Cameron Smith and Ripper GC won a LIV Golf team title for their native Australia, not to mention boatloads of cash for themselves.

The all-Australian team of Smith, Lucas Herbert, Matt Jones and Marc Leishman edged 4Aces GC and won the LIV Golf Team Championship on Sunday outside Dallas, bringing a close to the third season of the Saudi-backed breakaway tour.

The final round of the team championship featured 18 holes of stroke play at Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas, with every player’s score combining to create their respective teams’ scores. The four winners in Saturday’s match-play semifinals qualified for the final.

Herbert and Smith made hugely important birdie putts down the stretch to lift Ripper to 11-under 277 and a three-stroke victory.

Tied for second at 8 under were Dustin Johnson’s 4Aces, which won the team title in the inaugural 2022 season, and the underdog Iron Heads GC. Legion XIII — playing without captain Jon Rahm of Spain, the 2024 individual champion — placed fourth at 6 under.

Ripper is the third different team to win the LIV team championship in three seasons. They captured $14 million of the $50 million prize pool.

There was a three-way tie at 8 under featuring Ripper, 4Aces and Iron Heads with just a few holes for each team to finish. Herbert, atoning for a triple bogey early in his round, was powering Ripper’s late move with three straight birdies at Nos. 15-17, as the team eked ahead at 9 under.

Harold Varner III made a long birdie at his last hole, No. 1, to bring 4Aces into a tie with Ripper at 9 under. But Herbert then rolled a slippery birdie putt into the cup, following it in with an emphatic fist pump, as Ripper moved back in front at 10 under.

Patrick Reed of 4Aces had a 5-foot birdie try at the final hole, but it curled dramatically right to left and stayed out. Smith then rolled in his fifth birdie of the day at No. 17 to give Ripper a two-shot lead.

Johnson, playing in the final group with Smith, Iron Heads captain Kevin Na and Legion XIII’s Tyrrell Hatton, had a chance to bring 4Aces to 10 under as well, but his birdie try at No. 17 rolled past the cup.

Then, after Smith teed off at No. 18, Johnson’s tee shot sailed left and into a water hazard, essentially clinching Ripper’s victory.

Smith led Ripper with a 4-under 68. Herbert shot a 3-under 69, and Jones and Leishman each posted 70. Johnson and Reed scored the best rounds for 4Aces at 69.

Na and Japan’s Jinichiro Kozuma led Iron Heads with rounds of 69. Hatton, of England, paced Legion with a 68 as LIV alternate John Catlin stood in for Rahm over the weekend while Rahm dealt with “severe flu symptoms.”

The Iron Heads finished last in the regular-season standings but upset Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC and Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers GC (the defending champions) in match play Friday and Saturday to advance to the final.

Brewers pin hopes on Robert Gasser to rebound against Rockies

Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Robert Gasser (54) warms up before their game against the New York Mets Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Robert Gasser (54) warms up before their game against the New York Mets Wednesday, July 22, 2026 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The Milwaukee Brewers will look to bounce back behind left-hander Robert Gasser and even their three-game series on Saturday night against the visiting Colorado Rockies, who are within one victory of matching their win total for all of last season.

Gasser (2-4, 4.91 ERA) will oppose right-hander Ryan Feltner (3-4, 5.48).

Colorado won the series opener 5-2 on Friday behind Tomoyuki Sugano, who scattered six hits — allowing two runs on a pair of solo homers — in 5 1/3 innings to improve to 6-0 over his last seven starts.

Christian Yelich and Brice Turang had solo homers for the Brewers, who lost for just the second time following the All-Star break.

Milwaukee has a six-game lead over the second-place Chicago Cubs in the National League Central and is 1 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in the majors.

Gasser bounced back from a poor start and pitched effectively his last time out, allowing one run on three hits in five innings, but did not get a decision in a 3-1 win over Miami on Sunday.

Gasser was tagged for seven runs in three innings in the start before that, a 14-5 loss to Pittsburgh on July 12.

“Not a ton different physically, I just executed it better, especially early getting the fastball at the top of the zone,” Gasser said following his last start.

Opponents are batting .242 against Gasser, who will face the Rockies for the first time.

Prior to Friday’s game, the Brewers activated infielder David Hamilton from the injured list and designated infielder Braden Shewmake for assignment.

Hamilton, on the IL since July 7 with a strained left hamstring, was in the starting lineup at third base in the series opener, going hitless in three at-bats.

The Rockies improved to 42-63 with their win in the series opener, one victory shy of their win total from last season, when they finished 43-119, worst in the majors and 50 games behind the first-place Dodgers in the NL West.

TJ Rumfield remained hot for the Rockies with two hits in the opener after entering as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. Rumfield is batting .333 (21-for-63) with four doubles, a homer and eight RBI in 19 games in July.

Feltner has lost each of his last two starts, allowing 12 runs on 13 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings his last time out, giving up eight runs on seven hits with four walks in a 9-6 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday.

Feltner has given up 14 home runs in 65 2/3 innings, including three against the Reds.

“Today, I thought the command wasn’t real good at all,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer said following Feltner’s last start. “He wasn’t sharp. The walks hurt, and then obviously the homers. The off-speed pitches were hung. Just not a lot of command with the off-speed stuff today, and he got hurt for it.”

Feltner is 1-1 with a 2.67 ERA in six career starts vs. Milwaukee. He faced the Brewers in June, allowing one run on one hit in six innings, but did not get the decision a 9-7, 10-inning loss.

After meaty showing, Rangers' Jake Burger sets sights on M's

It was Burger Night at Globe Life Field.

No, there weren’t any specials at the concession stands. Just the Texas Rangers’ Jake Burger taking a bite out of the defending American League West champion Seattle Mariners.

Burger belted a two-run homer in the fourth inning and added a tiebreaking single in the sixth as the Rangers recorded a 5-4 victory over the visiting Mariners on Friday in the opener of a four-game series in Arlington, Texas.

Wyatt Langford also went deep for Texas, which extended its division lead to 1 1/2 games over the Mariners.

Saturday is scheduled to feature a matchup of right-handers in the Mariners’ Bryan Woo (7-6, 4.16 ERA) against the Rangers’ Nathan Eovaldi (9-8, 4.21).

Burger, who struck out with two runners on base to end an inning in a 4-2 loss Wednesday to the Chicago White Sox, was looking to atone.

“I felt like I let the team down a little bit on Wednesday at kind of pivotal time,” Burger said. “I’m going to go out there and give it my all every single day. But today was kind of like: ‘Hey, this is setting the tone for the rest of the year. So, stop feeling sorry for yourself. It’s time to go out there and compete.”

Rangers manager Skip Schumaker certainly appreciated it.

“He’s had a lot of clutch hits this year,” Schumaker said of Burger, who leads the team with 18 homers and 64 RBIs. “The home run was huge, but then they bring in a reliever (Eduard Bazardo) who gets it on the ground a lot and (Burger) gets it through the middle. He used the whole field. What can I say? Jake Burger is a winning player. He really is.”

The Mariners, who have scored the second fewest runs in the major leagues, finished with 10 hits a day after firing assistant hitting coach Bobby Magallanes. They were 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded seven on base.

“When you’re just not getting the results you want as a team, it’s very frustrating. I think everybody can sense that,” said Mariners right fielder Dominic Canzone, who had a two-run double in the fifth inning that tied the score at 3-all. “All we can do is keep grinding. We’re trying to figure out the answers, and they’re not always right in front of you. So just try to come back tomorrow and bring the fight again.”

Woo is 1-0 over his past three starts. He didn’t get a decision last Saturday against the visiting San Francisco Giants despite a quality start of two earned runs in six innings as it took 10 frames for Seattle to prevail 4-3.

Woo has struggled mightily on the road this season, going 1-6 with a 6.28 ERA.

He is 3-3 with a 3.88 ERA in nine career starts against the Rangers, including 1-1 this season. He lost 3-0 on April 8 in Arlington, despite giving up one earned run (three overall) over five innings. He beat the Rangers 5-2 on April 19 in Seattle with seven strong innings.

Eovaldi is coming off an 8-5 loss Sunday at Atlanta in which he allowed four runs in as many innings.

He’s 3-5 with a 5.16 ERA in 15 career starts against Seattle, including 1-1 this season. Eovaldi beat the Mariners 3-2 at home on April 7 with six quality innings and lost 7-3 in Seattle on April 18, when he gave up four runs (two earned) over five innings.

Dodgers sail along with MLB's best record; Mets could face another setback

Having clinched a winning road trip with a victory on Friday in New York, the Los Angeles Dodgers can win yet another series when they face the Mets on Saturday.

The two-time defending World Series champions own the best record in Major League Baseball at 66-38. The Dodgers, who lost five of seven heading into the All-Star break, have taken five of seven since play resumed after defeating the Mets 4-2 in the series opener.

As for the Mets, they may have more bad news from the Friday game than just their third loss in four games.

All-Star Juan Soto, who leads the National League in on-base percentage (.408) and on-base-plus slugging percentage (.947), could miss some time after leaving the game early due to left calf soreness. New York kept him out of the game on Wednesday in hopes that having two days off would alleviate that issue.

Soto was scheduled for an MRI and likely will be out of the lineup on Saturday in a contest that will pit Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto (10-6, 2.78 ERA) against Mets rookie Nolan McLean (7-6, 3.34). It will be an encore of the teams’ April 14 game in Los Angeles, when the pitchers squared off.

Both right-handers dominated, but neither earned a decision as the Dodgers won 2-1 following an eighth-inning single by Kyle Tucker off reliever Brooks Raley.

That’s been one of the fewer-than-expected bright spots this season for Tucker, signed by the Dodgers to a four-year, $240 million deal in the offseason. He is batting .240, which would be the lowest full-season average of his big-league career.

Tucker had another big moment on Friday as he hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to give the Dodgers a couple of insurance runs. He finished 2-for-3 with a walk in the win, giving him eight homers and 50 RBIs in 97 games. He hit 22 home runs and drove in 73 last season in 136 games for the Chicago Cubs.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tucker’s performance on Friday could signal a breakthrough.

“It’s coming,” he said. “It hasn’t been as consistent or as fast as we’d like, but he’s still going through it. He’s still working hard and to see some success tonight was a good thing for him.”

Yamamoto will be looking for his first win against the Mets. In two starts, he’s allowed five runs (four earned) on 11 hits and two walks in 13 2/3 innings. He struck out 16.

In the April clash against McLean, Yamamoto allowed just four hits and a walk in 7 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts and Yamamoto’s only blemish was a solo home run to Francisco Lindor.

McLean has four wins in his past six starts. In his April start against Los Angeles, he struck out eight in seven innings three months ago, allowing a run on two hits and two walks.

As for Soto, interim manager Andy Green said he needed to see the MRI results to determine whether he needs to make a short- or long-term decision about his lineuop.

“We’ll wait [until Saturday] and figure out what we’re dealing with,” Green told reporters after the game.

Should Soto miss multiple games, it could open up an opportunity for Luis Robert Jr. to become a bigger part of the offense. The center fielder returned to the team earlier this week after a herniated disc kept him off the field for nearly three months.

On Friday, Robert, who hit a career-high 38 home runs for the Chicago White Sox in 2023, hit his fourth home run of the season and second in three games.
