Chiefs lose Rashee Rice, still clip Chargers

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Samaje Perine snapped a fourth-quarter tie with a short touchdown run and Patrick Mahomes shrugged off a slow start to throw for 245 yards as the visiting Kansas City Chiefs stayed unbeaten with a 17-10 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
Mahomes completed 19 of 29 passes with a touchdown and an interception and overcame the early loss of receiver Rashee Rice, who caught 24 passes in the team’s first three games. Rice left Sunday’s contest in the first quarter due to a knee injury and didn’t return.
Travis Kelce picked up the slack with Rice out and finished with season-high totals of seven catches for 89 yards, while Perine put Kansas City (4-0) ahead for good with a 2-yard scoring plunge with 6:04 remaining in the game.
Justin Herbert hit on 16 of 27 passes for 179 yards and a touchdown for Los Angeles (2-2), which managed only 224 total yards and 12 first downs.
The pregame storyline was centered around how Los Angeles would cope with a short-handed offensive line that didn’t feature either starting tackle due to injuries sustained in last week’s 20-10 loss in Pittsburgh.
But the Chargers got off to a fast start anyway, thanks in large part to Kansas City mistakes. After recovering a Carson Steele fumble at its own 26 just over two minutes into the game, Los Angeles marched 74 yards for a 7-0 lead that came on Herbert’s 7-yard touchdown pass to rookie Ladd McConkey.
Mahomes then tossed an interception to Kristian Fulton on the Chiefs’ next snap and then plowed into Rice’s knee while trying to make a tackle. Rice was carted off the field, and Los Angeles soon made it 10-0 on Cameron Dicker’s 50-yard field goal.
Kansas City struck back with 4:06 left in the first half on the first play after a punt. Mahomes unleashed a bomb that Xavier Worthy grabbed for a 54-yard score. The Chiefs had a chance to tally again before the break, but two holding penalties forced them to settle for a 65-yard field-goal try that Harrison Butker missed as time expired.

Panthers RT Taylor Moton (blood clot), CB Jaycee Horn (foot) headed to NFI list

Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-Imagn Images Panthers standout right tackle Taylor Moton is dealing with a blood clot in his lung and will miss the beginning of the 2026 season, Carolina announced Tuesday.
Moton was diagnosed with the blood clot in June and was placed on blood thinners. The team said he is responding well to treatment and is being assessed daily by the team’s trainers.
The Panthers will place Moton on the reverse/non-football injury list when veterans report to training camp.
Moton, who turns 32 next month, started 15 of 16 games played last season. He was unable to play on the offensive line due to a knee injury in the Week 9 game against the Green Bay Packers but played three snaps on special teams.
Overall, Moton has started 128 of 145 games played for Carolina since entering the league as a second-round draft choice in 2017.
The Panthers will also place two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn on the NFI list due to a foot injury that required stitches. He was injured while running and is expected to return early in training camp.
Horn, 26, had a career-best five interceptions last season to go with 37 tackles in 16 games. He has 10 interceptions and 190 tackles in 53 games (all starts) over five NFL seasons.
On Tuesday’s rookie reporting date, cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau was placed on the NFI list. He is an undrafted free agent from Texas.

Lynx try to stay hot in rematch with Storm

Mandatory Credit: Steven Bisig-Imagn Images For the second time this week, the Minnesota Lynx will face the Storm in Seattle on Wednesday in the final game for both teams before the WNBA’s All-Star break.
The Lynx (21-6) defeated the Storm (6-22) on Monday night behind a herculean effort from rookie point guard Olivia Miles. The No. 2 overall draft pick tallied 32 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in the 105-102 victory. Miles became just the fifth player in WNBA history to record such a stat line in a game and joined Candace Parker as the only rookie to do it.
On the season, Miles is averaging 19.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game while shooting 50.1% from the floor. She ranks eighth in the league in scoring and seventh in assists. According to the women’s basketball website HerHoopStats, Miles is the only player in league history to average at least 19.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and six assists per game in a single season.
The Lynx have also enjoyed recent standout performances from veteran guard Kayla McBride, who was named WNBA Player of the Week after averaging 27 points per game over her last three outings, all wins for Minnesota.
The Lynx have needed great scoring performances from Miles and McBride because, while they’ve won six straight games, they’ve allowed 90 points or more in three of their last four.
“It’s special when you can walk away with a win and be like, ‘We have so many things to get better at,'” Miles said.
Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve added: “Our three perimeter players have been special all season. Right now, we’re needing them to have these prolific efforts in order for us to win a game because our defense is nowhere to be found.”
The Storm are riding a five-game losing streak and have lost seven of their last eight games.
Still, their young core of Dominique Malonga, Awa Fam and Flau’jae Johnson — all first-round picks over the last two drafts — have continued to shine. Johnson had 26 points against the Lynx on Monday, while Malonga is averaging 16.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game.
“Actually, our youth is our strength. We have a lot of energy, and we never stop,” Malonga recently told Slam Magazine. “I really can’t wait to keep developing this chemistry with the two of them because I think that’s a real big three right there.”

Orioles-Red Sox postponed; doubleheader Wednesday

Boston’s home game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night was postponed due to what the team called “significant rainfall and thunderstorms in the Fenway (Park) area.”
The American League East rivals will play a doubleheader Wednesday. Tuesday’s rescheduled game will begin at 1:35 p.m. local, while Game 2 will remain at its scheduled time of 7:10 p.m.
The Red Sox opened the three-game series with a 6-5 victory Monday night, which also ended a season-high seven-game win streak for the Orioles. They are one win away from matching the franchise record of 15 consecutive wins set in 1946.
Pitching plans for the twin bill were not yet known. The Red Sox had planned to start left-hander Ranger Suarez (4-3, 3.15 ERA) opposite Orioles right-hander Kyle Bradish (6-9, 3.61) on Tuesday before the rainout.
