D-backs' Jose Cabrera bids to test mettle vs. Brewers

Cabrera (0-1, 3.60 ERA) made his second MLB start last Saturday and took the loss after allowing four runs and seven hits in five innings of a 4-2 defeat at the Tampa Bay Rays.
After surrendering a first-inning home run to Junior Caminero, Cabrera blanked the Rays until Jonathan Aranda’s two-out, two-run homer in the fifth.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said he was hesitant to let Cabrera face the top of the order for a third time, but he thought Cabrera earned the opportunity.
“Those are little things that we’ve got to figure out,” Lovullo said. “But overall, he attacked the zone against a team that doesn’t strike out a lot. They’re going to put the ball in play, and he was doing a good job.
“He’s been a very pleasant surprise for us. This is a kid that was in Double-A a month ago — or even less — maybe three weeks ago, and now he’s pitching [in] the big leagues in meaningful games. He’s going to continue to get the ball.”
Cabrera, 24, served notice he was ready to face the best hitters when he fired five shutout innings in his major league debut on June 21 in his team’s 4-2 loss against the visiting Minnesota Twins.
“That’s just my mindset — attack, attack, attack,” Cabrera said. “It doesn’t matter what happened, I just want to keep going and do whatever I have to do to keep following the plan I’ve got with my catcher.”
Arizona is coming off a 6-4 loss against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night, which prevented the Diamondbacks from starting 9-0 against their National League West rivals this season.
The Brewers, meanwhile, were foiled in their bid for a four-game home sweep of the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday afternoon before they left for an 11-game road trip. Milwaukee fell 7-2 to Cincinnati in the series finale.
The Brewers on Friday will start left-hander Kyle Harrison (8-1, 2.57 ERA), who has won seven straight decisions but has gone without a decision in his past two outings.
Harrison most recently allowed two runs and three hits in five innings of his team’s 8-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.
Harrison retired the first 10 batters before Matt Shaw singled with one out in the fourth inning. Harrison said he wanted to come out for the sixth with the score 2-2 but was removed after 92 pitches.
“I was upset I couldn’t really go out for the sixth,” Harrison said. “(The Cubs) grinded some tough at-bats, and I was executing some pitches and they were fouling it off.”
After the bullpen gates opened, Chicago got to the Milwaukee relievers for six runs.
“I know it’s cliche to say, but you ‘flush it,'” Harrison said. “At the end of the day, those guys are great down there, and we’re just going to keep pumping them up with confidence.”
Harrison has faced Arizona four times in his career, including three starts, and is 0-2 with an 8.56 ERA. He last went against the Diamondbacks when he threw an inning of shutout relief against them last season as a member of the Giants.

Rangers record season-high 17 hits in win over Tigers

Nathan Eovaldi (9-7) allowed three runs on six hits over five-plus innings. He struck out nine with one walk and improved to 6-0 in nine career starts against Detroit.
Alejandro Osuna and Nicky Lopez each had three hits and an RBI for Texas, which won for the seventh time in eight games. Josh Jung, Ezequiel Duran and Smith each contributed two hits and two RBIs.
Hao-Yu Lee hit a two-run homer and Colt Keith added a solo shot for Detroit, which had its three-game win streak snapped. Zach McKinstry, Dillon Dingler and Kevin McGonigle each had two hits.
Tigers starter Framber Valdez (4-6) yielded five runs on nine hits over five innings. He walked two and struck out one.
Texas claimed a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Diaz opened the scoring with his second homer in as many games, a one-out solo blast.
Osuna and Lopez followed with back-to-back singles before Justin Foscue walked to load the bases. Jung walked to drive in a run, and another scored on Duran’s sacrifice fly.
The Rangers added to their lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Jung doubled in a run with one out and scored on Duran’s single to center field.
Eovaldi no-hit the Tigers through four innings before Keith’s leadoff homer in the fifth. With two outs and a runner on, Lee’s long ball cut the deficit to 5-3.
Texas extended its lead with one out in the bottom of the sixth on Smith’s pinch-hit homer.
The Rangers sent nine batters to the plate and tacked on three runs in the seventh. The rally included consecutive run-scoring singles from Osuna, Lopez and Smith against Drew Sommers.
Detroit pushed a run across in the eighth when Ben Malgeri’s one-out single scored McKinstry, who had doubled.
Carter added a solo shot in the bottom of the eighth for the final margin.
The three-game series will take a break on Friday due to the World Cup round of 32 match between Australia and Egypt being played across the street at the home field of the Dallas Cowboys.

Kahleah Copper pours in 30 points as Mercury blitz Storm

Phoenix (8-13) has achieved its first three-game winning streak of the season.
Seattle (5-16) had its two-game winning streak snapped.
The Storm are 0-3 against Phoenix and 0-11 against Western Conference teams this season.
Phoenix’s Alyssa Thomas returned from her one-game suspension issued by the WNBA for planting a fist on Caitlin Clark’s neck in the Mercury’s win at Indiana last week. Thomas had a near triple-double on Thursday with nine points, nine assists and 13 rebounds.
Valeriane Ayayi added 18 points for the Mercury.
Seattle was led by Natisha Hiedeman and Awa Fam, both of whom had 13 points. Flau’jae Johnson and Jade Melbourne each posted 11 points.
Phoenix did not trail again after going ahead 5-4 with 8:46 left in the first quarter on an Ayayi 3-pointer.
The hosts took a 55-36 halftime lead behind 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the field by Copper.
Ayayi had 13 points despite picking up three fouls and sitting for more than six minutes in the half.
Phoenix led by as many as 26 points in the third quarter, and Seattle could get no closer than 10 points in the second half.
The Mercury recorded 23 assists on their 33 made field goals, and they outrebounded Seattle 40-29.
Phoenix’s DeWanna Bonner, who had eight rebounds, secured the seventh spot on the WNBA’s all-time rebound list with her sixth board of the night. She ended the game with 3,310 for her career, three more than Hall of Famer Lisa Leslie.
The starting lineups for both teams dominated the scoring with Phoenix’s reserves scoring only 10 points and Seattle’s bench finishing with 14.
Seattle starters Johnson, Fam, Dominique Malonga, Hiedeman and Melbourne had 53 points, but the team struggled from the field, shooting 41.9% while committing 13 turnovers.
The Mercury shot 45.2% from the floor and gave the ball away 11 times.
Phoenix has won four of its last five after losing 10 of 12 games.
Seattle had won two straight after enduring a franchise-record 11 straight games.

Bryce Miller's strong outing propels Mariners past Angels

Cal Raleigh drew a bases-loaded walk off Angels starter Walbert Urena (5-7) with two outs in the bottom of the sixth to score the game’s lone run.
Miller (4-2) allowed two hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight after the right-hander had lost his previous two starts.
Neither team had a hit until Seattle’s J.P. Crawford led off the bottom of the sixth with a double into right-center field. Dominic Canzone and Randy Arozarena drew one-out walks before Urena struck out Josh Naylor on three pitches. Urena got ahead 0-2 in the count to Raleigh before last season’s home-run champ rebounded to draw a walk.
The Angels’ only baserunner through six innings came on a throwing error by third baseman Crawford after a grounder by Denzer Guzman with two outs in the fourth.
Los Angeles’ first hit came when Nolan Schanuel hit a bloop nearly off his hands into shallow right leading off the seventh, the ball falling just past the reach of second baseman Cole Young and in front of sliding right fielder Weston Wilson. Guzman followed with a fly ball down the right-field line that went off the glove of a diving Wilson, putting runners at first and second.
Miller struck out Jorge Soler, got Wade Meckler to fly out to center field and got Jo Adell to ground into a force out to get out of the jam.
Mariners reliever Eduard Bazardo retired the side in order in the eighth with two strikeouts and closer Andres Munoz worked the ninth for his 16th save of the season.
Munoz issued a leadoff walk to Zach Neto before picking him off first base. Schanuel lined a single to center and Soler grounded a two-out single to left, putting runners at first and second. Munoz got Meckler to ground out to short to end the game.
The Mariners threatened in the first, loading the bases with one out on a walk, error and hit by pitch, before Urena got Josh Naylor to hit into an inning-ending double play.
Urena gave up one run on one hit over 5 2/3 innings. The righty walked four, hit two batters with pitches and fanned six.
Mariners outfielders Julio Rodriguez and Victor Robles both left the game due to injuries. Rodriguez was hit in the back of the helmet by an errant throw from first baseman Schanuel while running the bases in the first inning and Robles, who replaced Rodriguez in the third, was hit by a pitch in the right wrist/forearm area by a 97.9 mph Urena sinker and exited in the fifth.
