Hurricanes finish off Canadiens in Game 5, will face Vegas in Stanley Cup Final
May 29, 2026; Raleigh, North Carolina, USA; Carolina Hurricanes left wing Eric Robinson (50) reacts after scoring an even strength goal against Montreal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes (75) in game five of the Eastern Conference Final of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs during the first period during the first period at Lenovo Center. Mandatory Credit: James Guillory-Imagn Images Taylor Hall and Logan Stankoven each posted one-goal, two-assist performances to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Friday in Raleigh, N.C., that sends them to the Stanley Cup Final.
Jackson Blake and Seth Jarvis both scored once and added an assist, while Eric Robinson and Shayne Gostisbehere added singles for Carolina, which claimed the Eastern Conference finals in five games.
Goaltender Frederik Andersen made 23 saves.
The Hurricanes will face the Vegas Golden Knights in the Stanley Cup Final, which begins on Tuesday in Raleigh. Vegas swept the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference finals.
The Golden Knights won the two meetings this season, both taking place in the opening month.
Cole Caufield replied for the Canadiens, who won the series opener but became overmatched by the more veteran Hurricanes as the series continued.
Goalie Jakub Dobes stopped 23 shots.
The Hurricanes have lost only one game en route to reaching the final for the first time since they won the Stanley Cup in 2006. They are the first team to start the playoffs with a 12-1 mark since the 1976 Canadiens.
Just like in Game 4, the hosts used a three-goal first period to springboard to victory.
Hall opened the scoring just past the midway point of the opening frame when he pounced on a rebound opportunity created by Stankoven’s rush to the net.
Stankoven doubled the lead six minutes later when he rifled a top-corner shot from the right faceoff dot for his team-leading ninth tally.
Robinson capped the dominant period by converting a breakaway chance at the 16:52 mark for his third goal of the series.
The Hurricanes did not let up after the intermission. Blake made it a four-goal edge at 7:19 of the second period when he buried a rebound after Stankoven was denied on a breakaway chance.
Gostisbehere’s power-play goal with 1:58 remaining in the middle frame — he slid home an opportunity from the doorstep — made it a 5-0 affair.
Caufield spoiled Andersen’s bid for a second consecutive shutout when he notched a power-play goal with 9:10 remaining in regulation.
Jarvis rounded out the scoring with an empty-net goal.

Miguel Vargas cracks walk-off HR as White Sox stun Tigers in 10th
May 29, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago White Sox third baseman Miguel Vargas (20) runs after hitting an RBI double against the Detroit Tigers during the third inning at Rate Field. Mandatory Credit: Patrick Gorski-Imagn Images Miguel Vargas smacked a game-ending two-run home run against Drew Anderson in the 10th inning to propel the host Chicago White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
Chicago, which lost slugging first baseman Munetaka Murakami to hamstring tightness in the third inning, has won three straight and four of five. The Tigers have lost three in a row and 11 of 13.
Stymied by Tigers starter Troy Melton for much of the night, the White Sox forced extra innings with aggressive baserunning in the ninth.
With men on the corners and one out, Rikuu Nishida bunted in front of the mound. Pitcher Kyle Finnegan briefly looked at Andrew Benintendi a third of the way down the third base line, then threw for the out at first. Benintendi charged toward the plate and first baseman Spencer Torkelson’s throw home was well up the line, which allowed Benintendi to score on the error.
Anderson (2-2) yielded the fourth walk-off home run against the Tigers this season as Vargas crushed a two-out changeup that hung over the heart of the plate. Winner Bryan Hudson (3-1) allowed an unearned run in the 10th on a Zack Short sacrifice fly.
Riley Greene singled twice for the Tigers, who were outhit 10-4.
Murakami went 0-for-2 with a strikeout before leaving the game in the third inning with right hamstring tightness. He sustained the injury while racing to first base to avoid a 4-6-3 double play. Sox manager Will Venable said after the game that Murakami is expected to miss “a couple weeks.”
Murakami entered the weekend with 20 home runs, tied for tops in the American League.
Dillon Dingler delivered his 11th home run of the season with two out in the third, connecting for a two-run blast against White Sox right-hander Erick Fedde. The ball just cleared the wall and the leaping attempt by left fielder Sam Antonacci.
Fedde scattered two runs and four hits in four innings. He walked three and struck out three while surrendering a home run for the sixth straight outing.
Melton spaced one run and six hits in seven innings with one walk and one strikeout. He threw 57 of his 89 pitches for strikes.
Tristan Peters, Antonacci and Vargas collected two hits apiece for the White Sox, who had four doubles. Vargas produced the team’s first run with an RBI double in the third.
After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth, Detroit managed just two baserunners until Matt Vierling became the automatic runner on second to open the 10th.

MJ Melendez, Mets walk off Marlins
May 29, 2026; New York City, New York, USA; New York Mets first baseman Mark Vientos (27) reacts to hitting a home run against the Miami Marlins during the third inning at Citi Field. Mandatory Credit: Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images MJ Melendez hit the first walk-off homer of his career Friday night, when the New York Mets squandered a trio of four-run leads before outlasting the Miami Marlins, 9-7, in the opener of a three-game series between the National League East foes.
Pete Fairbanks (2-3) retired Juan Soto on a fly out to center before Melendez, who lofted a sacrifice fly as a pinch-hitter for Jared Young in the seventh, hit a long arcing homer into the second deck in right field.
The hit was just the sixth in 46 at-bats this month for Melendez, who stared at the home dugout and spiked his bat after his homer landed.
Austin Warren (1-1) threw a perfect 10th inning to strand automatic runner Jakob Marsee at third.
The win was the second straight for the Mets following a six-game losing streak. The Marlins have dropped three in a row.
A.J. Ewing and Brett Baty had two-run singles in the first for the Mets, who took four-run leads at 5-1 on Mark Vientos’ homer in the third and at 6-2 when Marcus Semien scored on a throwing error by Marlins catcher Joe Mack in the fourth.
Ewing finished with two hits,
Owen Caissie hit a game-tying two-run homer in the eighth for the Marlins. Xavier Edwards began the comeback with a third-inning RBI triple and Marsee had an RBI double in the fourth. Miami scored twice in the fifth, when Mark Vientos misplayed Otto Lopez’s grounder as Mack scored before Lopez raced home on Kyle Stowers’ double.
Lopez had a sacrifice fly in the seventh.
Stowers finished with three hits while Edwards, Marsee and Caissie had two hits apiece.
Mets starter Freddy Peralta allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over 4 2/3 innings. The Marlins’ Max Meyer gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits and three walks while striking out six over six innings.

Athletics RHP Luis Severino exits after 1 inning with injury
May 29, 2026; West Sacramento, California, USA; Athletics pitcher Luis Severino (40) follows through on a pitch against the New York Yankees in the first inning at Sutter Health Park. Mandatory Credit: Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Right-hander Luis Severino exited the Athletics’ Friday game against the New York Yankees in West Sacramento, Calif., before the top of the second inning due to an undisclosed injury.
Severino, 32, was warming up when he suddenly walked to the back of the mound and looked toward the dugout, prompting catcher Shea Langeliers to signal to the dugout. Severino left the game following a brief discussion with a trainer and manager Mark Kotsay.
He was replaced by left-hander Jose Suarez.
Severino was initially scheduled to start against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday, but his start was pushed back. The initial reasoning was that the A’s wanted left-handers to start against the Mariners.
Severino gave up four runs — all unearned — in the first inning due to a throwing error by first baseman Nick Kurtz. Aaron Judge had an RBI single, and Paul Goldschmidt drilled a three-run homer.
Severino pitched for the Yankees from 2015-23, and the right-hander had been treated rudely by his former teammates entering Friday, compiling an 0-2 record and a 10.66 ERA in three starts. He is in his second season with the Athletics after spending 2024 with the New York Mets.
Through 12 starts this year, Severino has a 4.16 ERA.
