Nashville's Warren Madrigal scores twice to earn draw with D.C. United

Substitute Warren Madrigal scored his third and fourth goals of the season and host Nashville SC rallied from two behind late to a 2-2 draw against 10-man D.C. United on Saturday night.

Andy Najar was influential on both of Madrigal’s tallies, providing the assist on his 89th-minute leveler and a key pass on the first that came only moments after the 75th-minute ejection of D.C. defender Silvan Hefti.

That was enough for the Coyotes (7-1-3, 24 points) to avoid a first league loss at home, although they still dropped points there for the first time in five regular-season matches.

Louis Munteanu scored his fourth goal in his last three games for D.C. (4-4-4, 16 points), which extended its league unbeaten run to five.

Lucas Bartlett added his first MLS goal since 2024 for the Black-and-Red, who looked in control while playing 11-on-11.

But the flow of play changed immediately after Hefti received his second booking for a foul to stop a promising attack, with Madrigal’s first strike coming only seconds later.

Matthew Corcoran chested down Najar’s entry pass into the right side of the penalty area, turned and fired a shot that forced Sean Johnson into a low, sprawling save.

The rebound fell directly to Madrigal, who tapped into an open net from close range for a 2-1 deficit.

If Madrigal’s first was opportunistic, his second was classy.

This time he took down Najar’s early cross himself, bringing the ball down off his chest and to his feet at the top of the penalty area, where he struck an exceptional first-time volley into the bottom corner that left Johnson no chance.

Madrigal had entered the match at 62 minutes as a replacement for Alex Muyl.

Munteanu put D.C. in front at 25 minutes, reaching Hefti’s dipping early cross from the right at the far post and calmly guiding a header past Brian Schwake and into the bottom left corner.

Bartlett doubled the lead eight minutes later from a corner, rising to meet Keisuke Kurokawa’s inswinging service and power a header between Schwake and the right upright.

Originally ruled offside, referee Randy Encarnacion gave the goal after consulting replay that showed Jared Stroud — while standing in an offside position — had not interfered with Schwake’s ability to make a save.

Alec Bohm homers twice, Phillies handle Rockies

Alec Bohm hit two home runs and drove in four runs in his return to the lineup as the host Philadelphia Phillies evened the weekend series with a 9-3 win over the Colorado Rockies on Saturday evening.

Kyle Schwarber added the go-ahead three-run home run in the third as the Phillies lineup tagged Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (1-4) for seven runs (six earned) in five innings.

Willi Castro had a home run and Kyle Karros hit a two-run double for Colorado, which had won 9-7 in 11 innings on Friday.

A two-day break served Bohm well, as the third baseman led off the third with his first home run since Opening Day on March 26 to tie the game at 1-1. Castro’s solo shot for the Rockies in the second inning had opened the scoring.

Bryson Stott and Trea Turner followed Bohm’s homer with singles and Schwarber cleared the bases with his second home run in as many nights to give Philadelphia a 4-1 lead.

Adolis Garcia doubled with one out and Edmundo Sosa brought him home with an RBI single to complete the Phillies’ five-run outburst.

Colorado responded immediately in the fourth. Karros’ double with two outs scored Troy Johnston (single) and Jake McCarthy (walk) and reduced the Philadelphia advantage to 5-3.

Bohm made it the fifth multi-homer game of his career with another solo blast in the bottom of the frame.

Phillies starter Aaron Nola was left with no decision after being pulled with the tying run at the plate with two outs in the fifth. He allowed three runs with six hits and two walks, striking out four.

Tim Mayza (1-1) relieved Nola and got out of the jam.

Colorado’s defense was to blame for the Phillies’ run in the fifth. Garcia went from first to third after shortstop Castro booted a grounder and then scored on Brandon Marsh’s sacrifice fly.

Bohm capped off a 3-for-4 night at the plate with a two-run double in the eighth.

Philadelphia first baseman Bryce Harper exited after the first inning with a migraine. He was replaced by Felix Reyes, who went 0-for-4.

The first pitch of the game was initially set for 6:05 local time but was delayed approximately 25 minutes due to inclement weather in the area.

Hurricanes sweep Flyers in OT, advance to East finals

NHL: Stanley Cup Playoffs-Carolina Hurricanes at Philadelphia FlyersMay 9, 2026; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; Carolina Hurricanes center Logan Stankoven (22) celebrates a goal with teammates against the Philadelphia Flyers in game four of the second round of the 2026 Stanely Cup Playoffs at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Jackson Blake scored his second goal of the game in overtime and the visiting Carolina Hurricanes swept their second straight Stanley Cup Playoffs series with a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 4 of their Eastern Conference semifinal matchup on Saturday evening.

At 5:31 of the extra session, Blake scored off Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar’s left shoulder from between the hash marks to finish off a rush and advance the Hurricanes to the conference finals against either the Buffalo Sabres or Montreal Canadiens. That series is tied 1-1 entering Game 3 on Sunday.

Blake also had an assist, Logan Stankoven also scored, Taylor Hall had three assists and Frederik Andersen made 15 saves for Carolina, which became the first team since the Edmonton Oilers in 1985 to begin a postseason 8-0.

Tyson Foerster and Alex Bump scored and Vladar made 37 saves for the Flyers.

Foerster scored his first goal of the playoffs to give Philadelphia a 1-0 lead at 7:50 of the first period.

Porter Martone fed a pass ahead to Trevor Zegras, who had more speed as they both crossed the Carolina blue line. Zegras pulled up along the wall and saucered a centering pass to Foerster entering the zone. He brought the puck to the right hash marks before scoring with a wrist shot.

Blake took a wrist shot from near the wall above the right faceoff circle and the puck hit the midsection of Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale as he battled Logan Stankoven in front of the crease, causing it to be redirected into his own net and tying it at 12:35 of the second period.

The Hurricanes briefly thought they moved ahead on a goal by Mark Jankowski at 13:03 of the second, but the Flyers successfully challenged for goalie interference on William Carrier as he jostled with Oliver Bonk in front of the crease.

Hall made a centering pass to Stankoven on a 3-on-2 rush and he redirected the puck into the net for his NHL-leading seventh goal of the postseason, giving the Hurricanes their first lead of the game, 2-1, at 4:13 of the third period.

That lead didn’t last long as Travis Konecny forced a turnover below the Carolina goal line and passed the puck out front to Bump, who scored with a one-timer from between the hash marks to tie it at 5:52.

Michael Wacha dominates, Royals extend Tigers' skid to 5 games

MLB: Detroit Tigers at Kansas City RoyalsMay 9, 2026; Kansas City, Missouri, USA; Kansas City Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. (7) rounds the bases after hitting an in park home run during the first inning against the Detroit Tigers at Kauffman Stadium. Mandatory Credit: William Purnell-Imagn Images

Michael Wacha allowed two hits over seven scoreless innings, Bobby Witt Jr. sped his way to a two-run inside-the-park homer and Michael Massey broke things open with a conventional three-run shot Saturday night, as the host Kansas City Royals beat the scuffling Detroit Tigers 5-1.

Wacha (4-2), who turns 35 in July and boasts an ERA of 2.63, yielded only a single to Kerry Carpenter and a double from Spencer Torkelson, walking two and striking out six on 89 pitches to help the Royals take the first two of this three-game set. Kansas City, which secured its series win over Detroit since August of 2024, is 12-5 since losing eight in a row.

Riley Greene had an RBI double in the eighth inning for the Tigers, who managed just four hits while matching a season high with their fifth consecutive loss. Detroit swept a three-game home set during the Royals’ extended skid last month, but is in danger of that favor being returned this weekend.

The Royals wasted no time getting to Detroit opener Burch Smith (0-2). Maikel Garcia led off the bottom of the first with a double into the left-center gap and scored one batter later when Witt inside-outed a pitch down the right-field line. Carpenter severely misplayed the ball off the sidewall, and it rolled far enough away for Witt to circle the bases for his fifth homer of the season and his second career inside-the-parker.

Carpenter exited shortly after with left shoulder soreness from slamming into the wall on the play.

Kansas City made it 5-0 in the fourth. With Ty Madden on the mound for Detroit, Carter Jensen drew a one-out walk and Jac Caglianone singled. Then with two outs, Massey sent a drive out to right-center to give the Royals a hefty advantage.

The Tigers, who have totaled 11 runs in the last five contests, finally got on the board against Matt Strahm. Kevin McGonigle singled to open the eighth and eventually scored on Greene’s two-out double.
