Alex Newhook, Canadiens level series vs. Sabres in Game 2
May 8, 2026; Buffalo, New York, USA; Montréal Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes (75) makes a blocker save during the second period against the Buffalo Sabres in game two of the second round of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs at KeyBank Center. Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn Images Alex Newhook posted his first two-goal postseason game for the Montreal Canadiens, who evened their Eastern Conference semifinal series with the host Buffalo Sabres on Friday thanks to a 5-1 victory in Game 2.
The Canadiens seized home-ice advantage in the best-of-seven set ahead of Game 3 in Montreal on Sunday.
Newhook now has three goals for the Habs this postseason, and Nick Suzuki added an empty-netter with 4:01 remaining to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games. Five of Montreal’s six defensemen got points as Mike Matheson and Alexandre Carrier netted their first playoff goals while Kaiden Guhle, Lane Hutson and Noah Dobson each registered an assist.
Canadiens goalie Jakub Dobes rebounded from a subpar Game 1 performance, making 27 saves in the victory.
Zach Benson recorded his third playoff goal for the Sabres, with assists from Conor Timmins and Josh Doan.
Buffalo goaltender Alex Lyon endured his worst game of the playoffs as he gave up four goals on 27 shots.
The Canadiens needed just 96 seconds to take the lead with Newhook in the slot tipping Guhle’s shot past Lyon.
Less than three minutes later, Matheson doubled the Habs’ lead. Phillip Danault won the faceoff in the offensive zone and the puck went back to the defenseman, who found a lane and ripped a shot from the blue line that went in off the post.
Newhook, who entered Friday with just three goals in 40 Stanley Cup playoff games, netted his second of the night with 15:13 left in the second period. On a 2-on-2 with Evans, Newhook found a way to get past Rasmus Dahlin and beat Lyon, who could not glide back before the puck got to Newhook.
Buffalo managed to score in the final minute of the second, with Benson at the post to redirect Timmins shot from the right circle.
The Canadiens regained momentum less than four minutes into the third with Carrier getting the puck in the defensive zone off a Tage Thompson turnover and converting it into an unassisted goal that secured the victory.

Lucas Herbert fires 63, extends lead to 6 at LIV Golf Virginia
May 8, 2026; Sterling, Virginia, USA; Lucas Herbert hits a drive during the second round of LIV Golf Virginia golf tournament at Trump National Golf Club. Mandatory Credit: John (Jack) Power-Imagn Images Australia’s Lucas Herbert bettered his stellar first round by a shot and opened up a six-shot gulf between him and the field at LIV Golf Virginia on Friday in Potomac Falls, Va.
Herbert’s 9-under-par 63 rocketed him to 17 under for the event at Trump National DC. Spaniard Sergio Garcia (67), at 11 under, is the only player within nine shots of Herbert, while Englishman Richard Bland had the second-best round of the day, a 66, to take third place at 7 under.
Herbert holed nine birdies and nine pars in his mistake-free trip around the course. He sank six birdies in a seven-hole stretch from Nos. 6-12, then ended his round birdie-birdie for good measure.
“It was kind of one of those days — probably 36 holes, two of those days — of things that probably just come easy in some respects,” Herbert said. “To be honest, I probably tried to enjoy it a little bit out there because I was able to in the moment see that that was happening and kind of just be able to sit back and appreciate it a little bit and understand this is pretty not normal. You don’t know how many times as a golfer you’re going to get to experience that kind of feeling.”
Herbert, 30, has won on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour and Asian Tour but is still seeking his first LIV title in his third year with the league.
Herbert said he spent time Thursday night with his wife and her family, not thinking about his first-round lead.
“It was kind of good to get away from the fact that I was sitting on a two-shot lead there and think about something else for a while,” he said. “I think we might be doing something pretty similar the way it worked out overnight.”
Herbert’s stellar score has helped the all-Australian Ripper GC build a six-shot lead over Crushers GC and Cleeks Golf Club in the team competition. Ripper (featuring Marc Leishman, Elvis Smylie and captain Cameron Smith) is 21 under.
Garcia got hot at the end of his round, birdieing Nos. 14, 16, 17 and 18. That included a 19-foot birdie putt followed by a 14-footer at the par-3 14th and 16th holes.
“I felt like, if I could shoot 3 under, it would be a really nice round and stuff. I managed to shoot 5, and I’m still far away from the lead,” Garcia said. “Yeah, it was a good day. Obviously tricky with the wind and everything and the greens getting firmer, but very, very happy with the way I handled it.”
Bland, 53, is vying for his first LIV victory like Herbert. He opened with three birdies in his first five holes (Nos. 8-12), then added birdies coming in at Nos. 2, 5 and 7 while staying bogey-free.
Bland said he’s winding down his playing career and content with where things stand.
“I kind of earmarked next year would probably be my last year of playing full-time, as I do right now. Then going forward, really kind of scattered, but play where I want to play.
“… So, yeah, semi-retirement, it’s getting a lot nearer — and that’s fine. I’m OK with that. I’ve had one helluva ride out here and the best decision I ever made.”
Bryson DeChambeau and Spanish star Jon Rahm each shot 70 Friday and are part of a tie for seventh at 5 under as they prepare for next week’s PGA Championship.

76ers' Joel Embiid back for Game 3; Knicks' OG Anunoby out
May 4, 2026; New York, New York, USA; Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (21) reacts during the first quarter of game one of the eastern conference semifinal round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-Imagn Images Philadelphia 76ers star center Joel Embiid returned to action for Friday’s Game 3 against the visiting New York Knicks after sitting out Game 2 of the Eastern Conference second-round series with right hip and right ankle injuries.
Embiid fueled Philadelphia’s first-round comeback over the Boston Celtics after missing the first three games due to an appendectomy on April 9. The 76ers won the final three games of that series with Embiid recording 34 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in Game 7.
Embiid had 14 points in a 137-98 loss to the host Knicks in Game 1 of this series before watching his teammates fall 108-102 in Game 2 on Wednesday as the Knicks took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven set.
Anunoby sustained a right hamstring strain in Game 2 when he had 24 points in 37 minutes. His status for Friday was unclear until New York coach Mike Brown said during his pregame press conference that Anunoby would sit out.
Anunoby has excelled in the postseason with averages of 21.4 points and 7.5 rebounds while shooting a stellar 61.9% from the field.

Atlanta finally enjoying winning run as Galaxy pay visit
May 2, 2026; Atlanta, Georgia, USA; Atlanta United midfielder Saba Lobjanidze (11) reacts to his goal against the CF Montréal in the first half at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mady Mertens-Imagn Images When Atlanta United host the Los Angeles Galaxy on Saturday evening, they will look to extend a three-match win streak across all competitions — their longest run since October 2024.
Atlanta (3-7-1, 10 points) received a brace from Saba Lobjanidze in a 3-1 win over CF Montreal on May 2, the Georgia international’s first goals since August 2025 against Atlas in the Leagues Cup. Emmanuel Latte Lath also scored for the first time since March 14.
“I think it’s very important, especially for (their) confidence,” Atlanta defender Stian Gregersen said. “That will help the group a lot, and you can see that there are more smiles on (their faces) also, so that’s fantastic.”
Atlanta midfielder Miguel Almiron (knee), seeking his first game action in nearly a month, is “day-to-day,” per Atlanta head coach Tata Martino.
“We’re continuing to monitor him, and we’ll decide if it’s best for him to play this weekend or wait another week,” Martino said through an interpreter.
Los Angeles (3-4-4, 13 points) went toe-to-toe with the Vancouver Whitecaps in its last outing, but Joseph Paintsil’s opener early in the second half was cancelled out by Mathias Laborda’s 81st-minute equalizer as the match finished in a 1-1 draw.
“I feel like they’ve been figuring out here in the early stages of the season who they are and how, in our league, with that group of players, they’re going to best, identity-wise, get results. And I think they’re starting to understand that a little bit,” Galaxy head coach Greg Vanney said of Atlanta.
Marco Reus (foot contusion) is questionable after leaving at halftime against the Whitecaps, Vanney said. Erik Thommy (thigh) is also questionable. Julian Aude (ankle) will miss his third straight match, but is “progressing fast,” Vanney added.
Atlanta hosts Galaxy for the first time since Aug. 3, 2019. After losing the first three meetings between the two clubs, LA has won the last two.
Atlanta’s Alexey Miranchuk had two assists against Montreal, giving him two goals and two assists in his last three matches across all competitions.
