Jazz look for revenge vs. Timberwolves

“There are a couple games usually every season that are just kind of weird,” Jazz coach Will Hardy said. “You can’t quite put your finger on it.”
They were referring to Clarkson’s unusual shooting performance on Wednesday night against the Sacramento Kings: He missed his first 13 shots and finished with only two points.
“My teammates were like, ‘Keep shooting, keep shooting,’ ” Clarkson said. “I was like, ‘Bruh.’ “
Those descriptions could be used for the Jazz’s most recent game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, who come to Salt Lake City on Friday. Utah had a “bruh” outing when the two teams matched up in late January, with the Jazz going up by 15 points early, only to lose by 25 points at home.
“It’s a great win for us, especially on a back-to-back,” Minnesota coach Chris Finch said after that meeting. “Our energy was there, and we executed at a high level. That third quarter was the difference – our defense turned into offense.”
Minnesota doubled up Utah in that pivotal quarter, 44-22.
The weirdness of the night was punctuated when the seemingly loudest cheer of the night inside the Delta Center happened when a seldom-used reserve player from Minnesota subbed in for a brief appearance. This wasn’t just any T-Wolves end-of-the-bench player for Jazz fans. It was Utah legend Joe Ingles, who was a beloved player in the Beehive State for eight seasons (2014-22) before being traded as the team entered rebuild mode three years ago.
Utah fans chanted for him to enter the game – a request graciously fulfilled by Finch, whose team also features former Jazz players Rudy Gobert, Mike Conley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
“That’s fire. I mean, he’s a legend,” Clarkson said of Ingles. “All the guys, they come back and feel a lot of love, especially from the home crowd that we’ve got here. We’ve got the best fans, so I didn’t expect anything less. But Joe’s a legend, man, always and forever. He’s engraved in Utah culture and Utah basketball.”
Clarkson was more like himself in that Jan. 30 game, finishing with 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting. Two nights ago, he hit just 1 of 14 field goals while missing all eight 3-point attempts.
“You guys are going to ask about Jordan going 1-for-14,” Hardy said. “I don’t know – people get struck by lightning, too. I’ve never seen that in my life. I don’t think we’ll ever see it again.”
Another wild element in the loss to Sacramento: Jazz center Walker Kessler drained all 10 shots he attempted — though he did miss 2 of 7 free throws — en route to 25 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, two steals and zero turnovers in a sensational 34-minute performance.
Like their January game, the Timberwolves had to fly into Utah during a back-to-back set. Minnesota lost to the Los Angeles Lakers 111-102 on the second leg of their four-game road trip Thursday night.
Terrence Shannon Jr. led the team with 25 points, but Minnesota couldn’t overcome falling behind 33-17 after the first quarter or putting the Lakers on the free-throw line 46 times.
Friday’s game is one of three remaining between the Jazz and Timberwolves.

Report: Owners finalizing extension for Roger Goodell

Goodell’s current contract expires in March 2027. The extension would keep him place to oversee negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement with the players and new broadcasting deals, per the report.
Goodell, 67, will mark his 20th anniversary as the NFL boss this September.
The report said there is no known opposition to an extension, which could be announced as soon as the special Aug. 26 owners’ meeting in Atlanta where the proposed sale of the Seattle Seahawks is expected to be ratified. The owners also have a quarterly meeting scheduled for October in New York.
The NFL declined to comment on the report from Front Office Sports.
The league’s current CBA with the NFL Players Association runs through the 2030 season. The major sticking point to be ironed out in the near future is a potential 18-game regular season.
The current broadcasting rights deals signed in 2021 were valued at $110 billion over 11 years, but the NFL can opt out early.

Brooke Henderson announces engagement to Twins prospect

The pair’s post on Instagram Sunday came one week after Henderson nearly won the Evian Championship, losing in a playoff to Haeran Ryu of South Korea. Henderson officially became engaged two days later.
“Engaged! 7/14/26. The beginning of forever,” the post began. “We are beyond excited and blessed to announce our engagement with one another! God is so good for giving us each other!”
The couple started dating in March 2025 after meeting in Naples, Fla., where Henderson has a home.
Henderson, 28, has two major titles (2016 Women’s PGA Championship, 2022 Evian Championship) among her 14 wins on the LPGA Tour. The Canadian’s most recent victory came on home soil at the CPKC Women’s Open in August 2025 in Mississauga, Ontario.
Castro, 26, is a right-hander currently pitching for Triple-A St. Paul, where he is 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA in 10 appearances (four starts) with the Saints.

Gotham FC head coach taking 5-week parental leave

The NWSL club announced that lead assistant coach Shaun Harris will serve as acting coach until Amoros returns in early September.
“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Gotham FC for supporting us unconditionally while we were deciding to take this step,” Amoros said. “This is a personal decision for our family, but I also recognize the visibility that comes with my role. When fathers take parental leave, particularly men in leadership positions, it helps normalize an important principle: Caring for children is a shared responsibility between parents. I need to be there for my family.”
Amoros, 42, has coached Gotham since 2023 and guided the squad to league championships in 2023 and 2025. He was the 2023 NWSL Coach of the Year.
“We are proud to be a club that recognizes that creating an equitable environment requires supporting all parents,” said Yael Averbuch West, president of soccer operations for Gotham FC. “We appreciate that Juan is using his platform to reinforce that message. We have great confidence in Shaun and our entire technical staff to continue leading the team during this period, and we look forward to welcoming Juan back in September.”
Harris served as acting head coach for three matches earlier this season and has been with the club for three years.
