Alex Fitzpatrick takes lead at Truist Championship

Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images England’s Alex Fitzpatrick shot 7-under-par 64 to take the lead through three rounds of the Truist Championship on Saturday in Charlotte.
He’s at 14-under 199 with a one-shot lead on Norway’s Kristoffer Reitan, who posted a bogey-free 64, and a two-shot edge on Cameron Young, who recorded a 63.
It was a day with lots of movement on the leaderboard at Quail Hollow Club, where last May the PGA Championship was contested.
Fitzpatrick was 6 under for the round through 12 holes, pulling into a tie for the lead. He birdied Nos. 12 and 15 before the momentum was interrupted with a bogey on the 16th as he had to hit out of a greenside bunker. He needed an 8-foot putt for birdie on the next hole.
Young, who last weekend won the Cadillac Championship in Miami with a wire-to-wire effort, had an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole by sinking a 28-foot putt. His lone bogey came on the final hole.
Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard (67) and South Korea’s Sunjae Im (70), the second-round leader, share fourth place at 10 under.
Justin Thomas (69), J.J. Spaun (65) and England’s Tommy Fleetwood (70) are tied for sixth at 9 under.
Among the top 10 on the leaderboard, only Fitzpatrick and Thomas have kept their scores below 70 for all three rounds.
The start of the third round was delayed because of morning storms. It marked the second time in three days that a round was off schedule because of weather.

Rays-Red Sox postponed, game to be made up July 17

The postponement was signaled approximately 15 minutes before scheduled first pitch at Fenway Park.
The contest will be made up at 1:35 p.m. ET on July 17 as part of a split doubleheader. It will mark both teams’ first game since the All-Star break.
The regularly scheduled game on July 17 is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
The Rays are pushing scheduled Saturday starter Nick Martinez (3-1, 1.71 ERA), a right-hander, back a day to start Sunday’s series finale. Boston might also push back left-hander Payton Tolle (1-1, 2.04) to Sunday.
The Red Sox and Rays split the first two games of what is now a three-game series.

Lionel Messi sets another record in Inter Miami win over Toronto FC

Messi also had two assists as Miami (6-2-4, 22 points) made sure it wouldn’t repeat last week’s stunning 4-3 home loss against Orlando City when it surrendered a 3-0 lead.
With his offensive output on the day, Messi added another accomplishment to his already long list, becoming the fastest MLS player to reach 100 goal contributions. He did so in just 64 games, besting the record previously held by Toronto legend Sebastian Giovinco, who needed 95 games to reach the feat.
Messi has 59 goals and 41 assists since joining Inter Miami late in the 2023 season.
Emilio Aristizabal scored a brace for Toronto (3-4-5, 14 points).
The Herons took a 1-0 lead when De Paul’s free kick from 25 yards out in the 44th minute ricocheted off the wall and his one-time right-footed shot hit the post and went in.
Suarez gave Miami a 2-0 advantage when he finished Messi’s pass with his left foot in the 56th minute. The Herons took advantage of the space created when Toronto forward Raheem Edwards remained down on the pitch.
In the 73rd minute, Miami went up 3-0 when Messi returned a pass to Reguilon who scored his first MLS goal.
Miami poured it on at 4-0 when De Paul connected with Messi in the middle of the box in the 75th minute.
Aristizabal trimmed Miami’s lead to 4-1 in the 82nd minute. Toronto trailed 4-2 on Aristizabal’s header on a Kobe Franklin pass in the 90th minute.
Early in the match, Toronto had its chances. Alonso Coello’s free kick from outside the box in the eighth minute skipped through the Miami wall, but Dayne St. Clair made the save.
In the next few minutes, Toronto continued to press as Malik Henry, Markus Cimermancic and Deandre Kerr had shots go wide of the target.
Miami’s offense started to build late in the first half when a Messi shot sizzled beyond the near post in the 38th minute.
Moments later, St. Clair made a diving punch save of a Daniel Salloi shot to preserve Miami’s 1-0 lead at halftime.
The 47th minute featured Luis Suarez forcing a turnover at midfield which set Messi up for a 2-on-1 run. Messi drew in both defenders and slipped a pass to Suarez on the wing, whose shot from inside the box was off target.

UCLA two-sport star Megan Grant breaks 31-year-old NCAA softball record

Grant was also a member of UCLA’s 2026 NCAA basketball championship team.
In the third inning of Saturday’s game against Nebraska, Grant hit a blast to deep left-center field to pass the previous record of 37, set in 1995 by Arizona’s Laura Espinoza. Grant set the record in 55 games, 17 fewer than Espinoza.
“Records are made to be broken,” Mike Candrea, who coached Espinoza at Arizona, told The Athletic. “It’s a pretty phenomenal record to be able to break, so tip my hat off.”
Nebraska defeated UCLA on Saturday, 7-2, to claim the Big Ten title.
On Friday against Wisconsin, in the semifinals of the Big Ten conference tournament, the Bruins reached 181 homers on the season, eclipsing the previous record of 161 that had stood since 2021.
Grant boosted that number to 182 with her record shot on Saturday.
“When I first came into college, I wanted to put myself in the books as one of the best, and I didn’t really know how to at the time, but throughout my career, just more and more has gone on, and to be able to do that, it’s just, it’s surreal,” Grant told reporters. “I am just so grateful for the opportunity I was blessed with, and just to follow the people that were before me. It’s just honor.”
Grant tied UCLA’s single-season record holder, Stacey Nuveman, with her 31st homer during a doubleheader against Cal on April 18 and surpassed her on April 24 against Washington.
Grant and Nuveman are the only Bruins to hit at least 80 career homers. Nuveman, whose career ended in 2002, is the program’s all-time leader with 90. Grant has 85.
Grant joins senior teammate Jordan Woolery (33 homers) as the first teammates in NCAA softball history to each hit 30-plus home runs in the same season.
The NCAA Division I Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, when UCLA (47-8) will find out its postseason seeding. The Bruins are seeking their first Women’s College World Series title since 2019 and their 13th in NCAA history.
Grant, Woolery and Taylor Tinsley all intend to continue their softball careers in the Athletes Unlimited Softball League this summer.
