Sixth-inning rally gives White Sox victory over Blue Jays
Apr 4, 2026; Chicago, Illinois, USA; Chicago White Sox first baseman Munetaka Murakami (5) celebrates with teammates in the dugout after hitting a two-run home run against the Toronto Blue Jays during the sixth inning at Rate Field. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images Munetaka Murakami and Colson Montgomery homered to key a go-ahead sixth-inning rally and Miguel Vargas had two hits as the host Chicago White Sox defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 on Saturday.
Chicago earned a series victory against the reigning American League champion Blue Jays, losers of four of five after winning three straight to start the season.
Seranthony Dominguez worked around a leadoff walk and pinch-hit single in the ninth to pick up his first save.
Murakami drove in three runs, including the first of the afternoon on an RBI sacrifice fly in the first inning. That staked left-hander Anthony Kay to an advantage before he entered the game.
Kay followed opener Grant Taylor, who retired the Blue Jays in order in the top of the first. Kay walked Kazuma Okamoto to begin his outing before settling in. Toronto threatened in the fourth inning, loading the bases with one out, but Kay escaped trouble by getting a pair of fly-ball outs.
The Blue Jays broke through with a pair of runs in the sixth, as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smacked his first home run of the season. Kay exited after retiring Okamoto on a groundout one batter later. He scattered two runs and three hits in 4 1/3 innings with two walks.
Chicago answered the Guerrero Jr. blast quickly, reaching left-hander Brendon Little (0-2) for three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Vargas led off with a double and Murakami followed with his first home run at Rate Field and fourth of the season. A former slugger in Japan’s Central League, Murakami signed a two-year, $34 million contract with the White Sox in December.
Montgomery homered two batters later for a 4-2 Chicago lead. The Blue Jays loaded the bases in the seventh with one out but scored just one run. Nathan Lukes flied into a sac fly double play, and Myles Straw scored before Chicago erased Tyler Heineman at third.
Heineman, the Blue Jays’ catcher, committed a throwing error in the eighth that allowed two runs to score for the final margin.
Chris Murphy (1-0) got the win, allowing one run and two hits in one inning of relief.
Toronto placed catcher Alejandro Kirk (left thumb fracture) on the 10-day injured list before the game.

All in the family: Jaquez siblings to reunite at women's title game
UCLA Bruins guard Gabriela Jaquez (11) speaks to members of the media during the NCAA Women’s Final Four media day at Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix on April 2, 2026. Miami Heat forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. will have a busy weekend travel schedule after he was excused by head coach Erik Spoelstra to watch his sister plan for a national championship on Sunday.
Jaquez, a UCLA alum, will travel to Phoenix to see his sister Gabriela play for the Bruins in the women’s championship game against South Carolina.
Jaquez is not expected to miss a Heat game, but his travel plans will be tight. The Heat play at home against Washington Wizards on Saturday then play on the road Tuesday against the Toronto Raptors.
That creates a 2,000-mile flight from Miami to Phoenix and a 1,900-mile flight from there to Toronto.
The elder Jaquez led UCLA to the men’s 2021 Final Four and was the 2023 Pac-12 Conference Player of the Year, while also earning second-team All-America honors that season. He was a first-round draft pick by the Heat in 2023.
Gabriela Jaquez is third on the Bruins with 13.3 points per game, and adds 5.4 rebounds with 2.0 assists. The senior has helped UCLA to a 36-1 record and a second consecutive Final Four appearance, while chasing the program’s first women’s basketball national title.
She scored 10 points with two assists and four rebounds in UCLA’s 51-44 national semifinal victory over Texas on Friday.

Ryan Hartman (2 goals) stays hot as Wild down Senators
Mar 19, 2026; Saint Paul, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Wild head coach John Hynes looks on behind the bench in the third period against the Chicago Blackhawks at Grand Casino Arena. Mandatory Credit: Matt Blewett-Imagn Images Ryan Hartman scored twice for the Minnesota Wild in a 4-1 win against the visiting Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon in Saint Paul, Minn.
Jonas Brodin and Jake Middleton also scored, Mats Zuccarello had two assists and Jesper Wallstedt made 33 saves for the Wild (43-21-12, 98 points), who have won two straight for the first time in a month. Minnesota clinched a playoff spot on Thursday.
Drake Batherson scored a late goal and Linus Ullmark made 19 saves for the Senators (39-27-10, 88 points), who entered the day in a four-way points tie for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.
Brodin was credited with the goal that gave the Wild a 1-0 lead at 9:45 of the first period.
Brodin took a shot from above the left faceoff circle off a rush. Ullmark made a pad save, but the rebound went off the skate of Ottawa defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo and into his own net.
The Wild extended their lead to 2-0 at 15:35 of the first after forcing a turnover by Senators defenseman Jordan Spence at his own blue line. That sprung a 2-on-1 rush and Hartman scored off the feed from Zuccarello.
The Senators outshot the Wild 14-8 in the first period, but still trailed by two entering the second.
Zuccarello set up the third goal as well, passing the puck from out of the corner to Hartman in the middle. He dragged the puck across the slot before shooting it past Ullmark from the left hash marks to make it 3-0 at 15:31 of the second.
It was Hartman’s sixth goal in the past four games.
Middleton made it 4-0 with a wrist shot from the left circle at 12:46 of the third.
Batherson prevented Wallstedt from notching his fifth shutout of the season when he batted in a rebound after falling to the ice in front of the crease to cut it to 4-1 at 16:43.
Batherson went to the locker room in discomfort after scoring the goal.
Ottawa defenseman Jake Sanderson returned after missing the previous 13 games with an upper-body injury and had three giveaways in a team-high 24:55.

Aug 16, 2025; San Francisco, California, USA; San Francisco Giants second baseman Tyler Fitzgerald (49) during the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays at Oracle Park. Mandatory Credit: Darren Yamashita-Imagn Images The Toronto Blue Jays acquired infielder Tyler Fitzgerald from the San Francisco Giants on Saturday for cash considerations.

The Blue Jays optioned Fitzgerald to Triple-A Buffalo.
Fitzgerald, 28, did not have a hit in 12 at-bats at Sacramento to start the season. In parts of three seasons with the Giants, he batted .252 with 21 home runs and 53 RBIs in 178 games. He was designated for assignment this week after the Giants acquired reliever Dylan Smith from the Detroit Tigers.
