Dillon Dingler's slam highlights Tigers' late eruption vs. A's

Mandatory Credit: Ed Szczepanski-Imagn Images Dillon Dingler hit his first career grand slam and Kevin McGonigle and Ben Malgeri also homered to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 13-1 victory over the Athletics on Friday night at West Sacramento, Calif.
Javier Baez had three hits and three RBIs and Max Clark had three hits, two runs and an RBI in his major league debut for the Tigers, who broke the game open with 11 runs over the final two innings. Spencer Torkelson had three hits and scored three times while Dingler added two hits for Detroit.
With the trade deadline arriving Monday, the Tigers scratched right-hander Casey Mize on Friday and went with a bullpen game.
Tyler Holton was the first pitcher and gave up one run and one hit in two innings. Ty Madden (1-0) allowed two hits over three shutout innings, Drew Sommers struck out three in two perfect innings and Enmanuel De Jesus finished up with two scoreless frames.
Jonah Heim drove in the lone run for the Athletics, who have dropped six of seven games and 27 of 34.
Starter Jeffrey Springs (3-11) allowed two runs and four hits over four innings. He walked five and struck out two and is winless in his last 18 starts.
The Tigers tied the score at 1 with one out in the third when McGonigle smacked a 3-1 fastball over the wall in center, the 10th homer of his rookie season.
One inning later, Torkelson walked and Clark singled to left for his first big league hit. After Baez lined out, Malgeri walked to load the bases before McGonigle hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Torkelson.
The Tigers created distance in the eighth with a seven-run uprising.
Pinch hitter Eduardo Valencia doubled and Torkelson singled to start the inning. Clark doubled to the wall in left to give Detroit a 3-1 lead and end Brady Basso’s outing.
Luis Morales entered and Baez hit a blooper over the head of second baseman Jeff McNeil to knock in Torkelson. Malgeri hit a bouncer to third that was booted by Tommy White and Clark scored to make it 5-1.
McGonigle walked before Gleyber Torres was retired on a scorching liner hit directly at Athletics shortstop Jacob Wilson. Dingler followed with his grand slam, a shot over the wall in center that increased the lead to 9-1. The homer was his team-leading 23rd of the season.
Detroit poured it on in the ninth as Torkelson singled, Clark doubled and Baez hit a two-run ground single. Malgeri followed with his first career homer to left to make it 13-1.
The Athletics struck in the opening inning when Wilson walked with one out and scored on Heim’s RBI double to center.

Terry Rozier asks judge to throw out charges from gambling probe

Mandatory Credit: Reggie Hildred-Imagn Images The lawyers of Terry Rozier, in an effort to have two of the four federal charges against the NBA veteran thrown out, filed a motion Friday that a text message proves that Rozier was not involved in a sports gambling scheme.
Attorney David Markus wrote that Deniro Laster, a co-defendant and a friend of Rozier, sent a text on March 29, 2023, to a person to not tell Rozier of the bet made on him six days prior, while Rozier was with the Charlotte Hornets.
Rozier’s lawyers said he did not know anyone was betting on his statistics during that game and never agreed to change his play on the court to appease sports gamblers.
“Don’t tell chum ’bout the bet,” Laster said in the message, referring to Rozier by what his lawyers say is his nickname.
“This should end the case,” lawyers for Rozier wrote in the legal filing. “One does not hide a bet from the person who supposedly sold it.”
Federal prosecutors responded with a motion for the judge to deny Rozier’s request, writing that they have “developed evidence from multiple sources that this text chain does not relate to sports gambling.”
Markus and Anita Margot Moss, Rozier’s other attorney, are asking the charges of sports bribery and honest services fraud be dismissed from the case brought out of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York. Markus and Moss also requested that the case be moved to the Southern District of Florida.
“Terry Rozier is innocent,” the lawyers for Rozier wrote in a motion to dismiss the case filed Friday. “He is a basketball player, not a gambler. He never bet on anything, never agreed to underperform, never did underperform, and did not know that anyone was wagering on his statistics in the Charlotte Hornets’ March 23, 2023, game.”
In December, Rozier asked the judge to throw out the other two counts — wire fraud conspiracy and conspiracy to commit money laundering — but the judge has not sent a decision.
According to federal prosecutors, Rozier agreed to accept $100,000 to remove himself from that March 2023 game with the Hornets so a group of gamblers would successfully wager on his prop bets. He failed to reach his season averages in points, assists and 3-pointers but eclipsed the over/under line on rebounds.
Rozier, one of six people originally charged, is set for a trial Feb. 8 along with former NBA player Damon Jones and Shane Hennen. Allegedly one of the gamblers involved in the probe, Hennen pleaded guilty earlier this week in a case that claimed he was involved in a rigged poker game scheme that implicated 30 others, including Hall of Famer and former Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups.
Rozier, 32, was arrested and charged in October before prosecutors added sports bribery and honest services wire fraud conspiracy counts to the case in May. Rozier pleaded not guilty and denied the charges through his attorneys.

Tomoyuki Sugano stifles Royals as Rockies halt 4-game skid

Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Tomoyuki Sugano pitched strongly into the seventh inning, Kyle Karros had two hits in his return and the Colorado Rockies beat the Kansas City Royals 3-1 in Denver on Friday night.
Sugano, who won his seventh straight decision, got two outs in the seventh before giving way to Antonio Senzatela. Sugano (11-4) allowed one run on five hits, struck out two and walked none in 6 2/3 innings.
Jordan Romano picked up his ninth save for Colorado, which snapped a four-game skid. The victory was the Rockies’ 43rd of the season, matching last year’s total in just 110 games.
Carter Jensen homered and Salvador Perez had two hits for Kansas City, which has lost three of its last four games.
The game’s first pitch was delayed one hour as a strong storm blew through downtown Denver, dumping heavy rain and hail on Coors Field.
Colorado grabbed the lead against starter Michael Wacha in the first inning. With one out, Mickey Moniak doubled to the right field corner. After Wacha fanned Hunter Goodman, TJ Rumfield singled to make it 1-0.
After Karros singled, Wacha retired the next eight batters — including striking out the side in the third — but the Rockies padded their lead in the fourth.
Karros, who missed two games with left biceps inflammation, singled with one out, moved to second on Tyler Freeman’s groundout and scored when second baseman Michael Massey threw wildly to first on Troy Johnston’s grounder. Brenton Doyle, activated from the injured list before the game, doubled in his first appearance since May 19 to give Colorado a 3-0 lead.
Wacha (5-8) didn’t give up a hit the rest of his outing and allowed just one baserunner to reach via a Josh Rojas error. Wacha gave up three runs (one earned), struck out seven and didn’t walk a batter in six innings.
Sugano was in control through five innings, allowing just two hits, and got the first two outs in the sixth before Jensen hit his 15th home run of the season to get Kansas City on the board.

Twins acquire RHP Dean Kremer in second trade in a day

For the second time Friday, the Twins traded for pitching, sending minor league outfielder Jhomnardo Reyes to Baltimore in exchange for veteran right-hander Dean Kremer.
Early Friday morning, the Twins acquired reliever A.J. Minter from the New York Mets for a pair of prospects.
Kremer, 30, has gone 1-4 with a 6.50 ERA in seven starts this season. He began the season with Triple-A Norfolk before making two starts for the Orioles in April. A right quad strain landed him on the injured list before he was reinstated July 1.
Since making his major league debut in 2020, Kremer is 42-44 with a 4.37 ERA across 133 appearances (130 starts) spanning 707 2/3 innings, all with the Orioles.
Kremer was originally selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 14th round of the 2016 draft out of UNLV. The Orioles acquired him in July 2018 in the trade that sent Manny Machado to Los Angeles.
Reyes, 18, is ranked as a top-25 Twins prospect by multiple outlets. He hit .296 with 12 doubles, three triples, seven home runs, 31 runs, 44 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 47 games with the Florida Complex League Twins before being promoted to Class-A Fort Myers on July 24. He was signed as an international free agent on Jan. 15 of last year.
The Twins are 3 1/2 games behind the Chicago White Sox for the American League Central lead and a half-game back of fellow Central foe Cleveland for the final AL wild-card spot.
The trade deadline is 6 p.m. ET on Monday.
