Rested Avalanche set sights on Jets

Colorado has played just two games in the past 10 days, and that extra time allowed forward Jonathan Drouin to heal from his upper-body injury. Drouin should be in the lineup when Colorado hosts the Winnipeg Jets in Denver on Tuesday night.
The Avalanche hosting a game on New Year’s Eve is a regular occurrence. They’ve been scheduled at home on this date every full season since the 2011-12 campaign, with the 2021 contest against Dallas being postponed.
Colorado is feeling confident after an inconsistent start to the season. The Avalanche have won four in a row and nine of their past 12, with eight of those nine wins coming with Scott Wedgewood or Mackenzie Blackwood in net.
Colorado has a stronger goaltending tandem since acquiring Wedgewood and Blackwood in separate deals and the lines are stronger with Artturi Lehkonen and Drouin back in the lineup.
Drouin has played just five games this season due to upper-body injuries but fully practiced on Monday. He has not played since Nov. 23.
“He adds a lot, especially to our power play,” Nathan MacKinnon said of Drouin. “More of a guy who can make plays from every position. He can play all five positions, and I think it’s important to have a guy like that, especially in the middle. He’ll bring a lot of speed and dynamic play to his line, too. He’s just a good player.”
MacKinnon leads the NHL in points (60), Mikko Rantanen is fourth in the league with 53 and Cale Makar leads all defensemen with 45.
Winnipeg hasn’t had the luxury of rest like the Avalanche. Tuesday night will be the third game in four nights for the Jets, including Monday’s 3-0 home win over the Nashville Predators.
Winnipeg has won four in a row and nine of its past 12 games (9-2-1).
The Jets don’t have the reigning MVP like Colorado’s MacKinnon but they do have talent, led by winger Kyle Connor’s 51 points and Mark Scheifele’s 44. Both players have 22 goals. The Jets also have one of the best goaltenders in the NHL in Connor Hellebuyck, who leads the league in goals-against average (2.00), save percentage (.930), wins (24) and shutouts (five).
Hellebuyck was in net for the past two games so it is likely backup Eric Comrie will be in net against the Avalanche.
No matter who is in the crease, Winnipeg is confident in its ability to win tight games, like its 1-0 victory over Colorado on Nov. 7. The Jets also can execute a rally, as they did when they fell behind Ottawa by two goals on Saturday night before scoring the final four of the game.
“I think that’s one of the things where this group has really grown over the last few years, is that as we get down two we don’t panic, we don’t start cheating, we don’t start trying to do things that are away from sort of our structure,” Jets coach Scott Arniel said.

Brooke Henderson announces engagement to Twins prospect

The pair’s post on Instagram Sunday came one week after Henderson nearly won the Evian Championship, losing in a playoff to Haeran Ryu of South Korea. Henderson officially became engaged two days later.
“Engaged! 7/14/26. The beginning of forever,” the post began. “We are beyond excited and blessed to announce our engagement with one another! God is so good for giving us each other!”
The couple started dating in March 2025 after meeting in Naples, Fla., where Henderson has a home.
Henderson, 28, has two major titles (2016 Women’s PGA Championship, 2022 Evian Championship) among her 14 wins on the LPGA Tour. The Canadian’s most recent victory came on home soil at the CPKC Women’s Open in August 2025 in Mississauga, Ontario.
Castro, 26, is a right-hander currently pitching for Triple-A St. Paul, where he is 2-1 with a 4.13 ERA in 10 appearances (four starts) with the Saints.

Gotham FC head coach taking 5-week parental leave

Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amoros began a five-week parental leave on Monday following the birth of his family’s second child.
The NWSL club announced that lead assistant coach Shaun Harris will serve as acting coach until Amoros returns in early September.
“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Gotham FC for supporting us unconditionally while we were deciding to take this step,” Amoros said. “This is a personal decision for our family, but I also recognize the visibility that comes with my role. When fathers take parental leave, particularly men in leadership positions, it helps normalize an important principle: Caring for children is a shared responsibility between parents. I need to be there for my family.”
Amoros, 42, has coached Gotham since 2023 and guided the squad to league championships in 2023 and 2025. He was the 2023 NWSL Coach of the Year.
“We are proud to be a club that recognizes that creating an equitable environment requires supporting all parents,” said Yael Averbuch West, president of soccer operations for Gotham FC. “We appreciate that Juan is using his platform to reinforce that message. We have great confidence in Shaun and our entire technical staff to continue leading the team during this period, and we look forward to welcoming Juan back in September.”
Harris served as acting head coach for three matches earlier this season and has been with the club for three years.

Open Championship winner Ryan Fox WDs from 3M Open

Fox vaulted from 56th in the Official World Golf Ranking to 22nd after capturing the Claret Jug over the weekend at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England.
Fox, 39, secured his first major title following birdies on four of the final six holes thanks to a series of terrific approach shots and clutch putts. The New Zealand native shot 2-under-par 68 on Sunday and 10-under 270 for the tournament.
Stefano Mazzoli was added to the field Monday after winning the Corales Puntacana Championship in just his third start on the PGA Tour. The 29-year-old Italian drained a 24-foot birdie putt on the final hole Sunday to win by one stroke in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
