Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Cale Makar scored twice, Gavin Brindley also had a goal, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-1 in Denver on Saturday night.
Mackenzie Blackwood turned away 14 shots and Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Necas had two assists each for Colorado, which bounced back from a disappointing home loss to Minnesota on Thursday night. The Avalanche have an NHL-best 87 points.
Connor Bedard scored and Spencer Knight made 32 saves for Chicago, which has lost eight of its last nine. The Blackhawks are averaging just 1.5 goals in those eight losses.
Chicago generated several scoring chances early in the third, including a Bedard slapshot on a power play that Blackwood stopped with a glove save, but the Avalanche got the go-ahead goal at 7:31.
Brindley, on just his fourth shift of the game, cleaned up Sam Malinski’s rebound and roofed a shot over Knight to give Colorado the lead.
Knight came off for an extra skater with 2:05 left and Makar sealed it with an empty-netter at 18:33
The Blackhawks nearly scored 35 seconds in when Blackwood got a glove on Jason Dickinson’s shot on a breakaway and it went off the crossbar.
Chicago did take a 1-0 lead on a power play later in the first period. Tyler Bertuzzi fed Bedard as he skated to the right circle, and the 20-year-old beat Blackwood with a shot high to the glove side at 6:31.
Chicago didn’t generate a lot of shots after Bedard’s goal, finishing the first period with four and not recording one in the second period until 8:39 into the frame. Knight kept the Blackhawks in the lead with some key saves before the Avalanche finally broke through at the end of their fourth power play.
As Oliver Moore’s tripping penalty expired, Necas sent the puck to MacKinnon in the corner as Makar drifted into the right circle. MacKinnon fed him with a saucer pass, and Makar’s wrister beat Knight inside the far post with 8.3 seconds left in the second period.

Jaylin Sellers powers Providence to sweep of Creighton
Feb 28, 2026; Omaha, Nebraska, USA; Providence Friars forward Oswin Erhunmwunse (55) attempts a shot against Creighton Bluejays guard Fedor Zugic (7) and guard Blake Harper (2) during the first half at CHI Health Center Omaha. Mandatory Credit: Steven Branscombe-Imagn Images Jaylin Sellers scored 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half and Jason Edwards added 18 points as the Providence Friars won their third straight game and swept the season series over the Creighton Bluejays with an 85-82 victory on Saturday afternoon in Omaha, Neb.
Ryan Mela had 11 points and six rebounds for Providence (14-15, 7-11 Big East Conference), which has won five of seven. Jamier Jones scored nine points, and Oswin Erhunmwunse just missed his sixth double-double of the season with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Josh Dix and Austin Swartz each scored 18 points to lead Creighton (14-16, 8-11), which lost for the eighth time in 10 games. The Bluejays have now dropped three in a row. Dix went 4 from 8 from beyond the arc to lead the team, and Swartz had seven rebounds.
Jasen Green had 12 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds, while Nik Graves, who shot just 1 for 12 from the field, went 8 for 10 from the foul line and contributed 10 points and six assists for Creighton.
Sellers, who was 0 for 7 from the field and scored a season-low four points in last month’s 93-88 victory over the Bluejays in Providence, shot 61.1% (11 for 18) from the field, including 62.5% (5 for 8) from beyond the arc this time around for the Friars.
Edwards, who’s second on the team and just behind Sellers in scoring with 17.6 points per game, missed last month’s Creighton contest. He scored 10 points in the first half and added another eight after the break in a balanced performance.
Providence controlled the majority of the first half, holding the lead for all but roughly two minutes. The Friars led by as much as eight points in the opening frame before Creighton started chipping away.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Hudson Greer and Dix evened the game at 28. Edwards’ driving layup, with 13 seconds remaining in the half, gave Providence a two-point advantage at the break.
A Mela floater with 1:11 left in the game gave Providence a 77-71 advantage. Dix made two free throws, and Swartz converted an and-1 to get the Bluejays within one, but Sellers provided the final margin with a driving layup with 15 seconds to play.
Swartz missed a three-point attempt to tie the game as time expired, giving Creighton two losses by a total of four points in four days.
Fedor Zugic, who averaged 12 points in three games since being inserted into the lineup, was held scoreless for the Bluejays.

Myles Colvin's big game leads Wake Forest past Syracuse
Feb 28, 2026; Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA; Wake Forest Demon Deacons guard Isaac Carr (7) passes the ball to forward Juke Harris (2) during the first half against the Syracuse Orange at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. Mandatory Credit: Jim Dedmon-Imagn Images Myles Colvin scored 32 points behind a blistering shooting effort as Wake Forest topped Syracuse 88-83 on Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Colvin had shot a combined 1 of 16 from the field — including 1 of 9 from long range — over the last two games, both losses. But he was on fire from the start in this one, making his first seven 3-pointers and finishing 9-of-12 from the field, 7-of-8 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the free-throw line.
Tre’Von Spillers contributed 16 points for Wake Forest (15-14, 6-10 Atlantic Coast Conference), while Juke Harris notched 13 points.
Donnie Freeman scored a career-high 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting for Syracuse (15-14, 6-10), which shot well from the field (51.9%), the 3-point arc (13 of 26) and the free-throw line (14 of 17) but still lost its third straight game.
Nate Kingz chipped in with 20 points for the Orange, while Naithan George had 13 points and 10 assists.
Wake Forest trailed by four points at halftime and faced the same deficit early in the second half when Kingz knocked down a 3-pointer to put Syracuse ahead 56-49.
The Orange led 62-58 with 11:33 left when Colvin and Harris made 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to tilt the scoreboard in favor of the Demon Deacons. Those outside shots sparked a 14-3 run which put Wake Forest ahead 72-65 with 7:37 left.
Spillers’ layup with 3:07 to play gave the Demon Deacons their largest lead, 82-72, marking the first and only time either team had a double-digit lead.
Syracuse quickly erased half that deficit, closing to within 82-77 on Freeman’s three-point play. Freeman’s drive to the rim with 1:07 left brought the Orange within 84-80. However, Cooper Schweiger grabbed an offensive rebound on Wake Forest’s next possession, scoring a putback layup to halt the visitors’ momentum.
With the game tied at 29-29, Syracuse scored eight straight points – the final five by George – and went on to lead 46-42 at intermission.
Freeman (15 points) and Kingz (14) combined for seven 3-pointers in the first half. As a team, the Orange were 10-of-18 from long distance (55.6%) in the first 20 minutes.
Colvin paced the Demon Deacons with 19 first-half points. He was 4-of-4 from outside the arc in the opening session.
