Fate Of Netflix's Tomb Raider Anime Has Already Been Decided

By Jonathan Klotz
| Published

In a surprisingly quick turnaround, Netflix has announced that Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is coming back for a second season. The news comes only two weeks after the first season premiered on the streaming service, making it clear that it’s the company’s latest animated hit, following in the footsteps of Castlevania and Arcane. There’s no release date yet for Season 2, but fans can rest easy knowing that it’s already in the works.

An Early Hit With Fans

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft is part of the rebooted timeline for the franchise, taking place after the latest game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Season 1 has Lara (voiced by Hayley Atwell) flying around the globe from Chile to China, into the ocean, and up mountains, trying to keep sacred stones from throwing off the balance of the world. Gorgeously animated by Powerhouse Animation, the same team behind Castlevania, Blood of Zeus, and the new Masters of the Universe, the series is already a hit with fans, and it’s been praised for capturing the franchise’s spirit.

Alongside Hayley Atwell, there are more recognizable stars, including Richard Armitage as the fanatical Charles, Nolan North as Lara’s mentor in a fun nod to Uncharted, Ming Na-Wen as an antiquities dealer, and The Boys Karen Fukuhara as her best friend, Sam. As of now, the only one announced as returning in Tomb Raider Season 2 is Fukuhara as Sam.

Another Globe-Trotting Adventure

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft

The plot of Tomb Raider Season 2 sounds, on the surface, similar to the first, with Lara caught up in another globe-trotting adventure. This time, she’s trying to uncover the mystery of a pair of African masks, and considering the franchise’s history, it’s not a spoiler to say that an ancient legend may turn out to be true. Moving the story to Africa makes sense after Season 1, which didn’t touch the continent, though when the Angelina Jolie sequel, Lara Croft and the Cradle of Life, went to Africa, it was so bad that it killed the franchise for years, so here’s hoping Season 2 pulls it off.

The Rediscovery Of Lara Croft

Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft comes amid a resurgence in popularity for the PlayStation icon, with the recent re-release of the original gaming trilogy reminding everyone why they fell in love with her adventures in the first place. A second collection, covering the alter games in the series, is in the works. A sequel to the 2018 reboot film starring Alicia Vikander has been in demand for years, but after the film was considered a disappointment at the box office, it seems increasingly unlikely.

For now, fans can be thrilled by Tomb Raider on Netflix, safe in the knowledge that it’s coming back for Season 2 and hasn’t been canceled yet. With a new season of Castlevania: Nocturne arriving soon, Arcane Season 2 arriving in November, and Devil May Cry debuting soon, it’s clear that the company has found a new vein of valuable IP to mine for years to come.

Best Mothers Day gifts: Show mom some love

Mother figures are the backbone of the world. Yours may be your biological mother, or maybe she’s your mother-in-law, your best friend’s mom, or simply someone whose motherly instinct has helped you through hard times.

Moms teach you the adulting necessities, give advice even if the problem is your fault, and above all, they put up with your shit and (almost) never complain.

The game plan here isn’t just to snag the last bouquet at CVS just so you’re not the kid who forgot Mother’s Day (but definitely also get flowers). And you don’t even need to spend a lot of money. (Peep our list of Mother’s Day gifts that cost less than $50. Want even more cheap gift ideas?

Skip the generic mugs and show your appreciation with a gift picked just for her: Whether it’s something to make a part of her life easier, something she’s mentioned wanting in passing, or simply something to make her feel like a damn queen, you can’t put a price on everything she’s done for you, but heartfelt gifts certainly help.

After all, they say “No matter how hard you try, you always end up like your mother.” But is that even a bad thing?
