Milan Momcilovic, No. 5 Iowa State halt No. 9 Kansas' win streak

Mandatory Credit: Reese Strickland-Imagn Images Milan Momcilovic scored 18 points and No. 5 Iowa State’s ferocious defense smothered No. 9 Kansas for a 74-56 Big 12 victory on Saturday in Ames, Iowa, to snap the Jayhawks’ eight-game winning streak.
Joshua Jefferson, Tamin Lipsey, Jamarion Batemon and Blake Buchanan added 11 points apiece for the Cyclones (22-3, 9-3 Big 12), who moved into a third-place tie with the Jayhawks (19-6, 9-3). Jefferson and Lipsey each added four assists while Buchanan grabbed six rebounds.
Iowa State made 11 of 30 (36.7%) from long range while forcing 13 turnovers and limiting Kansas to 37.2% percent shooting from the floor.
Melvin Council Jr. paced Kansas with 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Flory Bidunga had 11 points and 13 rebounds, but prized freshman Darryn Peterson was limited to a season-low 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting in 24 minutes.
Kansas went up 6-2 during a rugged start as Bidunga, Peterson and Bryson Tiller made baskets, but the home crowd came to life when Buchanan threw down a vicious slam dunk off Lipsey’s missed layup at 12:11 to knot it 6-6. Killyan Toure then sank a 24-footer to cap a 9-0 run and give Iowa State its first lead at 11:43.
Council sparked the Jayhawks by canning a trio of three-pointers and adding an alley-oop assist on Bidunga’s dunk to give the visitors a 20-16 lead at the 6:41 mark.
With his team struggling from long range, Jefferson drove past Bidunga on one possession and Peterson on another to make layups while being fouled. Jefferson completed both 3-point plays to make it 29-22 with 3:37 left in the half.
Iowa State forced 10 first-half turnovers and closed the on a 21-7 run to take a 37-27 lead into the break.
Momcilovic, who made 4 of 9 3-point attempts for the day, connected on his first two treys in the opening 90 seconds of the second half before Lipsey hit two from deep for a 49-29 lead at 17:06.
When Momcilovic cashed the Cyclones’ fifth straight 3-point attempt to start the second half, Iowa State held a 52-32 lead with 15:56 to go.
Kansas got as close as 68-56 on Council’s jumper with 4:22 left, but the Jayhawks didn’t score again as Iowa State wrapped up its sixth win in seven games.

US speed skater Jordan Stolz wins 500m, sets Olympic record
Gold medalist Jordan Stolz of the United States won the gold medal in record time on Saturda in the men’s 500m at the Milan Cortina Olympics. MILAN — American speed skating phenomenon Jordan Stolz once again stole the spotlight on Saturday, rocketing to the men’s 500 meters title at the Winter Olympics and securing his second gold medal of the Milan Cortina Games.
Stolz already had met the towering expectations by winning the men’s 1,000m on Wednesday, the United States’ first speed skating gold of the Games.
On Saturday, he topped a podium completed by Dutchman Jenning de Boo with silver and Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil with bronze.
The 21-year-old Stolz, from Wisconsin, blasted to an Olympic-record time of 33.77, finishing 0.11 seconds clear of de Boo.
Drawn in the 13th of 15 pairs and starting from the inner lane, Stolz powered off the line before unleashing the explosive top-end speed that has become his trademark.
De Boo pushed hard to keep the American within reach, clipping the barrier after crossing the line as Stolz saluted a raucous crowd heavily dominated by Dutch supporters.
Earlier, Dubreuil — racing in the 10th pair — – broke the Olympic record with a time of 34.26, before Stolz shattered it minutes later.

Report: Kevin Fiala's NHL season likely over after Olympic injury, surgery

Sylvanie-Imagn Images Kevin Fiala underwent surgery on his left leg after being removed from the ice on a stretcher Friday from Switzerland’s preliminary round game in the Milan Cortina Olympics, and ESPN reported Saturday that the injury will likely end his NHL season with the Los Angeles Kings.
The Swiss Ice Hockey Federation announced the surgery on Saturday for Fiala and said he will miss the remainder of the Olympics.
The injury occurred late in the third period of Switzerland’s 5-1 loss to Canada on Friday in a Group A preliminary round game in Milan. Fiala got his legs tangled with Canada’s Tom Wilson with just less than three minutes left in the game. Fiala was unable to get to his feet and medical personnel attended to him after a stoppage in play.
“Obviously it doesn’t look very good,” Switzerland coach Patrick Fischer said after the game. “Tough moment for Kevin and the whole team, obviously.”
Fiala, 29, has recorded 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) in 56 games this season with the Kings, who reside three points in back of the Anaheim Ducks for the final wild-card spot in the NHL’s Western Conference.
“We need that guy on my team back home, big time,” said Canada defenseman Drew Doughty, who plays for the Kings.
Another Kings’ teammate, Adrian Kempe, also lamented the loss after his Swedish team’s 5-3 win over Slovakia on Saturday.
“It’s really tough for him personally and for us as a team. You know how much he means to our team back home in L.A.,” Kempe said. “It’s just very unfortunate for him that it comes in a tournament like this that we’ve been looking forward to playing in for so long. I feel for him.”
For Fiala’s career, the 2022-23 All-Star has 229 goals and 299 assists across 707 games. He is in his 12th NHL season.

Twisted Minds recorded a 3-0 sweep of T1 on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the Overwatch Champions Series Pre-Season Bootcamp in Seoul.
Twisted Minds posted a 2-0 win on Busan, 1-0 victory on Blizzard World and 3-2 triumph on New Junk City.
They advanced to set up a semifinal encounter on Sunday versus Team Liquid, who posted a 3-1 win over Virtus.pro.
Team Liquid got the early jump on Virtus.pro by securing a 2-0 victory on Lijiang Tower and 1-0 triumph on Eichenwalde. Virtus.pro responded with a 3-0 win on New Junk City before Team Liquid ended the match with a 5-4 victory on Havana.
Sunday’s other semifinal will pit Crazy Racoon versus Team Falcons.
Crazy Raccoon seized a 3-1 win over Team Peps on Saturday. The teams split the first two maps before Crazy Raccoon notched a 3-0 win on Shambali Monastery and a 3-2 victory on Blizzard World.
Team Falcons alternated wins and losses before posting a 3-2 win over Weibo Gaming. Team Falcons recorded a 2-1 victory on Ilios, an 83.98m-53.02m win on Esperanca and 1-0 triumph on Shambali Monastery to offset 2-1 setbacks on Midtown and Havana.
Twelve teams are participating in the $25,000 event that kicks off the 2026 Overwatch Champions Series (OWCS). Teams from North America, the EMEA region, China, Japan and elsewhere in Asia were invited.
The single-elimination bracket saw teams seeded by regional and 2025 World Finals performance. All matches are first-to-three until Sunday’s grand finals, which are first-to-four.
