Belgium beat Senegal on extra-time PK after VAR review

Belgium's Youri Tielemans celebrates scoring the winning goal against Senegal on July 1.Belgium’s Youri Tielemans celebrates scoring the winning goal against Senegal on July 1.

SEATTLE — Belgium followed a dramatic comeback late in regulation with a penalty kick goal from captain Youri Tielemans in the fifth minute of extra-time stoppage time to beat Senegal 3-2 in a dramatic World Cup round of 32 game on Wednesday.

With the game just minutes from heading to penalty kicks, Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara made a hard challenge in the penalty box on Tielemans. After not initially being called a foul, the play was sent for a VAR review.

The penalty kick was ultimately awarded to Tielemans, who converted it for his second goal of the game.

The matchup between Belgium and Senegal didn’t appear as though it would offer much drama until the Red Devils’ frantic comeback in the closing minutes of regulation.

Senegal’s frontline speed was the dominant theme of the first 85 minutes, with the Lions of Teranga mercilessly pressuring Belgium’s overwhelmed backline.

Sunderland midfielder Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the 25th minute, easily knocking a rebound past Belgium goaltender Thibaut Courtois. The goal was set up by a cross from Sadio Mane that saw Ismaila Sarr send a difficult header off the goalpost.

Sarr, who also sent an attempt off the goalpost in the 13th minute, finally got his goal in the 51st minute. The Crystal Palace forward took a brilliant long ball from Moussa Niakhate off his chest, shielded a defender and knocked a shot past a helpless Courtois.

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia, who had already brought on Romelu Lukaku at halftime, made a desperate attempt to flip the momentum by bringing off Jeremy Doku and Kevin De Bruyne in the 56th minute in favor of Nicolas Raskin and Dodi Lukebakio.

It didn’t appear to make much difference until Lukaku breathed life into the Red Devils with an 86th-minute goal.

Tielemans scored his first goal of the game just three minutes later when he fought through a pair of Senegal defenders to head a ball past goalkeeper Mory Diaw.

Belgium will now return to Seattle for a round of 16 match on July 6 against the winner of Wednesday night’s game between the United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

NOTES: De Bruyne made his 17th World Cup start for Belgium, but was unable to put either of his shots on target before being subbed off. … Belgium finished atop Group G, while Senegal claimed the last of eight third-place spots in the round of 32 after posting one win and two losses with a plus-two goal differential in Group I. … While Belgium used the same starting lineup from their group-stage finale, Senegal made three changes. Pathe Ciss, Iliman Ndiaye and Pape Gueye were in the starting XI with Abdoulaye Seck, Ibrahim Mbaye and Lamine Camara on the bench.

Hit in the back of the helmet with a throw on Thursday, Seattle Mariners All-Star center fielder Julio Rodriguez was placed on the seven-day concussion injured list on Friday.

Rodriguez, 25, left Thursday’s 1-0 home win over the Los Angeles Angels in the third inning, two innings after Nolan Schanuel’s throw hit Rodriguez directly in the back of the helmet. Rodriguez advanced to third on the play, then was checked on by manager Dan Wilson and head athletic trainer Kyle Torgerson. The three-time All-Star stayed in the game and played center field in the top of the second before heading to the clubhouse.

In a corresponding move, the Mariners selected the contract of utility man Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Tacoma. Seattle also transferred right-hander Cooper Criswell (right shoulder strain) to the 60-day injured list.

An All-Star in 2022, 2023 and 2025, Rodriguez is hitting .259 with 14 home runs and 40 RBIs in 87 games this season. The 2022 American League Rookie of the Year has a career batting average of .272 with 126 home runs and 381 RBIs in 677 games.

Mastrobuoni, 30, has played in eight games this season with Seattle, batting .217 with one RBI in 23 at-bats. In 202 games over parts of five seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and Mariners, he is a .230 hitter with two home runs and 22 RBIs.

George McNeill moves ahead by 2 in U.S. Senior Open debut

George McNeill watches his tee shot on the sixth hole during the final round of the 2026 James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational at The Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Florida.George McNeill watches his tee shot on the sixth hole during the final round of the 2026 James Hardie Pro Football Hall of Fame Invitational at The Old Course at Broken Sound Club in Boca Raton, Florida.

In his first year of eligibility at the U.S. Senior Open, George McNeill shot a 4-under-par 66 to take the 36-hole lead on Friday at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio.

McNeill posted the low round of the championship thus far and separated from the pack by birdieing two of his final four holes. At 6-under 134, he has earned a two-stroke lead over Irishman Padraig Harrington, who’s chasing his third U.S. Senior Open title in five years.

Harrington, like McNeill, improved on his first-round score by two shots with a 3-under 67. The defending champion will play in the final pairing with first-timer McNeill on Saturday.

“I don’t think I’m going to try to do anything different than I normally would at a tournament,” McNeill said.

McNeill turned 50 last October and hasn’t won in his first season on the PGA Tour Champions. He won twice on the PGA Tour, with his latest victory in 2012, and he openly acknowledged that his record at USGA championships isn’t the best either.

“My best (U.S. Open) finish, I think, was Oakmont in 2007. I think I finished — I made the cut on the number, and I think I finished last of the guys that made the cut,” McNeill said. “So nothing too exciting. All the other championships, I believe I missed the cut.

“Never really had a good feel for U.S. Opens. I don’t know if age is helping me. This Senior Open is obviously I’m doing OK so far.”

McNeill started his round on the back nine and birdied Nos. 12, 13, and 17. His only bogey came at the par-4 third, dropping him to 4 under. But a two-putt birdie at the par-5 sixth put him back ahead of Harrington again, and he drained a long birdie putt at the par-3 ninth to extend his lead.

Harrington’s round of four birdies and one bogey was enough to keep him near the top of the leaderboard. The World Golf Hall of Famer has been around the block enough to know what championship golf can throw at him.

“Look, as I said, I’d like to play well on the weekend, but if I don’t play well, I’m going to try to win this tournament another way. It’s just one of those things that with experience I know things don’t go your way at times when you’re leading, and things can feel like bad breaks,” Harrington said. “It doesn’t mean I have any perfect ability to deal with it. I’ve certainly seen all these situations. So I won’t be surprised by anything, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’m going to handle it that well either.”

Stewart Cink and South Korea’s Charlie Wi were tied for the first-round lead. After posting identical even-par 70s Friday, they are tied for third at 3 under along with Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez (68).

Cink won the first two majors of the season, the Senior PGA Championship and the Regions Tradition. He was 3 over for his round before birdieing Nos. 6, 7 and 9 to get back to even for the day.

“It was really not just the last hole, but I made significant putts on my last four holes. So that definitely helps the confidence,” Cink said. “Just seeing the ball go in the hole is huge in this game. I salvaged an OK round today when it was really pretty rough all around … Dug myself a little hole, but the last four were — it was really good to salvage those.”
