to be able to play hard when the shots aren’t falling,” Oats said. “A sign of high-character guys is how hard they play when the shots aren’t dropping. Can you keep moving the ball? Maybe sometimes (Sears) needs to get 10 assists.”

Oats is eager to see how his team responds to an emotionally draining defeat.

“We had a chance to become No. 1 in the country,” he said. “We had a chance to be No. 1 in the league. All that’s out right now. What we have right now is a chance to play again on Wednesday against Missouri, and we got to answer the bell.”

Missouri (19-6, 8-4) brings a 16-1 home record into the midweek game. The Tigers scored decisive victories last week at home against Oklahoma, 82-58, and on the road against Georgia, 87-74.

Last season, Missouri went 0-18 in league play and lost in the first round of the SEC tournament.

“I mean, I don’t really think it’s a thing of us trying to prove anybody wrong at this point,” Missouri guard Tamar Bates told SEC Network. “We’re just proving ourselves right. We know who we are, we know who we’ve got in that locker room, and at the end of the day, we’re gonna keep playing ball.”

Bates leads Missouri’s balanced attack with 13.4 points per game. Forward Mark Mitchell averages 12.9 points and 4.7 rebounds, while guard Caleb Grill averages 12.8 points off the bench on 46.7 percent shooting from 3-point range.

The Tigers are coming off one of their best efforts of the season. They dominated the last 20 minutes during their victory over Georgia on Saturday.

“We had 18 assists, three turnovers, nine steals and we ended up winning the rebounding war,” coach Dennis Gates said during his postgame radio show. “So I’m just proud of our guys to be able to do what they did on the road — 28 minutes of the lead, five minutes of the deficit. And we just fought back in the second half, we put up 49 points.”

Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill homered in the four-run eighth inning to help the visiting San Diego Padres rally for a 5-3 win on Sunday afternoon and extend the Miami Marlins’ losing streak to a franchise-record 12 straight games.

Machado also had an RBI double in the fifth that sparked the comeback after being down 3-0.

Jake Cronenworth contributed three hits and scored twice, and Ty France, Luis Rengifo and Merrill had two hits each for San Diego, which swept the three-game series.

Padres starter Walker Buehler surrendered three runs (two earned) and four hits in 5 1/3 innings. The veteran right-hander struck out seven and walked two.

San Diego relievers Yuki Matsui, Wandy Peralta (2-2) and Adrian Morejon combined to keep Miami scoreless for 2 2/3 innings before Mason Miller pitched the ninth for his 27th save.

Kyle Stowers doubled and homered for the Marlins, who had lost 11 in a row three other times in team history, most recently in June of 2011.

Miami starter Janson Junk went 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run and scattering seven hits. The right-hander struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

Lake Bachar (1-2) came out for the eighth trying to protect a two-run lead, but gave up a leadoff single to Cronenworth. Machado then lined a 3-2 fastball over the fence in center to tie it 3-3.

One out later, Bachar left a sweeper over the middle of the plate and Merrill pulled it over the fence in right for a 4-3 lead.

The inning would continue with a double by Rengifo and an RBI single by Luis Campusano that made it 5-3.

Buehler walked Liam Hicks and Griffin Conine to start the second inning. Hicks broke for third with Rengifo charging on a bunt attempt by Esteury Ruiz, who pulled his bat back as Padres shortstop Sung-Mun Song was trying to beat Hicks to third.

Campusano’s throw went into left field, allowing Hicks to score on the throwing error for a 1-0 lead.

Ruiz then sacrificed Conine to third and he scored on a line drive over the drawn-in infield by Graham Pauley for a 2-0 lead.

Stowers led off the third by pulling a changeup into the seats high above the right-field fence to make it 3-0.

Junk was one out from being eligible for the win, but Cronenworth singled with two outs in the fifth and then scored from first on a double down the left-field line by Machado to cut it to 3-1 and end Junk’s afternoon.

CJ Abrams and James Wood each homered twice as the Washington Nationals beat the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 10-7 on Sunday to take the rubber game in the series between NL wild card contenders.

Abrams finished 3-for-5 with three RBIs to boost his numbers to seven homers and 14 RBIs in his last seven games. Wood became the fifth MLB player to reach the 30-homer mark this season.

Dylan Crews added three hits and Riley Cornelio (2-1) pitched two innings for the win. Brady House, recalled Sunday after the Nationals traded Curtis Mead to the Boston Red Sox for pitcher Connelly Early on Saturday, had two doubles and drove in a run.

Geraldo Perdomo and Ketel Marte homered for the D-backs and Gabriel Moreno had two doubles and a sacrifice fly.

The D-backs took a 1-0 lead in the first. Perdomo walked and came around when Moreno doubled down the left field line.

In the Washington second, House doubled and Jacob Young tied it with an RBI single.

Perdomo smacked an 0-1 pitch into the Nationals bullpen in right to make it 2-1 in the third.

Abrams tied it with a homer to center in the third, setting a record for homers by a Nationals shortstop with his 26th of the season.

Marte homered leading off the fourth and Arizona led 3-2.

Corbin Carroll doubled leading off the fifth and scored on a Moreno sacrifice fly.

Nunez walked leading off the bottom half and Wood ended starter Kohl Drake’s afternoon with a two-run bomb to straightaway center. Daylen Lile greeted Jonathan Loaisiga (2-3) with a single and, one out later, Abrams connected for his second homer of the game to make it 6-4.

House and Young added RBI doubles to make it 8-4 in the seventh, then another run scored on pitcher Brandyn Garcia’s throwing error.

Arizona’s Ildemaro Vargas hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth to make it 9-5, but Wood answered with a solo homer.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases on walks with no outs in the ninth and got runs on a Ryan Waldschmidt’s single and Nolan Arenado’s groundout. With the bases loaded and the go-ahead run at the plate, Clayton Beeter retired Tyler Locklear on a grounder to second to pick up his 10th save.

Washington starter Miles Mikolas gave up three runs over four innings. Drake allowed four runs in four-plus innings in his second major league start.

Tyrone Taylor’s go-ahead three-run homer in the sixth inning propelled the New York Mets to an 8-3 victory on Sunday over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers.

The veteran outfielder greeted reliever Evan Phillips with a 405-foot blast into the left field seats for his eighth homer of the season and fifth since July 4. It doubled as the Mets’ first hit since the first.

Marcus Semien, a defensive replacement in the seventh, added another three-run shot to cap a four-run seventh for the Mets as they snapped a three-game skid.

Four relievers combined to limit the Dodgers to three singles and one hit by pitch over the final five innings. Cionel Perez (4-3) pitched two perfect innings and struck out three.

Los Angeles’ bullpen did not match the Mets. Jack Dreyer walked two batters in the sixth and got only one out before being replaced by Phillips (0-2), who allowed a homer for the fourth time in his last five appearances. Will Klein gave up four runs in the seventh on two hits and two walks.

The first three Mets batters got hits off Dodgers starter Emmet Sheehan, with leadoff hitter A.J. Green doubling and scoring on Francisco Lindor’s single. Bo Bichette (2-for-4) followed with another base hit. After that, Sheehan allowed just two walks and one hit batsman while fanning five over five innings.

Los Angeles scored twice in the third off Mets starter Freddy Peralta. Eliezer Alfonzo hit a leadoff double. After an out and an Andy Pages walk, Freddy Freeman doubled home Alfonzo. Max Muncy’s groundout made it 2-1.

Freeman finished 2-for-4 for his fourth straight multi-hit game. Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez also went 2-for-4.

Peralta needed 93 pitches to get through four innings. He gave up six hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out three.

The Dodgers, who saw their four-game winning streak end, loaded the bases off Luke Weaver with two out in the eighth. However, Weaver made a great play on a Hernandez dribbler between the mound and third base to end the threat.
