No. 19 Arizona in search of energy vs. Baylor

Sylvanie-Imagn Images Once preseason top-10 teams, Baylor and Arizona have faced ups and downs, with their share of signature wins coupled with injury issues and even time spent out of the rankings.
Both are firmly in the NCAA Tournament picture now as they meet for the second time this season on Monday night in Waco, Texas. Unranked at the time, Arizona rolled to an 81-70 victory over then-No. 25 Baylor on Jan. 14 in Tucson, Ariz.
Now, Arizona (17-8, 11-3 Big 12) is ranked No. 19 while Baylor (16-9, 8-6 Big 12) remains unranked. But the Bears are 12-1 at home and are coming off a 74-71 overtime victory over visiting West Virginia on Saturday.
Arizona has lost its last two games, at Kansas State on Tuesday and at home against No. 6 Houston on Saturday. Wildcats coach Tommy Lloyd didn’t hold back when asked about the upcoming matchup vs. Baylor.
“You guys think we’re going to get our (tails) kicked at Baylor because we’re tired, we’ve been on a long stretch,” Lloyd said about playing three games in seven days. “We’re going to play a road game. Our heads are going to be down. Let’s see. Let’s see what team shows up. We might. We might get our (tails) kicked Monday, and then we’ve got to keep moving but we might not.
“I want to see what we have. I want to see what our guys are made of. I want to see how they respond.”
The Wildcats went 2-of-22 (9.1 percent) from 3-point range in the 73-70 loss to Kansas State, and then went 5-of-23 (21.7 percent) from deep in the 62-58 loss to Houston.
Arizona’s roster is not constructed to rely heavily on the long ball, but it’s an area that can improve.
“It’s no secret. I’m not telling anything crazy. We’re not the best 3-point shooting team you’ve ever seen,” Lloyd said. “We’re a gritty team, and it’s a little bit ugly sometimes. But that’s just how we ended up being built. We’re OK with it.
“We’ve won a lot of games doing that. I thought we had some good looks at 3 (on Saturday). It would’ve been nice if a few extra ones would have went down. Obviously, the last couple games would have made a huge difference. But we’re still in the game, giving ourselves a chance to win.”
For Baylor, it’s an opportunity to win consecutive games for the first time since Jan 22-25. The Bears have alternated between wins and losses the last seven games.
Baylor has battled a number of injuries throughout the season, but one consistent has been Norchad Omier, who posted another double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in the victory over West Virginia. It was Omier’s 13th double-double of the season.
“Everybody plays a part,” Omier said. “Jeremy (Roach) coming off the bench, that’s a great lift. Jalen (Celestine’s) 3-point shooting out there is definitely good. It opens up the court. Just a blessing to have almost everybody on the court.”
Omier leads the Bears in scoring (15.7 points per game) and rebounding (10.2 per game).
Caleb Love paces the Wildcats with 15.9 points per game but has struggled from the 3-point line this season. The guard is shooting just 30.1 percent from deep, including 2-of-21 (9.5 percent) over his last three games.
From a statistics standpoint, Baylor and Arizona are evenly matched. The Wildcats have the third-highest scoring offense in the Big 12 at 81.3 points per game, while the Bears are fifth at 79.1. In scoring defense, Arizona is No. 9 in the Big 12 at 69.5 points allowed and Baylor is No. 10 at 69.9.

Mexico legend Chicharito to sign with USL's Dallas franchise

Mandatory Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez will continue his playing career in Texas after signing with USL Championship expansion club Atletico Dallas.
The 38-year-old Mexican striker agreed to a two-year contract that includes a club option for a third season. Hernandez becomes the first player signed by Atletico Dallas, which will begin play in 2027 under head coach Peter Luccin.
The agreement is subject to approval from the league and federation.
“I didn’t come here simply to finish my career,” Hernandez said. “I came here to help build the future of football in Dallas.”
Atletico Dallas will play its home matches at the Cotton Bowl while competing in the USL Championship, a second-tier professional soccer league in the United States below MLS.
Hernandez has not played competitively since appearing for Chivas in November 2025. He became a free agent after scoring three goals across all competitions during his final season with the Mexican club.
The move extends a career that has also included stops with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, West Ham United, Sevilla and the Los Angeles Galaxy.
“I’ve been fortunate to live the dreams that every young footballer hopes to experience,” Hernandez said. “I’ve worn some of the biggest shirts in the world and played in incredible stadiums in front of passionate supporters. Opportunities like this, though, are different.”
Hernandez scored 52 goals in 109 appearances for Mexico, making him the national team’s all-time leading scorer. He last played internationally in 2019 and worked as a television analyst during the 2026 World Cup.
His addition gives Atletico Dallas an established name around which to begin building their inaugural roster. Luccin, a former Atletico Madrid midfielder, was appointed as the club’s first coach in February.
Dallas will be the eighth club of Hernandez’s senior career and marks his return to American soccer after playing for the Galaxy from 2020-23.

Travelers to be part of PGA Tour’s Championship Series

Mandatory Credit: John Dufour-Imagn Images The Travelers Championship, the PGA Tour’s annual stop outside Hartford, Conn., is the first tournament to be formally named to the tour’s upcoming Championship Series.
In 2028 the tour is introducing a two-tiered schedule, with paths called the Championship Series and the Challenger Series. The Championship Series will be reserved for the sport’s top players and feature up to 24 events.
Those 24 include The Players Championship and the four majors, though those aren’t operated by the PGA Tour and have their own criteria for qualifying.
As the series is an evolution of the current set of “signature events,” it was expected that the most prestigious events on the calendar would be selected for the Championship Series.
The Travelers has been a signature event every year since the format was introduced in 2023. The PGA Tour has been coming to Hartford since 1952 and to TPC River Highlands since 1984.
“This partnership with Travelers and with the PGA Tour has taken the tournament to incredible new heights,” Travelers tournament director Nathan Grube said in a release. “We’re proud of the Travelers Championship, the economic impact it makes on our community and the state of Connecticut, and the hundreds of local charities that continue to benefit financially.”

Caitlin Clark-led Fever aim to stymie Storm

She met former President Barack Obama, unveiled her new line of basketballs and scored 17 points to help Team Spoon defeat Team Coop 129-122 Saturday in Chicago.
Clark and the Eastern Conference-leading Indiana Fever (17-10), who are riding a three-game winning streak, return from the All-Star break with a game Tuesday in Seattle (6-23), which has lost six in a row and is in last place.
“I’m excited this weekend is packed with a lot of stuff. I never want to take (All-Star weekend) for granted,” said Clark, who missed the All-Star Game as a rookie last season because of an injury.
“Any time you get to put on a uniform and play an All-Star Game is really special. It’s really a unique experience for myself as I never really got to play in a true All-Star Game (before).”
Clark was joined at the All-Star Game by teammates Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell, the latter who scored a game-high 28 points for Team Coop.
The Storm were represented in Chicago by 20-year-old center Dominique Malonga, who threw down a dunk off a pass from Angel Reese. Malonga is averaging a team-high 16.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.3 blocks.
“I wanted to have an All-Star season but not necessarily be an All-Star,” said Malonga, who missed eight games earlier this season with a concussion. “I don’t know if it makes sense. I knew we were rebuilding and I just wanted to step up for this team and just have the season of me being a starter and just bringing all the work that I put in the offseason.”
This will be the third and final meeting between the Fever and Storm in the regular season, the first in Seattle. Indiana prevailed 89-78 on May 17 and 110-107 on July 17, with Clark scoring a career-high 45 points and adding 10 assists in the latter.
