Knicks look to limit SGA in rematch vs. Thunder

The last time the New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder squared off, Knicks coach Mike Brown had some things to say about Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander after the game.

“SGA, he’s a tough cover, and he does a great job of convincing the referees — probably better than anyone in the league — that he’s getting hit,” Brown said after Oklahoma City’s 103-100 win March 4.

Sunday, Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder take on the Knicks at home in a key game for both teams in the playoff race.

In that earlier meeting in New York, Brown was assessed a technical foul late in the first quarter after he felt Gilgeous-Alexander should’ve been called for a foul as Jalen Brunson defended him.

That would’ve been the third foul on Gilgeous-Alexander, who ultimately finished with 26 points and picked up just one more foul the rest of the way.

Sunday’s game is the second in a four-game road trip for the Knicks, who fell 114-103 in Charlotte on Thursday to snap a seven-game winning streak.

New York (48-26) comes into Sunday’s matchup 1.5 games behind Boston for the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference and two games ahead of Cleveland for the No. 3 spot.

Late in Thursday’s loss, Brown went with Mitchell Robinson on the floor instead of Karl-Anthony Towns.

“The guys are starting to trust me a lot more,” Robinson said. “They’re putting trust in me, so I’m telling them what I see and things that I think we can get better at. Being more vocal, it’s coming naturally.”

The Thunder (58-16) are coming off an 18-point win over Chicago on Friday, their 13th win in 14 games.

But Oklahoma City has needed to keep on a roll to try to hold off surging San Antonio for the No. 1 overall spot in the Western Conference.

Oklahoma City guard Jalen Williams has missed 45 games due to various injuries this season, but he is starting to find some sense of a rhythm three games after returning to the lineup from another extended absence.

Williams had 18 points, eight assists, and six rebounds in Friday’s win.

“That was nice getting back to how I usually play,” Williams said. “That was a good — a really big — step forward.”

As one of the primary ballhandlers alongside Gilgeous-Alexander, Williams’s progress affects the rest of the team offensively as well.

“They have to focus on him. When he’s being aggressive, getting downhill like that, it opens everything else up,” Isaiah Joe said.

Joe added: “He’s a hell of a player, and he’s getting his legs back, and he’s looking good.”

The Knicks have been without Landry Shamet for three games with a right knee injury, and though Shamet doesn’t appear close to returning, Miles McBride does appear to be nearing a return.

McBride hasn’t played since Jan. 27 due to a sports hernia but has recently returned to practice and could return as soon as Sunday.

Oklahoma City was without All-Star Chet Holmgren (right hip contusion) in Friday’s win.

Rookies Ryan Ward and Alex Freeland each hit home runs in the fourth inning and the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled away for a 9-1 victory over the visiting Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto had a season-high 10 strikeouts over 5 1/3 scoreless innings as the Dodgers rebounded from a loss on Saturday to improve to 14-3 since May 13. Max Muncy also hit a home run for Los Angeles.

Ward’s home run was the first of his career in his third major league game, which was also his home debut.

Bryson Stott hit a home run as the Phillies lost two of three at Los Angeles following a three-game sweep at San Diego. Rookie right-hander Andrew Painter (1-6) was tagged for four runs on seven hits in a season-low 3 1/3 innings.

Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto departed the game in the fourth inning, one inning after he was hit in the left wrist by a 97-mph fastball from Yamamoto.

Freeland, who was recalled last week, gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double. Los Angeles made it 2-0 in the third on an RBI single from Kyle Tucker that hit off the first-base bag and hopped into right field.

Ward’s home run, to the back of the Phillies’ bullpen in right field, came as the leadoff hitter in the fourth. The 28-year-old, who has 156 minor league home runs in seven seasons, made his long-awaited major league debut April 19 and was recalled again Friday.

Two batters after Ward went deep, Freeland also hit a home run to right field for a 4-0 lead, his third.

The Phillies had runners on second and third with one out against Yamamoto in fifth, but Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner struck out. The Dodgers made it 6-0 in their half of the fifth on a pinch-hit single from Alex Call, who was hitting for Ward.

Freddie Freeman had a pair of late sacrifice flies and Muncy hit a solo shot, his 14th homer this season, in the seventh.

Stott hit his home run to lead off the ninth.

Mariners pull out 10-inning win to sweep Diamondbacks

Victor Robles’ infield single brought home the deciding run with one out in the 10th inning as the Seattle Mariners defeated the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 Sunday afternoon to sweep the three-game interleague series.

Cole Young and Dominic Canzone hit solo homers for the American League West-leading Mariners, who won their sixth consecutive game.

Luis Castillo (2-5) pitched five innings of two-hit relief to earn the victory.

With automatic runner Randy Arozarena at second base, Diamondbacks reliever Jonathan Loaisiga (1-2) intentionally walked Luke Raley. Young dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Robles hit a grounder up the middle that shortstop Geraldo Perdomo smothered with a diving attempt, but he was unable to throw out the speedy Robles.

The Mariners opened the scoring in the second as Young led off by hitting a fastball that stayed just inside the right field foul pole. Seattle threatened to add to its lead as Jhonny Pereda and Colt Emerson singled and J.P. Crawford walked to load the bases with one out. Julio Rodriguez hit a liner to center fielder Ryan Waldschmidt and he easily threw out Pereda, a slow-footed catcher, at the plate for an inning-ending double play.

Mariners starter Bryce Miller allowed one hit — a one-out single by Ildemaro Vargas in the second — with one walk and six strikeouts over five scoreless frames but was pulled after 71 pitches as he was working as part of a piggyback with Castillo.

That backfired immediately as the Diamondbacks tied it in the sixth. Ketel Marte drew a one-out walk and advanced to third on a double to center by Corbin Carroll. Marte was thrown out at the plate by shortstop Crawford on a grounder by Perdomo, but Carroll took third on the play and then scored on a wild pitch.

Canzone put the Mariners back out front as he led off the bottom of the inning with a blast that grazed the inside of the right field foul pole.

Arizona tied it 2-2 in the eighth after pinch hitter Gabriel Moreno led off with a bloop single down the right field line. Tim Tawa dropped a sacrifice bunt down the first base line, with Josh Naylor’s errant throw to second sailing into center field, putting runners at second and third. Marte followed with a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Moreno. After Carroll grounded out, Perdomo hit a liner that appeared headed for right field, but second baseman Young made a leaping catch to keep the score even.

Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: 'I failed at my goal'

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander repeated as NBA Most Valuable Player and is the consensus best player in the sport with only three-time MVP Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets able to make a reasonable case.

But the Oklahoma City star described the 2025-26 season as a failure on Sunday, one day after the Thunder lost to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals to end their chance at winning consecutive NBA titles. The Spurs advance to play the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals while Gilgeous-Alexander begins his offseason earlier than expected.

“I failed at my goal,” Gilgeous-Alexander said during his exit-day press conference. “I didn’t achieve what I wanted to achieve. But I learn the most about myself and make the greatest amount of increases in my career when I fail and don’t get what I want. I look at this no different. I didn’t get where I wanted to go this season. There’s a reason for that. Now I have to look at that reason and try to make sure it never happens again.”

The Thunder looked like a good bet to return to the NBA Finals for most of the season.

Oklahoma City started off 24-1 and also put together a late-season 19-1 spurt toward the end of the 64-18 campaign. The Thunder then won eight straight games to start the postseason before running into troubles against the Spurs.

Still, Oklahoma City held a 3-2 series lead before being smoked 118-91 in San Antonio in Game 6. The Spurs also outplayed the host Thunder in Game 7, prevailing 111-103.

Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 25.9 points in the series, including three games of 30 or more, but shot just 40.9% from the field, well off his stellar 55.3 rate in the regular season. He averaged 31.1 points during the regular season.

Gilgeous-Alexander shot less than 37% four times during a series in which Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was a constant obstacle.

“There’s a guy on their back line that is a little bit different,” Gilgeous-Alexander said of Wembanyama. “They funnel everything to him. … It’s a really good defense. But it’s not impossible to score. I just think it’s very different.”

The Thunder were hurt by not having fellow star Jalen Williams for Game 7 due to a left hamstring injury. He played in just three games in the series and five in the postseason due to the injury.

Williams feels that series would have gone differently if he had been healthy.

“Obviously I think I could have made an impact,” Williams said. “I think we could have won if I played. Went to seven with them without me playing. I don’t think I make us worse. That’s really my answer to that. But it’s also hats off to them. What do you want them to do about me being hurt?”

Ajay Mitchell, who filled in well for Williams, missed the final four games after sustaining a right calf strain. His absence also hurt badly.

One player getting heat over the Oklahoma City collapse is big man Chet Holmgren, who was badly outplayed by the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama. He averaged just 10.7 points in the series and was virtually non-existent in Game 7 with four points on 1-of-2 shooting and four rebounds in 33 minutes.

“I feel like part of it was being kind of closed out heavy,” Holmgren said. “Then also kind of just being a little bit out of rhythm sometimes. I feel like there were definitely opportunities to get more attempts up that I didn’t in the moment. That’s an area to improve.”

Wembanyama averaged 27.3 points, 10.9 rebounds and 2.7 blocks in the series for San Antonio.
