Shakira Austin had 18 points and 11 rebounds and scored the game’s last four points as the visiting Washington Mystics defeated the expansion Toronto Tempo 68-65 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Sonia Citron led the Mystics with 26 points and Kiki Iriafen added 12 points and 16 rebounds.

Marina Mabrey scored 27 points and Brittney Sykes added 14 to lead the Tempo.

Toronto scored the first five points of the third quarter to close within 37-35. Citron made a jumper for Washington’s first points of the period, but Mabrey’s 3-pointer pulled the Tempo within one point.

Citron made consecutive 3-pointers during an 8-0 run that gave Washington 47-38 lead. Mabrey made a free throw to end the run and Sykes scored the Tempo’s final four points to trim the lead to 51-47 at the end of the third quarter.

Toronto’s Laura Juskiate scored on a put-back to start the fourth quarter and trim the lead to two before Iriafen scored the next three points to give the Mystics a 54-49 lead. Mabrey scored four points during an 8-2 run that gave Toronto a 57-56 lead.

Citron scored five points as Washington took a five-point lead, but Sabally made a layup and Juskaite added a 3-pointer to tie the score at 63 with 1:53 left. Iriafen made one free throw, but Mabrey made two to give the Tempo a 65-64 lead with 32 seconds remaining.

Austin canned two free throws with 18 seconds left to retake the lead. Sykes missed a 3-pointer and Austin added two more free throws with 11 seconds left to go up by three.

A Mabrey turnover on a jump ball ended things.

The score was tied three times and the lead changed hands twice before Georgia Amoore’s 3-pointer completed a 9-0 run that gave the Mystics a 13-6 lead.

Julie Allemand’s 3-pointer ended the run as well as a 4 1/2-minute scoring drought for the Tempo. Nyara Sabally added a layup to pull Toronto within two points before Iriafen’s layup with 32 seconds left gave Washington a 17-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Citron’s layup started the second-quarter scoring and pushed the lead to six points before Mabrey’s six straight free throws pulled the Tempo even at 19. The Mystics scored the next five points, but Mabrey and Sykes each made a basket and two free throws to help Toronto take a 27-26 lead.

The score was tied at 28 before Washington scored five straight points on its way to a 37-30 halftime lead.

Red-hot Revolution encounter slowly improving Union

This season is starting to look a lot like last year for the New England Revolution.

At this time in 2025, the Revs were in the middle of a nine-game MLS streak without a loss. One year later, they are rolling again as they’ve gone 5-0-1 in their last six MLS matches to rise to second place in the Eastern Conference.

When the Revolution (6-3-1, 19 points) host the Philadelphia Union (1-7-3, 6 points) Saturday in Foxborough, Mass., they look to extend their unbeaten streak and maintain their perfect record (5-0-0) at home.

This year, the Revs want to cash in on their streak — unlike last season, when they followed their successful run with a nine-game winless streak and failed to make the playoffs for the second straight year.

“We’ve had good results in the last several weeks, which helps the dynamic, always,” Revolution coach Marko Mitrovic said. “We want to be sure that we are not emotional thinking like, ‘Oh, now we are winning,’ and we don’t ignore things that we need to do good.”

While the Revolution have steamrolled their five foes at home, outscoring them 13-2, Saturday’s 1-0 win over visiting Charlotte FC was a struggle. Carles Gil scored the lone goal on a penalty kick seven minutes into second-half stoppage time.

Gil (three goals, three assists) and set-piece weapon Luca Langoni (one goal, six assists) rev up the offense for the Revs.

For Philadelphia, this season bears no resemblance to last year when it captured the Supporter’s Shield by compiling the best record in MLS.

After opening the season with six straight MLS defeats, the Union have gone 1-1-3 over their last five matches. That includes a scoreless draw last week against Eastern Conference leader Nashville SC.

“What we’re trying to do is bring stability to the back line and I think you’ve seen that over the last four or five weeks,” Philadelphia coach Bradley Carnell said.

The Union have the fewest goals of any team in the Eastern Conference with nine. Milan Iloski and Danley Jean Jacques are their lone players who have scored multiple goals with two apiece.

“It’s a team that’s very aggressive going forward, pushing the ball forward as soon as possible and trying to win their attacks, very good on winning second balls. That’s kind of their identity,” Mitrovic said. “We are not looking at the standings. Every game is unique.”

Evander's FC Cincinnati surging into road tilt with sinking Charlotte

Two middling teams in the Eastern Conference clash Saturday night when FC Cincinnati takes on host Charlotte FC.

Cincinnati (4-4-3, 15 points) arrives on the upswing after beating the New York Red Bulls and Chicago to vault back into the Eastern Conference playoff picture. It sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with potential for more by getting guys back from injury to be close to full strength.

“The idea is not to play guys out of position,” head coach Pat Noonan said. “It was a unique stretch there and, hopefully with the healthy (players) of those returning, we can get guys in more comfortable positions and have better depth, better health and better competition.”

In their most recent match last Saturday at Chicago, their star, Evander, netted his first career hat trick in a 3-2 gut-check win. Evander ranks second on the team with five goals, one behind Kevin Denkey.

Charlotte (4-5-2, 14 points) comes into Saturday night having lost its last five MLS regular-season matches. It also lost in the Round of 16 in the U.S. Open Cup last week.

After a 4-0-2 start, Charlotte FC hasn’t won since April 18 to drop to seventh in the Eastern Conference. They lost two of those MLS regular-season games by multiple goals, but their most recent match was a 1-0 loss to the New England Revolution last Saturday. It was a hard-fought effort from Charlotte, but it still did not stop its losing streak.

“I thought the players pressed extremely well,” head coach Dean Smith said. “But, we must improve on what we did, but also know that the opposition is going to play a little bit differently as well.”

Midfielder Pep Biel leads Charlotte with five goals, one of six players with multiple goals.

Charlotte leads the all-time series 4-2-2 and it swept Cincinnati last year. Cincinnati hasn’t beaten Charlotte since September 2023.

Blue Jays' Dylan Cease stifles Angels again

Dylan Cease struck out 10 in seven innings Friday night and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the visiting Los Angeles Angels A2-0.

Cease (3-1) allowed five hits with no walks in the opener of a three-game series. It was Cease’s second win of the season over the Angels and it gave the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead in the season series. He struck out 12 in five innings on April 20 in Toronto’s 5-2 win at Anaheim.

Louis Varland pitched the ninth to earn his fifth save of the season and end Toronto’s four-game losing streak.

Toronto scored both runs in the third against left-hander Reid Detmers (1-3). George Springer led off with a single, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. walked with one out and Kazuma Okamoto grounded an RBI single to center. Daulton Varsho walked and Ernie Clement hit a sacrifice fly to right.

Cease retired his first nine batters with five strikeouts before Zach Neto led off the fourth with a single, but Mike Trout grounded into a double play. Nolan Schanuel singled to second and took second on Clement’s throwing error. Jorge Soler grounded out to end the inning.

A walk and a catcher’s interference put two on with one out in the Toronto fourth. Detmers struck out Myles Straw with his 96th pitch before Jose Fermin replaced him and finished the inning on Guerrero’s lineout to shortstop.

Detmers allowed two runs, two hits and six walks while striking out three in 3 2/3 innings. He also lost to the Blue Jays on April 20.

The Angels’ first extra-base hit was Jo Adell’s double to center with two out in the seventh. Cease struck out Josh Lowe to end the inning.

Pinch hitter Vaughn Grissom led off the eighth against Jeff Hoffman with a double to left. Hoffman worked out of the inning with a groundout, a popup and a strikeout.

Former Blue Jay Alek Manoah pitched in the majors for the first time since May 29, 2024, when he worked the bottom of the eighth. He received a mixed reaction from the fans. Manoah, who had elbow surgery, tossed a perfect inning with one strikeout.
