It took blood and sweat to produce tears of joy as the short-handed U.S. men’s national team moved to the World Cup’s round of 16 with a gritty 2-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday in Santa Clara, Calif.

The USMNT’s first knockout-stage win in 24 years sets up a meeting with Belgium on Monday in Seattle with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.

Amid the postgame jubilation was the realization that leading scorer Folarin Balogun, who popped in his third goal of the tournament in the 45th minute, will miss the next match. The forward received a red card in the 64th minute on Wednesday, leaving the U.S. scrambling to defend a 1-0 lead.

They did and more when Malik Tillman scored from a free kick in the 82nd minute to seal the win. The result ended the United States’ 10-match losing streak to European teams and also marked the first time the U.S. won three matches in the same World Cup.

Tillman paused after the match to reflect on his wonder goal but also to look ahead to Belgium.

“We have to enjoy this moment now,” he said. “(Against Belgium), we want to go as fast possible, and it won’t be an easy game, but now we will analyze them, we will analyze our game and hopefully we keep going.”

In the post-match interview room, Tillman was in his socks with blood noticeable on the right sock by the big toe. He explained that in the second half, his right boot had been cut open and that shortly before the free kick he had to change footwear.

After a potential Christian Pulisic goal was disallowed in the 78th minute because he was offside, Tillman sent an overpowering shot up and over the wall from 21 yards to the upper left corner. The restart was set up when Sergino Dest drew a yellow card as Stjepan Radeljic grabbed his shirt.

“I know some guys doubted me to go over the wall, but I practiced this in training,” Tillman said. “You never know when it’s going to happen, but luckily today it happened and now I was ready for it. I was very confident, and now I’m happy it went in.”

Balogun gave the U.S. a 1-0 halftime lead with a wicked spin and shot from the top of the box. He followed a formula that worked in the first match against Paraguay when he had an early goal reversed because of an offside call before putting one on the scoreboard that stuck.

This time, he was offside in the 31st minute, but he would not be denied 14 minutes later.

The U.S. kept its defensive shape, pinning Bosnia and Herzegovina deep, resulting in a giveaway that led to the ball pinging off Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic.

Balogun ran onto the loose ball, stopped, turned to his left and fired in his third goal of the tournament.

A few minutes later in first-half stoppage time, Balogun pounded a shot off the crossbar from a pass by Sergino Dest.

The match took an ominous turn for the U.S. early in the second half when Balogun was issued a straight red card. When challenging for a header, his right foot landed on Muharemovic’s left ankle.

There was no foul called initially, but referee Raphael Claus reviewed the play and issued the red card.

When play resumed, the U.S. refused to back down while playing smart and composed for the most part.

“We had to dig deep for that one,” Pulisic said. “Obviously, I felt we put on such a good performance and didn’t deserve the red card. I mean, I didn’t see it, but it’s unfortunate. But for us to dig in deep like that and just to get another goal and to defend the way we did took a real team effort.”

Balogun became the first player to score and be red-carded in a World Cup knockout-phase match since France’s Zinedine Zidane tallied and was sent off in the 2006 championship match vs. Italy.

“For me, never was it a red card,” U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino said. “… (After that,) I thought that is a moment that we need to be a team. We need to show that we are a team. I could see in the eyes of the players as a coach we are ready to go and to fight, and that’s amazing.”

President Donald Trump, a frequent fan at major sporting competitions, was given $122,050 in tickets to 10 events last year, according to his annual filing released by the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on Wednesday.

As reported by Front Office Sports, the Secret Service spent almost $800,000 guarding Trump at four events. Trump’s trip to the 2025 Daytona 500 resulted in $561,842.63 of Secret Service expenses, with $335,000-plus of that amount spent on hotels.

The highest value of tickets Trump received in 2025 was $50,000 for 10 tickets to Super Bowl LIX, won by the Philadelphia Eagles over the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans. The tickets were a gift from New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson.

Among the other 2025 sporting events for which Trump reported ticket gifts:

–The U.S. Open tennis tournament, 10 tickets worth $25,000, given by tournament sponsor Rolex

–The FIFA Club World Cup, 10 tickets worth $15,000, given by FIFA president Gianni Infantino

–The Ryder Cup, 15 tickets worth $11,250, given by the PGA of America

–UFC events in Miami and Newark, N.J., 30 total tickets worth $6,750, given by UFC CEO Dana White

–New York Yankees vs. Detroit Tigers, 15 tickets worth $3,000, given by Yankees chairman Hal Steinbrenner

–Washington Commanders vs. Detroit Lions, 15 tickets worth $2,250, given by Commanders owner Josh Harris

This year, Trump attended a UFC card on the South Lawn of the White House. Trump, a close ally of Infantino, is expected to give out the trophy to the FIFA World Cup champion after the final on July 19 in East Rutherford, N.J.

Harry Kane's Leadership Could Finally End England's World Cup Drought

For the first time in a very long time, England have a World Cup star in Harry Kane who enjoys embracing the moment.

And sometimes, the World’s biggest sporting event is as simple as that.

Kane’s second-half brace to lead the Three Lions back from the brink of early elimination shouldn’t ease all the skepticism surrounding Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

This was a team that was significantly troubled by DR Congo during 90 minutes of climate-controlled football in Atlanta. The test will get much more acute in the next round at altitude against Mexico on Sunday night, a turnaround that provides too little time to truly acclimatize.

But in the modern mega event the World Cup has become, Kane’s comfort in the spotlight is irreplaceable and unlike nearly every other Great English hope before him.

Afterward, he even implored his team to follow his example.

“I think it’s easy when you’re one of the bigger nations to just let these moments slip by,” Kane said postmatch. “And no matter who you are, you have to enjoy going through in knockout football. So enjoy this moment.”

Curiously, the game’s inventors haven’t produced more attackers of Kane’s international prolificness.

Kane’s fourth and fifth goals of this tournament put him even with Brazilian legend Pele at 13 for his career. But they also put him three clear of Gary Lineker, England’s second all-time leading World Cup scorer, and eight above Geoff Hurst, the next-highest Three Lions striker and 1966 World Cup winner.

Germany have 11 players who have scored at least six World Cup goals. Brazil have 10. Argentina have five. Even famously defensive (and currently absent) Italy have four.

And for all those who want to wax poetic about tactics and systems, the game is often as simple as having players who can find the net when it matters. So what makes Lineker and Kane different? It might be their willingness to embrace environments outside the pinnacle of the English game.

Both Lineker and Kane played club football at teams outside England’s established perennial winners during their domestic careers. (Lineker eventually had a brief spell at Everton, who are nine-time league champions but also the second-most decorated club in Liverpool.) When they finally moved to blue bloods, they did so beyond their national borders, Lineker at FC Barcelona and Kane to Bayern Munich.

That willingness to embrace outsider environments has to make the atmosphere of a World Cup — in which the surroundings of the stadiums, the officials and the opponents are unfamiliar — easier to deal with. Because it’s a skill you’ve acquired. The problem is that leaving England means leaving arguably the best club league in the world. But this particular squad appears to get the advantage, at least relative to Three Lions squads of the past. Kane is one of four players who ply their club trade abroad, which, believe it or not, is an England World Cup record.

Lineker and Kane also possessed unusual openness to a media corps whose rift with its national team can be particularly fractious.

Lineker went on to be a long-time TV presenter after his playing career. The equally affable Kane could have a lengthy future there also, on the other side of the mixed zone velvet ropes.

The Three Lions won’t win the World Cup at a press conference. But embracing the spotlight sure as hell doesn’t hurt. Kane’s leadership makes this a group more resolved to at least try that, even if it doesn’t come naturally to all.

If they go on to end the world’s most famous 60-year title drought, don’t discount the role that will play.

Arrow McLaren is adding proven drivers Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist to its IndyCar team for the 2027 season, ESPN reported on Wednesday.

Dixon, who turns 46 on July 22, is a six-time IndyCar Series champion who has been with Chip Ganassi Racing since 2002. The New Zealander has won at least one race in each IndyCar season from 2005-25, including the 2008 Indianapolis 500.

He collected series overall titles in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2015, 2018 and 2020.

Dixon ranks 10th in the drivers’ standings with 211 points, trailing leader Alex Palou (374) of Spain by 163 points. He has one top-five finish and five top-10 finishes but no victories in 10 starts. His 59 career wins are the most among active drivers in the series.

Rosenqvist, 34, and his team since 2024, Meyer Shank Racing, announced last week that he was leaving at the end of the season without identifying the rival team.

The Swedish driver previously raced for Arrow McLaren from 2021-23.

Rosenqvist is sixth in the standings with 248 points, 126 behind Palou. Rosenqvist has one victory — the Indy 500 in the closest finish in its history — one pole, two top-five and four top-10 finishes this year.

The McLaren team’s current three drivers are Pato O’Ward, Christian Lundgaard and Nolan Siegel.

Denmark’s Lundgaard is fourth in the standings (297 points), Mexico’s O’Ward is fifth (257) and American Siegel is 21st (125). Lundgaard has two victories and seven top-10 finishes in 10 starts.
