Fire reel off last 10 points, send Storm to ninth consecutive loss

Mandatory Credit: Troy Wayrynen-Imagn Images Emily Engstler’s basket with 1:17 left snapped a tie and the Portland Fire scored the final 10 points Wednesday night to rally past the visiting Seattle Storm 94-89.
Engstler’s fadeaway jumper put Portland (8-9, 2-5 Commissioner’s Cup) ahead 91-89. Engstler then drove the lane on the Fire’s next possession and fed Bridget Carleton for her seventh 3-pointer of the game with 40.5 seconds remaining for a five-point advantage.
Carleton scored a team-high 24 points and set a career high for made 3-pointers, while teammate Carla Leite added 20 points and 10 assists. Sarah Ashlee Barker contributed 12 points, and Karlie Samuelson came off the bench to net 10.
Dominique Malonga starred in defeat for Seattle (3-13, 0-7) with a career-high 28 points and a season-best 11 rebounds. Natisha Hiedeman added 19 points and tied her season high with five 3-pointers, while rookie Awa Fam matched her season best with 18 points on her 20th birthday.
It wasn’t enough to prevent the Storm’s ninth straight loss, one that saw the visitors get outscored 27-15 in the fourth quarter.
Coming off a 107-74 loss at Minnesota on Monday, Portland got off the mark in a hurry, particularly from 3-point range. The Fire made four in less than two minutes as they started the game with a 16-7 spurt.
Seattle quit turning the ball over and got going behind Hiedeman, who canned a pair of 3-pointers in a 16-5 run that allowed the Storm to take a 23-21 edge to the second quarter.
Neither team led by more than four points in a back-and-forth second period, which ended with Fam making a foul shot with 21.9 seconds remaining to give the Storm a 48-47 lead at the break.
After earning a 20-8 advantage in paint points in the first half, Seattle kept looking inside to Malonga in the third quarter, and she delivered. Malonga’s eight points helped the Storm establish the game’s largest lead at 68-56. While the Fire bounced back, they still trailed 74-67 going to the fourth period.

Seven Blue Jays pitchers combine to shut out Red Sox

Max Scherzer was supposed to start for Toronto but was placed on the 15-day injured list with back spasms before Wednesday’s game. Braydon Fisher started and got the first four outs before he was replaced by Simeon Woods Richardson (1-7), who allowed three hits and walked three in three scoreless innings.
Mason Fluharty (one-third of an inning), Spencer Miles (1 1/3 innings), Jeff Hoffman (one inning), Tyler Rogers (one inning) and Louis Varland (one inning) also pitched for Toronto, which opened the series with a 6-1 victory over Boston on Tuesday. Varland struck out the side in the ninth to record his 14th save.
Andres Gimenez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice. He also had three of Toronto’s five stolen bases. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added two hits and two RBIs.
Boston rookie Jake Bennett (1-3) made his fourth major league start and took the loss. Bennett allowed two runs on three hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and didn’t issue any walks.
Wilyer Abreu collected two of Boston’s seven hits. The Red Sox stranded 13 runners and were 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position.
The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the third. Davis Schneider doubled and put Toronto up 1-0 when he scored on a Gimenez single. Gimenez moved to second when George Springer was hit by a pitch, stole third and scored on Guerrero’s ground out to third.
Toronto added to its lead in the eighth. Gimenez singled, stole second, took third on Springer’s fly ball to right and scored on a Guerrero single to make it 3-0.

Paul Goldschmidt (3-run HR), Yankees wallop White Sox

Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images Paul Goldschmidt capped a five-run fifth inning by hitting a three-run homer and the New York Yankees extended their home winning streak over the Chicago White Sox to eight games with a 10-5 victory on Wednesday night.
The Yankees won their fourth straight and 15th in 20 games. New York also improved to 9-4 in 13 games since losing Aaron Judge to a fractured right rib and has outscored Chicago 22-7 in the first two games of the series.
Goldschmidt homered for the third time in four games and hit his 11th of the season, surpassing his total from 2025. He gave the Yankees a 9-3 lead by lifting a 1-1 fastball from Tyler Davis into the right field seats.
Cody Bellinger hit a two-run homer off Chicago’s Anthony Kay (6-2) to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Bellinger finished a triple shy of the cycle and registered his fifth three-hit game this season.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. added a leadoff homer in the seventh as the Yankees scored double-digit runs for the ninth time.
Jose Caballero hit a two-run single in the fifth as the Yankees finished with 13 hits after totaling 16 in Tuesday’s 12-2 rout. Anthony Volpe hit an RBI triple and Ali Sanchez contributed an RBI single in the second.
Colson Montgomery hit a three-run homer off Carlos Rodon (3-2) in the third to get the White Sox within one run before the Yankees pulled away. Montgomery notched his first career multi-homer game when he connected on a solo shot in the eighth off Paul Blackburn.
Rookie Sam Antoncacci homered in the ninth as the White Sox fell to 5-5 in a stretch of 11 straight games against the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Dodgers and Yankees.
Rodon improved to 4-0 in four starts against his former team. allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walked one.
Rodon pitched with runners on base in each inning. He protected a one-run lead by getting three straight strikeouts to strand a runner in the fourth and retired Montgomery on a groundout with a runner on to end the fifth.
Kay gave up four runs on six hits in four innings. Sean Newcomb allowed three runs in the fifth, when he exited after a Volpe liner hit him in the left triceps.

Luis Arraez drives in 4, Giants hold off Braves to sweep twin bill

Mandatory Credit: Jordan Godfree-Imagn Images Luis Arraez homered and drove in four runs and Carson Whisenhunt tossed five solid innings in his season debut on Wednesday to help the visiting San Francisco Giants post a 7-5 victory over the Atlanta Braves in the second game of a doubleheader.
Whisenhunt (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two in his first game since being called up from Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday morning. Willy Adames and Bryce Eldridge both hit solo home runs for the Giants, who won 7-2 in the opener on Wednesday and won their third straight overall.
J.R. Ritchie (1-2) threw five innings of five-hit, five-run ball, striking out four and walking three for the scuffling Braves, who dropped their sixth game in seven tries. Carlos Carrasco allowed two runs across four innings in relief.
After Arraez began the first inning with a walk, Rafael Devers drove in the Giants’ first run with a two-out double.
Atlanta threatened in the bottom of the first, as Mauricio Dubon began the frame with a walk and Ozzie Albies laced a two-out single. After Whisenhunt’s wild pitch advanced both runners, Austin Riley’s fly out to center ended the inning.
Adames began the second with his 13th homer of the season to double the Giants’ lead. Three batters later, Arraez connected on a two-run shot to give the visitors a 4-0 lead.
San Francisco continued the onslaught as Eldridge launched another homer to push the margin to five.
In the sixth, Matt Olson, Albies and Riley each singled to cut the Braves’ deficit to 5-1.
JT Brubaker then relieved Whisenhunt. Two batters later, Dominic Smith’s sacrifice fly made it 5-2.
Olson singled off Sam Hentges to begin the eighth. Ryan Walker then entered in relief and struck out Albies. Riley singled to bring the tying run to the plate.
From there, Eli White flew out and Rowdy Tellez struck out to leave the margin at three.
Casey Schmitt singled and Drew Gilbert was hit by a pitch in the ninth. Two batters later, Arraez drove in both runners with a single to give the Giants a 7-2 lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Matt Gage allowed Jair Camargo’s two-out double and Dubon’s two-run homer, pulling the Braves within three. After Drake Baldwin and Olson both singled, Gage was replaced by Tristan Beck.
A wild pitch then cut the Giants lead to two, but Beck retired Albies and got Riley to strike out to end the game.
