Casey Schmitt, Giants dominate Athletics pitching in victory
May 16, 2026; West Sacramento, California, USA; San Francisco Giants designated hitter Casey Schmitt (10) hits a home run against the Athletics during the first inning at Sutter Health Park. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images Casey Schmitt hit two homers for the second time in his career and finished with four hits and three RBIs to lead the San Francisco Giants to a 6-4 victory over the Athletics on Saturday night at West Sacramento, Calif.
The four-hit outing was the fourth of Schmitt’s career and it helped the Giants halt a three-game losing streak. Willy Adames had three hits and two RBI and Rafael Devers and Drew Gilbert added two hits apiece for San Francisco, which had 14 overall, eight for extra bases.
Trevor McDonald (2-0) allowed one run and five hits over 6 2/3 innings for the Giants. He struck out five and walked one.
San Francisco’s Matt Gage worked a perfect ninth for his first save.
Brent Rooker hit a three-run homer and joined Darell Hernaiz in having two hits for the Athletics, who lost for the fourth time in their past six games.
Luis Severino (2-5) gave up five runs and 10 hits over six innings. He struck out seven and walked two while dropping to 3-11 in 19 starts at Sutter Health Park since joining the A’s prior to last season.
Schmitt hit a full-count sweeper from Severino over the wall in left with two out in the first to give San Francisco the lead for good.
The Giants loaded the bases with one out in the third when Jung Hoo Lee singled, Luis Arraez drew a walk and Schmitt singled. After Devers struck out, Adames knocked in two runs but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double.
Arraez walked with one out in the fifth before Schmitt went the opposite way. He hit a first-pitch cutter from Severino off the right-field foul pole to make it 5-0.
The Athletics got on the board in the bottom of the inning. Lawrence Butler walked and moved to third on a single by Hernaiz and scored on Jeff McNeil’s fielder’s choice.
In the seventh, Devers led off with a double and scored later in the inning on Matt Chapman’s double.
The Athletics closed the gap in the eighth as Nick Kurtz and Shea Langeliers led off the inning with walks against Erik Miller. One out later, Caleb Kilian replaced the left-hander and Rooker came up and drilled a first-pitch slider well over the wall in left to pull the A’s within 6-4.
Kilian recovered by striking out the next two hitters.
The walk stretched Kurtz’s streak of reaching base to 39 consecutive games, the longest by an A’s player since Jason Giambi reached in 39 straight in both the 1997 and 1998 seasons. Mark McGwire had a 48-game streak in 1996.

Featherweight Arnold Allen back on winning track at UFC Fight Night
Jan 24, 2026; Las Vegas, Nevada, USA; Arnold Allen (red gloves) fights Jean Silva (blue gloves) during UFC 324 at T-Mobile Arena. Mandatory Credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn Images Seventh-ranked featherweight Arnold Allen defeated No. 12 Melquizael Costa at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas on Saturday, putting together a dominant striking performance to end Costa’s six-fight winning streak.
Allen won on the judges’ scorecards by unanimous decision, 50-45, 50-45, 49-46.
Allen (21-4) capitalized on a first-round knockdown but really started to pull away in the third round, where the Englishman landed 44 significant strikes to Costa’s 23 after the Brazilian held an early advantage in that department.
Costa (26-8) fought an effective fourth round and had Allen on his backfoot to start the fourth, but Allen quickly recovered to preserve the lead he built on the cards.
The win marks Allen’s first in the UFC since July 2024, when he beat Giga Chikadze by unanimous decision at UFC 304. Allen lost a unanimous decision to Jean Silva in January in Las Vegas.
South Korean featherweight DooHo Choi defeated Brazil’s Daniel Santos in the co-main event by TKO at 4:29 of the second round, dropping Santos with a shot to the body after a come-from-behind effort.
Santos (14-3) dominated the first round and nearly finished the fight himself with his explosive striking, but Choi (16-4-1) withstood the onslaught and the early output proved costly for Santos later on.
The victory comes in Choi’s first UFC appearance since December 2024, when he beat Nate Landwehr by TKO at UFC 310. Choi, who missed all of 2025 with a knee injury, didn’t miss a beat in his return and looked as explosive as ever in the second round despite all of the damage he sustained in the first.
Seven months after earning a UFC contract with a spinning elbow knockout during Dana White’s Contender Series, Peruvian bantamweight Juan Diaz (16-1-1) shocked heavily favored Malcolm Wellmaker (10-2) in his first official UFC fight via rear-naked choke at 4:05 of the second round. Wellmaker, from Augusta, Ga., has now lost consecutive fights after starting his career 10-0 overall and 2-0 in the UFC.
Modestas Bukauskas (20-7) defeated Christian Edwards (8-5) by split decision in a closely contested 215-pound catch-weight fight.
Bukauskas nearly finished the American multiple times early in the fight but resorted to the clinch each time, allowing Edwards to make his way back in the fight and ultimately make it a toss-up on the scorecards, 28-29, 29-28, 29-28.
A light heavyweight from Lithuania, Bukauskas now has won seven of his last nine fights following his return to the UFC in 2023 after going 1-3 during his initial stint with the organization.
Rising bantamweight Bernardo Sopaj impressed with a second-round stoppage in just his third UFC fight, beating Timmy Cuamba by submission via rear-naked choke at 2:25 of the second round after leaving the American (10-4) bloodied and battered with a series of combinations and effective ground-and-pound.
Sopaj (13-3) of Albania is now 2-1 in the UFC, winning consecutive fights after losing in his debut.
Welterweight knockout artist Khaos Williams opened the main card with one of the finest TKOs of his career, stopping Kazakhstan’s Nikolay Veretennikov (14-8) at 3:31 of the first round with an explosive combination of punches.
Williams (16-5) inflicted significant damage throughout the short-lived fight, earning the ninth KO/TKO win of his professional career. The stoppage came nearly two years after the American’s last UFC win over Carlston Harris in May 2024 and directly following an 11-month layoff after a loss to Andreas Gustafsson at UFC 316 last June.

Cincinnati, San Diego trade stoppage-time goals in draw
May 16, 2026; San Diego, California, USA; San Diego FC midfielder Anders Dreyer (10) reacts after kicking the ball against the FC Cincinnati during the first half at Snapdragon Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Abe Arredondo-Imagn Images Host San Diego FC’s Marcus Ingvartsen and FC Cincinnati’s Tom Barlow both scored twice, and a helter-skelter finish culminated in a 3-3 draw Saturday night.
Saturday night was the clubs’ first-ever meeting, and it did not disappoint.
Ingvartsen gave San Diego a 3-2 lead in the sixth minute of stoppage time, and a raucous crowd could sense a second straight win. But on Cincinnati’s final push, Barlow connected on a right-footed shot from the center of the box to tie the match and ensure Cincinnati would fly back across the country with a point in the standings.
It didn’t take long for FC Cincinnati (4-5-5, 17 points) to draw first blood. In the 11th minute, Evander threaded a pass right through San Diego’s defensive back line, which found Kenji Mboma who did the rest by connecting on a wide-open left-footed shot from the center of the box.
San Diego FC (4-5-5, 17 points) responded 21 minutes later when Ingvarsten booted in a left-footed shot into the lower-left corner of the net for his 11h goal of the season.
Evander earned a corner kick in the 50th minute after having a free kick deflected over the net, and he took advantage by hooking the ball into Barlow who booted in a goal in traffic to give Cincinnati a 2-1 lead.
But just like they couldn’t do in the first half, FC Cincinnati couldn’t hold the lead. Sixteen minutes later, San Diego FC’s Amahl Pellegrino found himself 1-on-1 outside the box with Cincinnati goalkeeper Roman Celentano. Pellegrino rifled a right-footed shot past a diving Celentano to tie the game 2-2.
Celentano made two saves, while San Diego goalkeeper Duran Ferree had three saves.
Both teams played fast and aggressive throughout the night. There were a combined four yellow cards and 17 fouls. San Diego made 718 total passes and held possession for 58.6% of the time. It outshot Cincinnati 17-8, but Cincinnati had six shots on goal to San Diego’s five.

Real Salt Lake rallies to beat Colorado in Rocky Mountain Cup match
May 16, 2026; Sandy, Utah, USA; Real Salt Lake forward Sergi Solans (22) shoots the ball against Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington (22) during the first half at America First Field. Mandatory Credit: Rob Gray-Imagn Images Sergi Solans scored the go-ahead goal on a header in the 68th minute as Real Salt Lake claimed a 2-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday in Sandy, Utah.
Zavier Gozo also scored, and Solans and Juan Manuel Sanabria recorded assists for Real Salt Lake (8-4-1, 25 points) in the first leg of the Rocky Mountain Cup.
Wayne Frederick scored for Colorado (5-8-1, 16 points) in his second match back after a two-week absence due to a leg injury.
Salt Lake took a 2-1 lead when Sanabria’s pass from outside the box connected with Solans, who rose above a line of defenders and headed home the goal.
Colorado opened the scoring in the seventh minute when Connor Ronan drove a corner kick to the back post, where Paxten Aaronson settled it, shook a defender and slid a pass to Frederick, who popped a shot over RSL goalkeeper Rafael Cabral for a 1-0 advantage.
A Rapids turnover set up RSL’s equalizer in the 36th minute. Colorado defender Jackson Travis’ backward pass was intercepted by Solans, whose patient cross set up Gozo’s sliding goal.
Earlier in the match, Salt Lake’s attack began to build in the 29th minute, as Gozo’s shot from the corner of the box was covered up by Rapids goalie Nico Hansen.
Connor Ronan’s stretch pass from midfield connected with Rafael Navarro in stride in the 52nd minute. Cabral deflected Navarro’s shot from 10 yards out, then quickly turned toward the goal to secure the ball before it crossed the line.
The pace increased in the 72nd minute as Gozo forced Hansen to gather a shot ticketed for the lower-right corner. In quick transition at the other end, Georgi Minoungou’s pass found Navarro, whose header missed high and wide.
In the 84th minute, Solans had another chance with a header but couldn’t cleanly connect with Sanabria’s corner kick.
Real Salt Lake was active in its attacking third, as eight of its 17 shots were on frame, while Colorado placed four of its eight shots on target. Hansen finished with six saves, while Cabral had three.
