Hurricanes blow lead, come back to edge Senators

Brandon Bussi made 22 saves, including strong work down the stretch, to boost his record to 22-3-1 as a rookie. The Hurricanes, whose points streak increased to a season-best nine games (7-0-2), saw a two-goal lead vanish. However, they recovered on Staal’s 14th goal of the season when the Senators were slow to respond on a line change.
Stephen Halliday, Tim Stutzle and Jake Sanderson, who also had an assist, scored for the Senators, who fell short of notching their first five-game winning streak of the season. Nick Cozens provided two assists. James Reimer, a former Carolina goalie (2019-21), made 14 saves in defeat.
The Hurricanes, competing in their final home game prior to the Olympic break, managed only two shots on goal in the third period.
Jarvis scored twice in a span of 3 minute, 2 seconds in the second period as the Hurricanes built a 3-1 lead.
But 40 seconds after his second goal, Stutzle posted a power-play goal. Then Sanderson pulled the Senators even on a power-play goal 4:57 into the third period.
It marked the third time in a six-day span that the Hurricanes didn’t protect a multiple-goal lead, but they’ve recovered to win two of those.
Halliday tipped in a Jordan Spence shot for the game’s first goal 2:46 into the game.
Jarvis boosted his goals total to 25. Aho has a three-game goals streak and he became Carolina’s third player to reach the 20-goal mark this season. Staal, the captain, has surpassed his goal total of last season.

LeBron, Durant, Curry team up as three NBA All-Star rosters revealed

The rosters for the Feb. 15 game in Inglewood, Calif., were revealed Tuesday, and the “USA Stripes” squad will have the veteran trio of James, Durant and Curry, with a combined 50 All-Star appearances among them.
They’ll be joined on a star-powered roster by Jaylen Brown, Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell, Norman Powell, and Kawhi Leonard — the latter a late addition to the player pool Tuesday before the rosters were confirmed.
Because Giannis Antetokounmpo will miss the game due to his calf strain, the World team was short a player to reach the required eight. Karl-Anthony Towns, who was born in New Jersey but represents the Dominican Republic internationally, was moved from the American player pool to Team World, and Leonard was added by commissioner Adam Silver.
The “USA Stars” have a much younger group with Anthony Edwards, Cade Cunningham and Devin Booker. First-time All-Stars Jalen Duren, Jalen Johnson, and Chet Holmgren also made the team.
Under the new format, USA Stars, USA Stripes and Team World will play a round-robin of 12-minute games, with the teams having the best records advancing to the championship game. If all teams go 1-1 in the round robin, point differential will serve as the tiebreaker.

Reports: Diamondbacks signing veteran 1B Carlos Santana

Rebilas-Imagn Images The Arizona Diamondbacks are signing free agent first baseman Carlos Santana to a one-year, $2 million contract, according to multiple reports on Tuesday.
Santana, who turns 40 on April 8, is a switch-hitter giving the Diamondbacks an option at first base with left-handed-hitting Pavin Smith, who turns 30 on Friday.
Santana batted a combined .219 with 11 home runs and 54 RBIs in 2025 after splitting time between Cleveland (116 games) and the Chicago Cubs (eight), who signed him on Sept. 1 after the Guardians released him four days earlier. He started 92 games at first base and 18 at designated hitter with one appearance at third base.
An All-Star first baseman with Cleveland in 2019, Santana won a Silver Slugger Award that season and the Gold Glove for American League first basemen with the Minnesota Twins in 2024.
Santana is batting .241 for his career with 335 homers, 1,136 RBIs, a .352 on-base percentage and a .425 slugging percentage in 2,204 regular-season games for Cleveland (2010-17, 2019-20, 2025), the Philadelphia Phillies (2018), Kansas City Royals (2021-22), Seattle Mariners (2022), Pittsburgh Pirates (2023), Milwaukee Brewers (2023), Twins (2024) and Cubs (2025).
He also batted .205 with five homers and 13 RBIs in 30 playoff games.
