Jamie Foxx Finally Reveals Details Of Near-Death Experience In His New Netflix Special

If you’ve been keeping up with Hollywood news, you may recall the headline-grabbing tale of Jamie Foxx suffering a near-fatal medical issue back in April of 2023. The mystery illness was never officially explained by Foxx in interviews or social media posts, though the actor reportedly spent over a month recovering from the diagnosis in an Atlanta hospital, prompting questions and concerns from fans around the globe. Now, Jamie Foxx is finally prepared to break his silence on the harrowing affair in the form of a Netflix stand-up comedy special titled What Had Happened Was…
What Had Happened Was…
Fans won’t have to wait very long for the Jamie Foxx Netflix special, as the live event has already been shot, and is currently slated for release on December 10. Foxx has promised to explain his health issues in detail throughout the special in his classic comedic fashion, harkening back to his roots on the stand-up stage. As the multi-hyphenate explains in the teaser trailer for the Netflix special event, the key to his recovery was humor, meaning this is the perfect medium to finally open up about the entire ordeal.
Though many fans are excited to hear Jamie Foxx outline his medical mystery, others are quite surprised by his choice to launch a Netflix special. Foxx has not taken to the stage for a full-length live show since 2003’s Jamie Foxx Unleashed: Lost, Stolen and Leaked, which saw him delivering some of his most iconic impressions, observations, and personal tales from a stage in Dallas, Texas. But, as many stand-up comedy aficionados are aware, sometimes comedy is the best lens to describe something truly painful.
Comedy As An Outlet

Tig Notaro famously outlined her battles with breast cancer through her stand-up platform, while other comedians such as Hannah Gadsby, Marc Maron, and Chris Hardwick have used comedy to work through personal issues including gender identity, eating disorders, and loss of loved ones.
In the case of Jamie Foxx, his Netflix special will begin with a story of him experiencing a bad headache, before waking up in the hospital nearly 3 weeks later with no memory of his recovery. What happened in between his headache and his discharge from the Atlanta medical center needed to be filled in for him by loved ones such as his daughter, who never left his side throughout the harrowing ordeal.
Up Next For Jamie Foxx
If you’re a massive Jamie Foxx fan, you’ve certainly got a lot to look forward to in the coming months, as his Netflix special is not the only new project he’s got coming around the bend. Foxx is also on pace to star in the action comedy film Back In Action alongside Cameron Diaz, which will be released on January 17. The film, which is also a Netflix production, was dead in the middle of filming when Foxx underwent his medical emergency, and halted production for several months to allow him to recover.
Even if you’re not a major stand-up comedy fan, it may be worth tuning into Jamie Foxx’s Netflix special just to satiate your curiosity surrounding the actor’s medical mystery. Who knows, maybe the performance will be so funny that you become a bonafide stand-up super-fan.
