NWSL roundup: Boston sets attendance mark but loses in league debut

Mandatory Credit: Natalie Reid-Imagn Images Boston Legacy FC set an NWSL attendance record for an inaugural game with 30,207 fans filling Gillette Stadium, but Gotham FC played spoiler by notching a 1-0 win over the expansion club Saturday afternoon in Foxborough, Mass.
Esther Gonzalez broke a scoreless draw in the 55th minute when teammate Lilly Reale sent a cross on the ground into the box, and Boston defender Bianca St-Georges accidentally backheeled it to the Gotham star for an easy strike.
Gonzalez had 13 goals last year for the reigning NWSL champion Gotham.
St-Georges later earned her second yellow card in the 77th minute, forcing the Legacy to play with 10 women the rest of the way.
Bay 2, Summit 1
Joelle Anderson’s tiebreaking goal capped off a wild 31 minutes and proved to be the game winner as host Bay FC spoiled the first game in Denver Summit FC history with a win in San Jose.
Alex Pfeiffer got the scoring going in the eighth minute to give Bay a 1-0 lead. Melissa Kossler evened it up in the 20th minute with Denver’s first goal but that momentum was quickly wiped away when Janine Sonis was shown a red card for violent conduct in the 27th minute, leaving the Summit short-handed the rest of the way.
Four minutes later, Pfeiffer struck again, this time dribbling through the Summit defense and finding Anderson just above the center of the box. Anderson immediately sent it to the goal and beat Abby Smith in the bottom-left corner.
Courage 2, Racing 1
Ashley Sanchez netted a brace, her second goal the difference in the game as North Carolina edged Racing Louisville FC in Cary, N.C.
Sanchez’s first goal came in the 29th minute, a right-footed shot off a cross from Payton Linnehan that beat Jordyn Bloomer. Sarah Weber answered in first-half stoppage time when Courage goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan’s clearing pass was instead corralled by Emma Sears just outside the box. Sears charged toward the goal then found Weber standing wide open in front of the net.
Sanchez answered in the 86th minute for the Courage when her ball she sent toward the net was instead immediately deflected by a Racing defender, sending the ball high into the air and over the head of a leaping Bloomer for the goal.
Current 2, Royals 1
Host Kansas City scored twice in the final 33 minutes, once off a back-heel pass and the other on an impressive individual effort, to take down Utah.
Tatumn Milazzo got the visitors on the board in the 35th minute with a header from a pass from Cloe Lacasse off a corner kick. Utah then stood tall on defense, but the Royals could not keep the Current out of the net for long.
Croix Bethune, playing her first game with Kansas City after two seasons with Washington, evened the match in the 57th minute when Kayla Sharples set found her in front of the net with a one-touch heel kick off a pass from just inside midfield.
Ally Sentnor then netted the winner in the 69th minute when she dribbled from just outside the top-left corner of the goal box to the middle of the penalty area, then sent a right-footed kick to the right of a diving Mia Justus and into the net.
Dash 1, Wave 0
Makenzy Robbe, who spent the previous four seasons with San Diego, scored in her first game against her former team and Houston weathered 18 minutes of total stoppage time to win on the road.
Robbe’s goal was itself in stoppage time, as she took a pass from Maggie Graham in the seventh minute of first-half stoppage time, then sent the ball across the goal box and past DiDi Haracic into the bottom-left corner of the net.
The Wave had 19 shots to the Dash’s five — and held a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal — but Houston goalie Jane Campbell made numerous big saves, including a leaping punch that sent a shot over the crossbar in the 63rd minute.

Orlando gets first win in first match with Martin Perelman as manager

Mandatory Credit: Mike Watters-Imagn Images Martin Ojeda scored the decisive goal in the 31st minute and Orlando City SC defeated visiting CF Montreal on Saturday night in Orlando’s first match since the departure of manager Oscar Pareja.
Duncan McGuire also scored early for Orlando (1-3-0, 3 points), which broke through three days after Pareja parted with the club by mutual consent three matches into the manager’s seventh season with the club. Martín Perelman is working as the interim manager.
Pareja guided the Lions to the MLS Cup Playoffs in all six of his previous campaigns after they failed to reach the postseason in any of their first five in MLS.
But before Saturday, Orlando had won only once in its last 14 matches dating back to last August.
Prince Owusu scored for the second time in as many games for Montreal (1-3-0, 3 points), which has two matches remaining in its extended, season-opening road trip.
The visitors outshot the hosts 22-16 but trailed 6-5 in efforts on target on a night the final score accurately reflected the quality of each side’s attacks.
Marco Pasalic helped create McGuire’s 19th-minute opening goal when he slalomed in from the right and unleashed a left-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area that deflected off multiple players in the box.
Ivan Angulo eventually reached the rebound and directed a low effort off the near left post. That rebound fell kindly to McGuire, who was able to tap it into an open net from close range.
Montreal leveled five minutes later on a straightforward goal from a corner kick.
Wiki Carmona, who scored twice in his side’s 3-0 win at the New York Red Bulls last week, served the ball to the back post where Owusu met it with a powerful header past goalkeeper Javier Otero from close range.
But Orlando went back in front following more promising play from Angulo. Initially, the wide man turned his defender at midfield, got down the left and then played a ball for McGuire further up the pitch.
The pass was slightly short, but Angulo followed the play and reached the loose ball following a defensive deflection, played a give-and-go with Pasalic into the left side of the penalty area, and then fed Ojeda for the finish from about 15 yards out.

Sabres post shootout win in chippy affair with Maple Leafs

Mandatory Credit: Timothy T. Ludwig-Imagn Images Alex Tuch scored the decisive goal of a shootout Saturday night and the Buffalo Sabres defeated the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-2.
The Sabres made two of their three shots in the shootout and the Maple Leafs misfired on both attempts.
Owen Power and Jack Quinn scored for the Sabres in regulation. Quinn also scored in the shootout for the Sabres, who have won nine of ten. Alex Lyon stopped 16 shots.
Dakota Joshua and Max Domi scored for the Maple Leafs, who have lost nine of ten. Joseph Woll made 31 saves and was the prime reason the game went to overtime.
Power started and finished the sequence that gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 2:01 of the first period. He lugged the puck out of the Sabres’ zone then moved into the slot to score on Zach Benson’s pass from behind the goal.
Lyon’s first stop of the game came on Wiliam Nylander’s breakaway at 5:15.
Joshua tied the game at 6:09 of the first with a blast from the slot after Buffalo defenseman Luke Schenn failed to clear the puck.
The Sabres continued to be careless with the puck and it allowed the Maple Leafs to generate chances during the middle part of a chippy first period. Toronto played with urgency in their first full game since a knee injury put Auston Matthews out for the season.
Domi, playing in his 800th game, gave Toronto the lead at 0:53 of the second period at the end of a 2-on-1 with William Nylander, who faked a shot from the right circle before passing.
Buffalo scored the tying goal on a power play at 11:21 of the second when Quinn’s shot from the left circle squeezed past Woll’s arm following Noah Ostlund’s no-look backhand pass. Michael Pezzetta was off for slashing. Buffalo had the better of the play for most of the second period but Woll was solid, making 11 saves.
The Sabres were dominant again for large stretches in the third period but failed to break through. Buffalo had a 10-2 edge in shots on goal in the final period.

Victor Wembanyama stars in return as Spurs hold off Hornets

Mandatory Credit: Daniel Dunn-Imagn Images Victor Wembanyama racked up 32 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists and four blocked shots in his return to lead the host San Antonio Spurs to a 115-102 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday as two of the hottest teams in the NBA clashed.
De’Aaron Fox added 17 points for the Spurs, with Stephon Castle adding 15 points with 10 assists. Keldon Johnson scored 13 points and Luke Kornet contributed 10 for San Antonio.
Miles Bridges led Charlotte with 22 points while Kon Knueppel scored 20, Coby White had 18 off the bench and LaMelo Ball added 17 for the Hornets, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.
The Spurs are 17-2 since the start of February, while the Hornets fell to 8-3 since Feb. 22.
The Spurs led by as many as 18 points in the second quarter and 13 at halftime before heading into the fourth quarter up 91-83. Bridges’ 3-pointer with 9:33 left brought Charlotte to within four before San Antonio reeled off the next 12 points to expand its advantage to 104-88 with 6:05 remaining.
The Hornets were unable to challenge down the stretch, with Wembanyama’s fifth 3-pointer of the game coming with 1:12 remaining to seal the victory and get San Antonio’s back on track after a loss on Thursday to Denver when Wembanyama was out with ankle soreness.
San Antonio used an 18-0 run, capped by two free throws by Barnes, in building an early 28-13 lead. The Hornets missed 13 consecutive shots during the Spurs’ surge before pulling within 31-24 after one quarter.
The Spurs were up 46-28 five minutes into the second quarter and finished the first half with an 8-0 run to take a 59-46 advantage into the break. Wembanyama had 18 points and eight rebounds before halftime for the Spurs while Fox added 10 points. Ball had 11 points for the Hornets in the first half.
Knueppel tried to shoot Charlotte back into the game in the third period, making three 3-pointers as part of his 17 points in the quarter as the Hornets cut San Antonio’s lead to 82-73.
