Magic set sights on another convincing win vs. Jazz

After cruising to a wire-to-wire win Thursday, Orlando will look to author another dominating performance against a sub-.500 team Saturday when the struggling Utah Jazz pay a visit.
Desmond Bane scored 23 points, Paolo Banchero had 22 and Jalen Suggs recorded his first career triple-double in the Magic’s convincing 118-98 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Suggs finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists to go along with a career-high four blocks and three steals.
“To be honest, I don’t even get into individual accomplishments and stuff like that,” Suggs said, per the Orlando Sentinel.
Said Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley of Suggs: “He was great tonight. His energy, his poise, his focus on the defensive end … It was beautiful basketball.”
So beautiful, in fact, that Suggs played a significant role in Orlando amassing a comfortable 23-point lead in the third quarter. The team put it on cruise control from there and snapped its minor two-game losing streak.
“I thought they did a great job of starting the game off holding them to 19 points in the first quarter, knowing that we set the tone with our defense and that’s what these guys did,” Mosley said. “There was a seriousness to them, a level of focus knowing what we needed to do because we’ve been with this team before and we’ve had big leads and we’ve given them away.”
The Magic, who will also host the underachieving Milwaukee Bucks on both Monday and Wednesday, shot 53.7% from the floor and enjoyed a 64-40 edge in points in the paint.
Bane capped a 32-point performance by making a layup with 0.9 seconds remaining in overtime to lift Orlando to a 128-127 victory the last time the Magic played Utah on Dec. 20.
Banchero collected 23 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in that game, and Anthony Black added 20, six and five, respectively.
Keyonte George, who recorded 27 points in that game for the Jazz, sat out his third consecutive contest Thursday with a left ankle sprain. He’s listed as questionable for the Orlando game.
Utah also played without recent trade acquisition Jaren Jackson Jr., who has yet to arrive from the Memphis Grizzlies.
The end result for the undermanned Jazz was their 17th loss in 21 games, courtesy of a 121-119 decision to the Atlanta Hawks.
Isaiah Collier followed up his 17-point, career-best 22-assist performance in Tuesday’s 131-122 win over the Indiana Pacers with a career-high 25 points and 11 assists versus the Hawks. He logged 48 minutes in both games.
“I’ve talked a lot about him playing off two feet, I think it’s allowed his decision making to be a lot cleaner,” Will Hardy said of Collier, per the Salt Lake Tribune. “Getting all the way to the rim in the half court in the NBA is hard to do. His decision-making has really improved since he started playing off two feet in the paint more. I also think that his general understanding of our team, our offense, where his moments are to be aggressive has improved as well.”
Hardy said he’s hopeful Jackson and the other players acquired in the deal will make their team debuts in Saturday’s game.

Texas-Ole Miss marks Chris Beard's first game back in Austin

The Longhorns (14-9, 5-5 SEC) have won two consecutive games and three of their past four, with the most recent victory an 84-75 decision at home over South Carolina. Dailyn Swain amassed team highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
Tramon Mark added 18 points for Texas in the win while Matas Vokietaitis and Camden Heide each had 12. The Longhorns earned a 40-25 edge on the glass and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds.
“It was great to see (Mark) step up and find his rhythm — we’re much more difficult to defend when he’s scoring as well,” Texas coach Sean Miller said. “And the other guy that’s just really playing well right now is (Heide). His ability to shoot the ball, his 3-point shots when South Carolina went to the zone, broke the game open.”
It will be the first trip back to Austin on the Ole Miss bench for Beard, who was fired at Texas in January 2023 after a domestic violence charge a month earlier.
“We expect to have a game against a really good team playing their best, prepared, and we have to be equally prepared and juiced up and ready to go and try to take advantage of our home atmosphere,” Miller said about Saturday’s game and Beard’s return.
With his Texas tenure in the rearview mirror, Beard’s focus these days is on getting his Rebels team back on track.
Ole Miss (11-11, 3-6) has dropped four straight games, most recently an 84-66 dismantling on the road by Tennessee on Tuesday. The Rebels got 15 points apiece from Patton Pinkins and AJ Storr while Ilias Kamardine added 11 and Eduardo Klafke had 10 in the loss.
Ole Miss trailed by just six points eight minutes into the second half before surrendering a run over the middle of the half that doomed its chances at a comeback.
Beard was not around at the end of the Tennessee game after being ejected with 6:15 remaining.
“All we ask for is a consistent whistle,” Beard said. “The free-throw differential in (the Tennessee) game and the foul differential is just frustrating from a coaching standpoint and a playing standpoint. At some point as a coach, you have to fight for your players.”

SMU tries to avoid slip-up against cellar-dwelling Pitt

The Mustangs (15-7, 4-5 ACC) have dropped two in a row with a loss at Louisville and a tough 84-83 setback at home to North Carolina State on Tuesday night.
The Mustangs sit 34th in the NCAA’s NET rankings, but know they need to get back on track and avoid what could be a damaging loss to Pitt (9-14, 2-8 ACC), which has also lost two in a row and has a NET ranking of 114.
Boopie Miller, SMU’s leading scorer at 19.1 points per game, scored 14 points against the Wolfpack, but his game-winning attempt in the closing seconds was blocked, sealing the Mustangs’ defeat.
“The league is certainly better this year,” SMU coach Andy Enfield said of the depth of the ACC. “More quality teams from top to bottom, meaning on a national scale, some of these teams, including SMU, won big out-of-conference games in November and early December… So every game we play now is a pretty important game for us on the regional and league scale, but also nationally.”
The Panthers, who are led by Brandin Cummings (12.5 points per game) and Cameron Corhen (12.1), find themselves in the conference’s cellar, tied with Notre Dame and Georgia Tech heading into the weekend. Pitt is looking for more consistent play that can lead to wins instead of just valiant efforts.
Lack of depth and size have hurt Pitt as well as other factors, such as poor free-throw shooting (66.1%) and turnovers. The Panthers committed 17 turnovers in their most recent loss, 67-47 at Virginia, and surrendered 13 offensive rebounds.
Pitt athletic director Allen Greene recently spoke to the media about Pitt’s disappointing season, which could foreshadow changes ahead if there’s no noticeable improvement.
“We have high expectations for our men’s basketball program, and we haven’t lived up to those expectations this year,” Greene said. “Obviously, Coach (Capel) knows that, the staff is aware of that, the players are aware of that. They want more out of what we got going on, and I know they’re working their tails off to try to fix it.”

Final Super Bowl injury report: Seahawks S Nick Emmanwori good to go

Emmanwori suffered a low ankle sprain at practice Wednesday and was held out Thursday. Seattle head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters he “fully expects” Emmanwori to play, and that was backed up by Friday’s injury report listing with Emmanwori without a game status.
Only one Seahawk is questionable, fullback Robbie Ouzts (neck).
Quarterback Sam Darnold (oblique) and left tackle Charles Cross (foot) were among the other key Seahawks who had been dealing with injuries late in the season. Both Darnold and Cross were limited on Wednesday but increased to full participants by Friday, with neither warranting a game designation.
The Patriots deemed three players questionable: defensive lineman Joshua Farmer (hamstring) and linebackers Harold Landry (knee) and Robert Spillane (ankle).
Farmer, a rookie, practiced in full all week but has been on injured reserve since the Dec. 21 game at Baltimore. Landry (8.5 sacks in regular season) missed the AFC Championship Game win over Denver but could return.
Like his Seattle counterpart, New England quarterback Drake Maye has also been practicing through a minor injury to his right (throwing) shoulder but was a full participant every day.
