Bucks, Clippers still hoping to make playoff runs

Mandatory Credit: Jerome Miron-Imagn Images The Los Angeles Clippers will welcome an old friend back into town Monday when former head coach Doc Rivers and his current team, the Milwaukee Bucks, make a visit to Inglewood, Calif.
As the Clippers try to nail down a favorable spot in the Western Conference play-in tournament, the Bucks are making a last-gasp effort to become play-in eligible with three weeks remaining in the regular season.
Los Angeles (35-36) is heading home after ending a four-game losing streak with a 138-131 overtime victory on the road against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday. Darius Garland stepped up in his best game for the Clippers, scoring 41 points with 11 assists.
Garland, who has played in nine games for Los Angeles, including seven starts, is averaging 21.4 points with 7.0 assists for his new team after arriving in a trade-deadline deal from the Cleveland Cavaliers. James Harden was traded to Cleveland in the transaction.
Even with his production, Garland was just as pleased to see teammate Kawhi Leonard deliver 34 points on 12-of-22 shooting, including 5 of 9 from 3-point range.
“Yeah, it was pretty cool to see him go to work,” Garland said of Leonard, who scored 13 points in the third quarter when the Clippers outscored the Mavericks 37-27 as they rallied from a 12-point first-half deficit. “I just wanted him to get some catch-and-shoot opportunities, and he got a couple to get us going. Overall, it was a good team win.”
Los Angeles shot 56.7% from the floor and went 21 of 42 from 3-point range, including 9 of 19 in the second half and 4 of 6 in the decisive overtime period. Leonard scored seven points in OT.
The Bucks (29-41) lost six of seven games before pulling off a 108-105 road victory over the postseason-eligible Phoenix Suns on Saturday. Ryan Rollins scored 26 points with 10 rebounds, including four points in the final 23.8 seconds to seal the victory.
The Bucks, who are 7 1/2 games out of the final play-in spot, not only were playing without Giannis Antetokounmpo (knee) for the third consecutive game, they also lost Kyle Kuzma in the third quarter because of right Achilles tendon tightness. Kuzma finished with 20 points before departing.
Kuzma scored 17 points in the first half as Milwaukee scored 42 points in the second quarter as a team and rallied from a 13-point deficit to take a 57-52 lead at halftime.
“I just thought it was a team win; everybody pitched in,” Rivers said. “Kuzma had a fantastic first half and I thought (Rollins) was consistent. It was funny, Ryan started out in the beginning of the game struggling a little bit. We took him out, brought him back in and I thought he played terrifically.”
Rollins is scoring a career-best 16.9 points per game, while also reaching career highs in games played (68) and starts (61).
Monday’s game will be the first between the teams this season. They will also meet March 29 at Milwaukee.
The Bucks have won five of the last six games over the Clippers during the past three seasons, with the only loss coming in their first game at Los Angeles’ new arena last season.

Troy Terry's OT goal lifts Ducks, snaps Sabres' 4-game win streak

Beckett Sennecke, Chris Kreider and Jackson LaCombe each had a goal and an assist for the Ducks (39-27-4, 82 points), who have won three of their past four games. Ville Husso made 24 saves.
Zach Benson and Owen Power each had a goal and an assist, and Alex Lyon made 27 saves for the Sabres (44-20-7, 95 points), who had won four straight.
Down by two after two periods, Buffalo’s Jack Quinn narrowed it to 4-3 when he fired a snap shot from the top of the right circle that went far side with 15:20 left in the third.
Power’s point shot off a face-off deflected of an Anaheim player in front to tie it 4-4 at the 10:05 mark.
Benson then put Buffalo ahead 5-4 at 11:37 expired. Husso was at the left of the crease when Rasmus Dahlin (two assists) sent a backhand centering feed out front to Benson, who put it into the open net.
With Husso pulled for the extra attacker, Anaheim’s Mikael Granlund tied it 5-5 from the slot on the power play at 18:16.
Sennecke had put Anaheim ahead 3-2 at 2:35 of the second period. He took the puck at the Buffalo blue line and went unimpeded to the net before putting it past Lyon’s left skate.
Terry gathered a rebound off the right wall and brought it to the slot to beat Lyon with a backhand, pushing it to 4-2 at 15:40.
Alex Tuch gave Buffalo a 1-0 lead at 3:36 of the first period. Power collected the puck behind the net and sent a no-look backhand feed to Tuch, who quickly snapped it past Husso.
Kreider tied it 1-1 on the power play at 9:27 with a one-timer that went high glove side on Lyon.
LaCombe’s shot from the blue line through traffic on the power play made it 2-1 at 12:23.
Josh Doan tied it 2-2 off the rush at 17:14, taking a pass through the slot from Noah Ostlund and quickly roofing it short side.

Hyo Joo Kim never loses grip on lead, captures Fortinet Founders Cup

Kim became an eight-time winner on the LPGA Tour, including this event in 2015 in Phoenix, with a 1-over-par 73 for a total of 16-under 272 at Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club, which hosted the event for the first time.
The 30-year-old had led by two shots after the opening round, four through Friday’s play and five after three rounds.
Ranked No. 8 in the world, Kim saw her five-stroke lead evaporate after 10 holes. She bogeyed Nos. 2, 8, 12, 16 and 18 to make for a dramatic finish. She countered with birdies at Nos. 6, 7, 11 and 14.
“I don’t think I was necessarily shaken up or my emotions were all over the place,” Kim said through a translator. “I was just trying to keep my focus on my shots and what I was doing. So I think was just trying to keep and lock in on that.”
Kim hit nine of 14 fairways and 12 of 18 greens in regulation, taking 30 putts.
“I think just in the back nine my two par saves were probably the things I’m proudest about today,” Kim said. “Just because my shots weren’t playing as well.”
Korda, ranked No. 2 in the world, entered the day in second place and stayed there after firing a 3-under 69 for 15 under for the tournament.
She bookended birdies at Nos. 2 and 17 with birdies at Nos. 3, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 to tie for the lead at 17 under, then carded a bogey at No. 12.
Korda missed a 3-footer on No. 17 for a three-putt bogey to drop to 15 under, which provided Kim with a two-stroke cushion as they went to the 18th hole.
“The front nine was great,” Korda said. “Kind of battled a little bit more on the back nine. Wasn’t really kind of producing as much as I was on the front nine. Obviously, something like 17 stings, so it is what it is. It’s golf. It’s a quick turnaround. There is next week. So, just going to take all the positives.”
Korda hit 12 of 14 fairways and 14 of 18 greens in regulation while totaling 32 putts.
South Korea’s Jin Hee Im (69 on Sunday) and Sei Young Kim (67) tied for third at 11-under.
World No. 1 Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand shot 73 and tied for 14th at 8-under.

Kenyon Giles pours in 28 points as Wichita State rolls over Oklahoma State

Giles shot 8-of-16 from long range while four others finished in double figures. Karon Boyd and Michael Gray Jr. scored 13 points apiece, Dillon Battie added 12 points and 10 rebounds and Dre Kindell chipped in 11 for the Shockers (24-11), who are in the NIT for the 15th time in program history.
Christian Coleman’s double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds wasn’t enough for the Cowboys (20-15), who also got 19 points out of Kanye Clary.
Any thoughts of the Cowboys getting a boost from the return of three of their top players from a suspension in the opening round, including leading scorer Anthony Roy, didn’t pan out.
Roy, the team’s leading scorer, was limited to seven points, well below his average (17.2), Vyctorius Miller tallied eight points and Isaiah Coleman managed two.
Oklahoma State didn’t score in the 3:05 of the first half but took its first lead of the day at 47-46 on a layup by Coleman with 17:07 remaining.
Tied at 48-48, Giles hit a 3-pointer to ignite a 6-0 run as the Shockers pulled in front 54-48 with 14:40 left.
Battie’s layup at the 11:25 mark stretched the Wichita State lead to double digits at 61-51. Giles all but sealed the deal for the Shockers when he connected from 3-point range for the fifth time, extending the lead to 68-53 with 9:21 left.
The two teams were meeting in the NIT for the second year in a row after the Cowboys won last year’s matchup 89-79.
Giles did his best to make sure history didn’t repeat itself, drilling back-to-back 3-pointers in the span of 29 seconds to propel the Shockers to a 10-2 lead with 15:21 to go, the first of the two going down on a shot from the OSU logo.
The Cowboys did themselves no favors in trying to erase the deficit, missing eight consecutive shots from the floor before Benjamin Ahmed ended the drought to cut the Wichita State lead to 15-6 with 13:31 to play.
The Shockers held a lead of 24-10 midway through the first half but the Cowboys were only down 32-26 with 5:13 to go after Roy drilled a 3-pointer.
A 12-2 run for the Cowboys got them within 34-31 with 3:42 left but the Shockers weathered the storm and led 44-37 at the half thanks to a 3-pointer from Boyd with 14 seconds left.
