Lucas Glover and Zac Blair share the first-round lead at the John Deere Classic after posting bogey-free, 8-under 63s on Thursday in Silvis, Ill.

Zach Johnson, Lee Hodges and German Stephan Jaeger are one stroke behind the co-leaders after one trip around TPC Deere Run. Davis Riley used a hole-in-one and an eagle on consecutive holes to shoot a 6-under 65, where he’s tied with Ben Kohles and Patrick Fishburn.

Glover, 46, birdied seven of his first 11 holes before cooling down the rest of the way. The 2009 U.S. Open champion won the John Deere in 2021 and has collected three of his six PGA Tour titles in this decade.

Blair, meanwhile, is searching for his first PGA Tour victory. The 35-year-old started his day on the back nine, then went birdie-eagle at Nos. 1-2 for a boost. He led the field in strokes gained on approach.

Johnson’s eagle-birdie finish pushed him near the top of the leaderboard and all but ensured he will make the cut at the John Deere for an incredible 18th year in a row. The native of nearby Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has played the event every year since 2002 and skipped the U.S. Senior Open this week to keep that streak going.

Riley stood at 2 under for his round before sinking the first hole-in-one of his PGA Tour career at the par-3, 150-yard 16th hole. His shot landed just behind the pin and slowly spun back to the cup. He followed that up with an 18 1/2-foot eagle putt at the par-5 17th.

Defending champion Brian Campbell and two-time John Deere winner Jordan Spieth opened with 1-under 70s.

Veteran right-handed pitchers Joe Ross and Chris Paddack and outfielder Jarred Kelenic all rejected outright assignments by the Texas Rangers and became free agents on Thursday.

Paddack spent less than four days with the club. He signed on Monday and appeared that night in a bulk relief role against the Cleveland Guardians. After spreading two runs and seven hits over four innings, Paddack was designated for assignment the next day before passing through waivers.

Paddack, 30, has already spent time with the Miami Marlins, Cincinnati Reds and Rangers this season. He is 0-7 with a 6.79 ERA in 14 games (nine starts).

Ross, 33, got into five games for Texas and allowed four earned runs over eight innings (4.50 ERA) with one loss. He started the season with the Arizona Diamondbacks and has a 9.26 ERA in eight total relief appearances (11 2/3 innings).

Kelenic, 26, also didn’t last long with his second team of the season and the fourth of his MLB career. A former top prospect for the New York Mets and Seattle Mariners, Kelenic began this year with the Chicago White Sox and was granted free agency at the end of May. He soon signed with Texas and only played in seven games, batting 1-for-8.

In other moves, the Rangers selected the contract of right-hander Ben Peoples from Triple-A Round Rock, optioned right-hander Winston Santos to Round Rock and transferred left-hander Jordan Montgomery’s rehab assignment from Double-A Frisco to Triple-A.

The Rangers acquired Peoples, 25, from the White Sox for catcher Ben Hartl this week and could make his major league debut with Texas. He was 5-1 with a 2.39 ERA in 29 relief appearances for Triple-A Charlotte, striking out 45 with 21 walks.

Santos, 24, made his MLB debut Wednesday and allowed two runs on two hits in two innings of relief in a 9-4 loss at Cleveland.

The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled right-handed relief pitcher Paul Gervase from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Thursday for his third stint with the team this season.

Gervase, 26, has a 1.80 ERA and five strikeouts across five innings in two appearances for the Dodgers this season.

He has a career 3.38 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings across eight major league appearances. In Triple-A in 2026, Gervase is 2-0 with a 3.60 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 25 innings across 19 games.

In a corresponding move, the Dodgers optioned left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes to Triple-A. Barnes, 30, was called up Wednesday and took down the bulk of the innings in a planned bullpen game, which the Dodgers lost 7-1 to the A’s in Sacramento. Barnes allowed seven runs on 12 hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and two walks.

He has a 0-1 record with a 7.00 ERA in nine innings across three relief appearances for the Dodgers this season. He has played 13 games in parts of two seasons with the Minnesota Twins (2021), Chicago Cubs (2026) and Dodgers (2026), compiling a career 0-4 record with a 6.30 ERA in 50 innings.

Mickey Moniak singled, doubled, homered and drove in four runs to help the Colorado Rockies earn a four-game split against the Miami Marlins with a 14-4 win in the finale of their four-game series on Thursday afternoon in Denver.

Jake McCarthy also homered for Colorado, which has won two in a row.

Colorado’s Michael Lorenzen allowed four runs and four hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked six.

Marlins starter Ryan Gusto (0-3) went three innings, allowing three runs and four hits while striking out two and walked two.

The Marlins pressured Lorenzen early, getting an infield single from Liam Hicks to start the first and a double to center by Otto Lopez.

Kyle Stowers walked to load the bases and Miami then scored twice without the benefit of a hit. Hicks came home on a ground out by Xavier Edwards for a 1-0 lead, and Lopez scored on a fly out by Owen Caissie to make it 2-0.

Moniak came up in his half of the first and homered to right, his third against the Marlins this season, cutting it to 2-1. He’s also the first Colorado player in team history to homer in the first inning in three straight games.

Lopez tripled off the base of the wall on the first pitch of the third and came home on a sacrifice fly to left-center by Edwards for a 3-1 lead.

Jake McCarthy walked to start the bottom half of the third for the Rockies and Moniak lined a double down the right-field line to put runners on second and third with no outs.

Willi Castro came up with one out and lined a hard single up the middle to plate two runs and tie it 3-3.

Miami took a 4-3 lead on a ground out in the fourth, but Colorado moved back ahead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on McCarthy’s home run.

The Rockies then blew the game open with seven runs in the sixth and then tacked on two more in the eighth for a 14-4 lead.
