Micah Robinson leads way as TCU dumps Arizona State

The Horned Frogs (18-10, 8-7 Big 12) led by three points at halftime before expanding the margin to a dozen points when David Punch hit a hook shot with 11:39 to play.
TCU stretched its lead to 69-50 with 8:03 left before the Sun Devils rallied to within seven points after Maurice Odum’s 3-pointer with 1:56 remaining.
But that was a close as Arizona State would get as the Horned Frogs made 6 of 8 free throws down the stretch.
A combined 52 fouls were called in the game — 29 of those against Arizona State — that led to 63 free throws. TCU forged a 28-17 edge in made free throws in a game that was decided by 12 points.
Xavier Edmonds added 17 points for TCU, with Tanner Toolson scoring 12 points, Brock Harding racking up 10 points and 11 assists and Liutauras Lelevicius also hitting for 10 points. The Horned Frogs have won five of their past six outings to put themselves back in the discussion for an at-large NCAA berth.
Odum led all scorers with 21 points. Anthony Johnson added 18 and Massamba Diop tallied 13 for the Sun Devils (14-14, 5-10), who dropped their second straight game after upsetting then-No. 12 Texas Tech on Feb. 17.
The game went back and forth over the first seven minutes before the Sun Devils went in front on Odum’s second-chance 3-pointer. Arizona State pushed its advantage to 16-12 after Diop’s free throw with 9:31 to play in the first half.
The Horned Frogs leapfrogged back to the top at 21-20 on three-point play by Edmonds with 6:15 left in the half. They expanded the margin to six points when Robinson added a layup and free throw three minutes later before Arizona State culled its deficit to one point on Odum’s layup with 1:11 left.
A pair of free throws by Lelevicius with 46 seconds to play allowed the Horned Frogs to carry a 33-30 lead into the break.
Edmonds’ 14 points paced all scorers before halftime while Johnson’s six points paced the Sun Devils’ balanced attack over the opening 20 minutes.

Maple Leafs name John Chayka GM, Mats Sundin senior adviser

Mandatory Credit: Per Haljestam-Imagn Images The Toronto Maple Leafs hired John Chayka as their next general manager and confirmed team legend Mats Sundin will join the front office in an advisory role Sunday.
The tandem will be introduced in a press conference Monday afternoon.
“Today is an important day for the Toronto Maple Leafs organization,” Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment president and CEO Keith Pelley said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to welcome John and Mats to their roles, two great hockey minds that will strengthen our entire hockey club. From the start of this process, it’s been about building a championship-caliber team for our fans and our city and today is an important step towards that goal.”
Chayka, 36, was general manager of the Arizona Coyotes from 2016-20, the youngest GM in the NHL at the time. A native of Ontario, Chayka has not worked in the league since stepping down abruptly in July 2020 and receiving a suspension from the NHL the following year.
Chayka was found to have “breached his obligation to the club” by terminating his Coyotes’ contract with three years remaining to pursue other jobs. Later, the NHL docked two high draft picks from Arizona after learning Chayka and the club held a private scouting combine for prospects in violation of league regulations.
During his tenure with the Coyotes, they ended an eight-year playoff drought by making the postseason field during the COVID-impacted 2019-20 season.
“I’m honored to join the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and excited to work alongside Mats and the entire organization,” Chayka said in a statement. “This is one of hockey’s most historic franchises, with a passionate fan base who want to win. I’m focused on building a team that is competitive, driven and relentless — one that is in the best position to win for our fans and for the city of Toronto.”
Sundin, 55, will return Toronto and assume the title of senior executive adviser of hockey operations. The Maple Leafs said in their announcement that Sundin will “provide support across hockey operations, with a focus on team culture, player development and leadership support.”
Sundin is the Leafs’ all-time leader in points (987), a Hockey Hall of Famer and a fan favorite.
“This fan base deserves greatness and I am grateful for the opportunity to help this team, organization and city achieve that,” Sundin said in a statement. “My love for the Maple Leafs and the city of Toronto is an important part of who I am and who I will always be. I look forward to working closely with John as we both recognize the incredible opportunity and responsibility to win here in Toronto.”

Pistons complete comeback from 3-1 hole, vanquish Magic in Game 7

Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images Cade Cunningham scored 32 points and added 12 assists, and Tobias Harris contributed 30 points and nine rebounds to lead the Detroit Pistons to a 116-94 victory over the Orlando Magic on Sunday in Game 7 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series.
Daniss Jenkins came off the bench to score 16 points and Jalen Duren had 15 points and 15 rebounds for the top-seeded Pistons, who won the final three games of the series to advance in the playoffs for the first time since 2008. Detroit is the 15th team in NBA history to rally from a 3-1 deficit.
Paolo Banchero scored 38 points and had nine rebounds and Desmond Bane added 16 points for the Magic, who blew a 3-1 first-round series lead to Detroit for the second time, with the previous collapse coming in 2003.
Detroit advances to the Eastern Conference semifinals and will face either Cleveland or Toronto beginning Tuesday.
The Pistons scored 11 of the first 13 points of the third quarter, six coming from Cunningham, to take control and build a 71-51 lead. Orlando responded with a 7-0 run to cut it to 13, but Detroit pushed the advantage back to as many as 20.
Detroit built a 25-point lead with just more than eight minutes remaining in the game. The Magic responded with a 15-4 run to pull within 100-86 with 4:22 left, but the Pistons scored 16 of the final 24 points to secure the win.
Defense ruled a tightly played first quarter, with neither side able to seize control. The teams traded the lead five times and were tied on three occasions, as physical play and contested shots kept scoring in check.
There were six more lead changes in the second quarter before the Pistons closed the half on a 20-6 run to take a 60-49 lead. Detroit erupted for 40 points in the period, fueled by 17 from Harris and 10 from Cunningham, while Banchero led Orlando with 23 points in the half.

Jonah Heim, Braves pummel Rockies to sweep series, jump to 25-10

Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Jonah Heim homered, doubled and drove in a career-high-tying five runs as the Atlanta Braves completed a three-game series sweep of the Colorado Rockies with a 11-6 victory on Sunday afternoon in Denver.
Matt Olson went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI and Jorge Mateo also homered and had two hits and two RBIs for Atlanta. Three other Braves finished with two hits: Eli White (triple, RBI), Ozzie Albies (three runs, RBI) and Drake Baldwin.
The Braves, who won for the sixth time in seven games, are off to their best 35-game start (25-10) since 1892, when the franchise then known as the Boston Beaneaters started 26-9.
Aaron Bummer (1-1) picked up the win in relief. Spencer Strider made his season debut for the Braves after starting the season on the injured list with a left oblique strain and left after 3 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking five. He struck out six and left after throwing 87 pitches, just 48 for strikes.
Mickey Moniak hit two home runs and drove in three runs, Troy Johnston had two hits with two walks and a run and TJ Rumfield went 3-for-5 with a home run, two RBIs and a run for Colorado, which suffered its fourth straight loss.
Kyle Freeland (1-3) suffered the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out seven.
Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Rumfield, but Atlanta answered with three runs in the second on back-to-back homers by Heim, a 425-foot two-run blast to center, and Mateo.
Rumfield cut the lead to 3-2 in the third with a leadoff homer. The Rockies then took a 4-3 lead an inning later on a two-run homer by Moniak, driving in Jake McCarthy, who had tripled.
Atlanta regained the lead with three runs in the fifth, parlaying two hits and three walks, including one to White with the bases loaded.
Colorado cut the lead to 6-5 on a sacrifice fly by Ezequiel Tovar, but the Braves answered with two runs in the sixth, including an RBI double to the wall in left-center by Olson.
Moniak hit his second homer and 11th of the season in the eighth, a 438-foot drive to right-center, to cut the lead to 8-6. The Braves added three insurance runs in the ninth, including a two-run double by Heim, to seal the win.
