The Detroit Pistons plan to re-sign wing Kevin Huerter to a three-year, $27 million contract, multiple outlets reported on the first day of the NBA’s free agent period.

Free agency opened Tuesday at 6 p.m. ET, at which time teams were free to negotiate with players other than their own.

The Pistons acquired Huerter, 27, at the trade deadline from the Chicago Bulls in a deal that also involved the Minnesota Timberwolves. Through the complex maneuvering, the Pistons also gained a first-round draft pick used to select guard Ebuka Okorie, who was Stanford’s leading scorer as a freshman in his only season there.

Huerter was acquired to help the Pistons score from long range. Huerter has career figures of 36.8% shooting from 3-point range and 11.4 points per game. After the trade, he failed to find his role with the Pistons immediately and also sustained multiple injuries that caused him to miss games. He found a groove in the final 11 games he played and averaged 11.5 points and 38.2% on 3-pointers in that span.

In other transactions Tuesday:

–Luke Kennard, a career 44.2% shooter from distance, agreed to a two-year deal worth $13 million with the Phoenix Suns, ESPN reported.

Kennard, 30, has led the league in 3-point shooting three different seasons, including 2025-26. After beginning the season with Atlanta, Kennard was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 5. He shot 44.8% from long range in 32 regular-season games with the Lakers, averaging 9.0 points.

In 10 playoff games last season, the No. 12 overall pick of the 2017 draft averaged 11.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists.

–The Brooklyn Nets are adding guard Keon Ellis on a two-year, $18 million deal, multiple outlets reported.

Undrafted out of Alabama in 2022, Ellis signed with Sacramento and played there the first three-plus seasons of his career. He was traded to Cleveland on Feb. 1 of last season, part of a three-team trade that also involved Chicago.

In 72 games between Sacramento and Cleveland, Ellis put up 6.7 points per game. The 26-year-old has averaged 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 225 career games with 60 starts.

–ESPN reported that veteran big man Zach Collins is staying in Chicago, agreeing to a two-year, $17 million contract with the Bulls.

After playing three seasons in Portland, the 10th pick in 2017 played for San Antonio for three-plus seasons, getting traded to Chicago in February 2025. He has averaged 8.0 points and 4.9 rebounds in 388 career games, making 83 starts.

Collins played in only 10 games last season after suffering a wrist fracture in camp and then spraining a toe three weeks after his return in December. He put up 9.7 points and 5.6 rebounds in that short span.

–The Atlanta Hawks acquired guard Devin Carter and a 2033 second-round draft pick from the Sacramento Kings, receiving the draft rights to Alpha Kaba — the 60th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.

The Kings selected Carter with the 13th overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft, and he appeared in 38 games (12 starts) in the 2025-26 season. He averaged 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists in 18.4 minutes per game. Carter, 24, became expendable, however, when the Kings took guards Darius Acuff Jr. and Emanuel Sharp in the draft last week. Acuff was the No. 7 overall pick.

Kaba was the No. 60 overall pick in 2017 and has not played in the NBA. Now 30, he plays for the Shenzhen Leopards in the Chinese Basketball Association and for the national team of Guinea.

–Free agent small forward Simone Fontecchio plans to sign a one-year contract to return to the Miami Heat, ESPN reported.

Fontecchio, 30, averaged 8.5 points and 3.0 rebounds in 70 games (nine starts) last season with Miami. The Italian also shot 37.5% shooting from 3-point range.

He has averaged 7.8 points and 2.9 rebounds in 263 career games (58 starts) with the Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons and Heat.

Harmony Tan blocked by Serena Williams 4 years after Wimbledon upset

On the day of Serena Williams’ return to Wimbledon Tuesday, an opponent from her last Wimbledon appearance dug up some dirt about the tennis legend on social media.

Harmony Tan, who upset Williams in a three-plus-hour battle in the first round of the 2022 event in London, posted on her Instagram account that Williams blocked her on social media after the loss occurred.

“So 4 years ago after the handshake, she blocked me also on Instagram, btw,” Tan posted in an Instagram story accompanied by a sweating emoji and a laughing emoji.

Williams, 44, played her first grand-slam match since the 2022 U.S. Open on Tuesday after she was given a wild-card berth into Wimbledon. She fell 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3 in a two-hour, 22-minute match against Australia’s Maya Joint.

Tan reached the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022 after the defeat of Williams, the deepest major run of her career. The 28-year-old Frenchwoman hasn’t made the main draw of a Grand Slam since the 2022 U.S. Open, coming up one match short of making this year’s Wimbledon field when she lost to Italy’s Tyra Caterina Grant in the final round of qualifying.

That denied Tan the opportunity for a Wimbledon rematch with Williams.

“She’s a legend, you know? She can come back everywhere. I hope I can qualify and maybe play Serena for the first round,” Tan told WTA during the lead-up to Wimbledon.

Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Kenji Cabrera will miss an extended stretch after undergoing surgery Monday to repair a fifth metatarsal fracture in his right foot.

The club said Cabrera is expected to fully recover in four to six months, which could affect the rest of his MLS season depending on how quickly he recovers. A four-month recovery might allow him to return late in the campaign, but a longer timeframe could push his comeback past the season’s end.

Cabrera has played in 13 matches (five starts) in 2026, compiling one goal and three assists in all competitions. Since joining Vancouver from Peru’s FBC Melgar in July 2025, the 23-year-old has appeared in 26 matches (seven starts), producing three goals and three assists.

The injury removes another attacking option from a Whitecaps side already trying to manage its roster through the middle of the season. Cabrera has also been part of Peru’s senior national team picture this year, earning three call-ups in 2026, including for two June friendlies.

Vancouver (10-2-2, 32 points) sits in first place in MLS’ Western Conference. The Whitecaps return from the league’s extended World Cup break for a July 16 road match against the Chicago Fire.

Colson Montgomery and Junior Perez homered during Chicago’s seven-run third inning as the visiting White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 9-3 on Tuesday night.

Jacob Gonzalez had three hits and drove in three runs and Andrew Benintendi provided three hits. Tristan Peters added two hits and scored twice as Chicago won for the sixth time in its last eight games.

By winning on back-to-back nights, the White Sox will win a series against Baltimore for the first time since July 2021 regardless of the result of Wednesday afternoon’s series finale.

Erick Fedde (3-6) picked up the victory, going five innings and yielding three runs on five hits, striking out and walking three apiece.

Tyler Schweitzer pitched the final four innings for the rookie’s first career save, striking out three without a walk and allowing four hits.

Gunnar Henderson had two hits and scored two runs and Blaze Alexander and Samuel Basallo each notched two hits for the Orioles, whose losing streak grew to four games. They have lost six of their last seven games.

Orioles starter Trey Gibson (1-3) was dinged for eight runs on seven hits and six walks in 2 2/3 innings. He struck out five.

The White Sox scored on Benintendi’s first-inning double to open the scoring. The Orioles countered in the bottom of the inning on Basallo’s run-scoring single.

Chicago was back on top on Montgomery’s two-run homer, which also drove in Benintendi, in the third. The White Sox kept going, with Gonzalez driving in two runs with a single before Perez’s three-run shot.

Gonzalez, who had his second three-RBI game in as many nights, doubled in a fourth-inning run with two outs.

Dylan Beavers’s RBI double and Pete Alonso’s RBI single drove in Baltimore runs in the fifth.

The White Sox finished with 11 hits, though they didn’t score after the fourth inning. Chicago batters struck out 13 times.
