Health concerns hit as Raiders, Browns eye improved QB play

When the Cleveland Browns go on the road to meet the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, a pair of starting quarterbacks return to their posts after Week 3 performances opened the door for doubt.

Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew was benched for the final drive in a 36-22 home loss to the Carolina Panthers after throwing an interception in the fourth quarter. Aidan O’Connell took over and orchestrated a late 13-play, 70-yard touchdown drive.

Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is down three starting offensive linemen this week. Cleveland’s revamped offense is limping to Las Vegas. Watson absorbed eight sacks during a 21-15 loss to the visiting New York Giants last week.

While Watson came out of the game fine physically, although the rough afternoon could bring about trust issues.

At the outset Sunday, it’s Minshew and the Raiders (1-2) against Watson and the Browns (1-2). Who else takes the field is up in the air.

“There’s no issue. Gardner Minshew is the quarterback,” Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce said this week.

Yet, it isn’t as if the Raiders are issue free. The Panthers handled the Raiders’ offensive and defensive lines in Week 3, with a frustrated Pierce saying afterward, when asked about the team’s effort: “… There were definitely some players that made business decisions.”

Top wide receiver Davante Adams (tied for the team lead with 18 receptions) was ruled out with a hamstring injury. The Raiders’ top defensive playmaker, pass rusher Maxx Crosby, is also out due to a left ankle injury that bothered him since Week 2.

The Raiders gave up 437 yards, including 306 passing, and allowed four touchdowns to a Carolina that was in the midst of a change from Bryce Young to Andy Dalton at quarterback. Crosby played well on a high ankle sprain, but his teammates failed to follow his lead. This week, they’ll need a new energizer to emerge.

“At 80 percent, (Crosby is) a lot better than any defensive end in the National Football League,” said Pierce.

Adams started the first three games and has 18 receptions for 209 yards and one touchdown. Rookie tight end Brock Bowers, the team’s co-leader in receptions, could become the primary target this week.

There is already a large target on Watson’s back.

With the offensive line in flux all around him, the Browns are on the road without Pro Bowl right guard Wyatt Teller (knee), starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. (knee) and right tackle Jack Conklin. Conklin was “close” to making his 2024 debut but had what coach Kevin Stefanski said was a “minor setback” with a hamstring injury.

Watson went 21 of 37 for 196 yards with two touchdowns in the loss to the Giants as the Browns finished with just 217 total yards. Watson’s eight sacks cost Cleveland 48 yards, while the Browns also lost two fumbles. He has been sacked an NFL-worst 16 times and pressured more than any quarterback in the league (42) this season.

“When you’re talking about protection, it’s everybody,” Stefanski said. “… Everybody has a job to do in order to keep the quarterback clean. So, I got to do my part (as coach). It’s no secret we can’t let him get hit that many times. That’s not good enough and that will get fixed.”

The Browns are 31st in the 32-team NFL in total offense at 248.0 yards per game and 30th in passing at 152.3 yards per game. They have scored just 16.7 points per contest.

On defense, Pro Bowl defensive end Myles Garrett has been playing through foot, thigh and Achilles injuries, yet still has been good enough to record two sacks. forcing a fumble on both. Cleveland is 12th in total defense at 309.3 yards allowed per game. But Garrett said he will play this week and rest .

“He’s a warrior. He’s going to go out there and give it everything he has,” Browns defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “Anything he’s able to do, he’s going to go out there and do it and when he’s on the field for us, he provides a big boost.”

Browns tight end David Njoku (ankle) will not play Sunday, missing his third consecutive game.

After meaty showing, Rangers' Jake Burger sets sights on M's

It was Burger Night at Globe Life Field.

No, there weren’t any specials at the concession stands. Just the Texas Rangers’ Jake Burger taking a bite out of the defending American League West champion Seattle Mariners.

Burger belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning and added a tiebreaking single in the sixth as the Rangers recorded a 5-4 victory over the visiting Mariners on Friday in the opener of a four-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Wyatt Langford also went deep for Texas, which extended its division lead to 1 1/2 games over the Mariners.

Saturday is scheduled to feature a matchup of right-handers in the Mariners’ Bryan Woo (7-6, 4.16 ERA) against the Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi (9-8, 4.21).

Burger, who struck out with two runners on base to end an inning in a 4-2 loss Wednesday to the Chicago White Sox, was looking to atone.

“I felt like I let the team down a little bit on Wednesday at kind of pivotal time,” Burger said. “I’m going to go out there and give it my all every single day. But today was kind of like: ‘Hey, this is setting the tone for the rest of the year. So, stop feeling sorry for yourself. It’s time to go out there and compete.”

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker certainly appreciated it.

“He’s had a lot of clutch hits this year,” Schumaker said of Burger, who leads the team with 18 homers and 64 RBIs. “The home run was huge, but then they bring in a reliever (Eduard Bazardo) who gets it on the ground a lot and (Burger) gets it through the middle. He used the whole field. What can I say? Jake Burger is a winning player. He really is.”

The Mariners, who have scored the second fewest runs in the major leagues, finished with 10 hits a day after firing assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes. They were 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven on base.

“When you’re just not getting the results you want as a team, it’s very frustrating. I think everybody can sense that,” said Mariners right fielder Dominic Canzone, who had a two-run double in the fifth inning that tied the score at 3-all. “All we can do is keep grinding. We’re trying to figure out the answers, and they’re not always right in front of you. So just try to come back tomorrow and bring the fight again.”

Woo is 1-0 over his past three starts. He didn’t get a decision last Saturday against the visiting San Francisco Giants despite a quality start of two earned runs in six innings as it took 10 frames for Seattle to prevail 4-3.

Woo has struggled mightily on the road this season, going 1-6 with a 6.28 ERA.

He is 3-3 with a 3.88 ERA in nine career starts against the Rangers, including 1-1 this season. He lost 3-0 on April 8 in Arlington, despite giving up one earned run (three overall) over five innings. He beat the Rangers 5-2 on April 19 in Seattle with seven strong innings.

Eovaldi is coming off an 8-5 loss Sunday at Atlanta in which he allowed four runs in as many innings.

He’s 3-5 with a 5.16 ERA in 15 career starts against Seattle, including 1-1 this season. Eovaldi beat the Mariners 3-2 at home on April 7 with six quality innings and lost 7-3 in Seattle on April 18, when he gave up four runs (two earned) over five innings.

Dodgers sail along with MLB's best record; Mets could face another setback

Having clinched a winning road trip with a victory on Friday in New York, the Los Angeles Dodgers can win yet another series when they face the Mets on Saturday.

The two-time defending World Series champions own the best record in Major League Baseball at 66-38. The Dodgers, who lost five of seven heading into the All-Star break, have taken five of seven since play resumed after defeating the Mets 4-2 in the series opener.

As for the Mets, they may have more bad news from the Friday game than just their third loss in four games.

All-Star Juan Soto, who leads the National League in on-base percentage (.408) and on-base-plus slugging percentage (.947), could miss some time after leaving the game early due to left calf soreness. New York kept him out of the game on Wednesday in hopes that having two days off would alleviate that issue.

Soto was scheduled for an MRI and likely will be out of the lineup on Saturday in a contest that will pit Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-6, 2.78 ERA) against Mets rookie Nolan McLean (7-6, 3.34). It will be an encore of the teams’ April 14 game in Los Angeles, when the pitchers squared off.

Both right-handers dominated, but neither earned a decision as the Dodgers won 2-1 following an eighth-inning single by Kyle Tucker off reliever Brooks Raley.

That’s been one of the fewer-than-expected bright spots this season for Tucker, signed by the Dodgers to a four-year, $240 million deal in the offseason. He is batting .240, which would be the lowest full-season average of his big-league career.

Tucker had another big moment on Friday as he hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give the Dodgers a couple of insurance runs. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk in the win, giving him eight homers and 50 RBIs in 97 games. He hit 22 home runs and drove in 73 last season in 136 games for the Chicago Cubs.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tucker’s performance on Friday could signal a breakthrough.

“It’s coming,” he said. “It hasn’t been as consistent or as fast as we’d like, but he’s still going through it. He’s still working hard and to see some success tonight was a good thing for him.”

Yamamoto will be looking for his first win against the Mets. In two starts, he’s allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and two walks in 13 2/3 innings. He struck out 16.

In the April clash against McLean, Yamamoto allowed just four hits and a walk in 7 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and Yamamoto’s only blemish was a solo home run to Francisco Lindor.

McLean has four wins in his past six starts. In his April start against Los Angeles, he struck out eight in seven innings three months ago, allowing a run on two hits and two walks.

As for Soto, interim manager Andy Green said he needed to see the MRI results to determine whether he needs to make a short- or long-term decision about his lineuop.

“We’ll wait [until Saturday] and figure out what we’re dealing with,” Green told reporters after the game.

Should Soto miss multiple games, it could open up an opportunity for Luis Robert Jr. to become a bigger part of the offense. The center fielder returned to the team earlier this week after a herniated disc kept him off the field for nearly three months.

On Friday, Robert, who hit a career-high 38 home runs for the Chicago White Sox in 2023, hit his fourth home run of the season and second in three games.

Reds go for series win vs. Cardinals in bid to close NL wild-card gap

The Cincinnati Reds know they face a tough road to potentially get into the playoffs. They sit six games behind Arizona in the National League wild-card race, as the Diamondbacks hold the final spot, with five other teams between them.

But with three straight wins and five in seven games since the All-Star break, the Reds want to keep the good times rolling Saturday night in the second game of three contests against the host St. Louis Cardinals.

Cincinnati won 4-2 in the series opener on Friday, with Eugenio Suarez delivering a two-run home run in the seventh inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 advantage.

The Reds added an insurance run in the ninth.

“We want to win as many games as possible and see what kind of situation we can put ourselves in by the deadline,” said closer Emilio Pagan, who tossed a perfect ninth to earn the save. “From there, go on a run. We’re behind the eight-ball, but we also know what we can do if we play the game the right way.”

It’s the Reds’ first three-game winning streak since May 23-26, part of a run that saw the club emerge victorious five times in a seven-game stretch.

The hill to climb into playoff contention will be tough, but the Reds will have a chance to help control their destiny thanks to their schedule. Series against the Diamondbacks and each of the five teams in between them in the playoff race, including a five-gamer against the Cardinals, are on tap over the final two months of the season.

St. Louis trails Arizona by 2 1/2 games in the wild-card chase.

“Anything can happen in baseball, so we’ve just got to continue to show up, keep doing what we’re doing, and who knows what can happen?” Reds left-fielder JJ Bleday said. “We put ourselves in a good spot. … We’re playing some good baseball.”

Right-hander Hunter Greene (2-1, 6.06 ERA) will start for Cincinnati on Saturday. He is 2-4 with a 3.23 ERA in nine career starts against St. Louis.

The Cardinals head into the middle contest of the series looking to get their bats going. On Friday, they didn’t get their first hit until the fifth inning when, with Ivan Herrera (hit by pitch) and Nathan Church (walk) on, Blaze Jordan doubled to put his team ahead 2-1.

St. Louis would manage just one other hit the rest of the way — another double, from Jimmy Crooks in the eighth.

“We have to get back to just taking some really tough at-bats,” manager Oliver Marmol said. “Regardless of the result, just the style of the at-bat. We haven’t done that as of late, and it’s led to the score being what it is at the end of nine. So we need to get back to that quicker.”

The Cardinals have lost seven of their past nine games.

They got a solid outing from starter Dustin May on Friday, with May striking out eight while giving up just one run on seven hits. St. Louis will hope for more of the same from right-hander Andre Pallante (10-6, 4.02 ERA) on Saturday.

Pallante has fared well against the Reds in his career, going 7-4 with a 2.41 ERA in 20 career appearances (10 starts), including 52 strikeouts in 67 1/3 innings.
