Brewers promote C prospect Jeferson Quero, place IB Andrew Vaughn on IL

Syndication: Journal SentinelMilwaukee Brewers catcher Jeferson Quero takes batting practice during spring training on February 17, 2025, at American Family Fields of Phoenix in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Milwaukee Brewers recalled top catching prospect Jeferson Quero and placed first baseman Andrew Vaughn on the 10-day injured list prior to Saturday’s game against the visiting Chicago White Sox.

Vaughn fractured the hamate bone in his left hand on Opening Day and will undergo surgery on Monday, according to the club. Vaughn is forecasted to miss four to six weeks.

“I think it happened in my first at-bat,” Vaughn said Saturday. “I went home that night and felt kind of fine. My hand was a little sore. I woke up in the middle of the night and it was barking. It was like, ‘Something’s not right.’ …

“I definitely was (surprised). Usually people say when it happens, right away it stings. I think it could have been the adrenaline of Opening Day. Then it hit me: Something is definitely wrong.”

Vaughn, who turns 28 on Friday, had an RBI single in the sixth inning of the 14-2 victory. He is beginning his first full season with the Brewers since being acquired from the White Sox last June. He is a .253 hitter with 86 homers and 340 RBIs in 675 career games since reaching the majors in 2021.

Vaughn is the second key Milwaukee player sidelined due to a broken left hand. Young star Jackson Chourio is on the IL stemming from being hit by a pitch on March 4 when he was playing in an exhibition game for Venezuela ahead of the World Baseball Classic.

Quero, 23, is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the Brewers’ No. 8 overall prospect.

With William Contreras and Gary Sanchez handling catching duties to start the season for Milwaukee, Quero was sent to Triple-A Nashville, where he played one game and had a walk in four plate appearances.

In six minor league seasons, the Venezuela native is a career .275 hitter with 39 home runs and 171 RBIs in 279 games. He played 58 games at Nashville last season and batted .255 with six home runs and 44 RBIs.

Quero missed all but one game of the 2024 minor league season following major shoulder surgery.

“It was a long road to get here, but everything that happened makes this moment more exciting,” Quero said prior to Saturday’s game.

Reds come through in 11th, beat Red Sox for first win of season

Syndication: The EnquirerCincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz (44) gestures after hitting solo home run in the fifth inning between the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

Dane Myers singled home automatic runner TJ Friedl from second base with the winning run to lead the Cincinnati Reds to a wild 6-5 win over the Boston Red Sox in 11 innings on Saturday in Cincinnati.

Sal Stewart homered and drove in two, Elly De La Cruz belted his first homer of 2026 and Matt McLain had three hits to lead the Reds to their first win of the season, which was loaded with high drama and controversy.

Cincinnati reliever Connor Phillips (1-0) struck out three and retired all five batters faced in the 10th and 11th for the win. Trevor Story lined into a double play to end the top of the 11th. Right-hander Justin Slaten (0-1) surrendered the game-winning hit to take Boston’s first loss.

With the Red Sox just one out from defeat, Wilyer Abreu homered down the right field line off Cincinnati closer Emilio Pagan in the ninth to tie the game, 5-5.

It was a busy and rough day for home plate umpire CB Bucknor, who had six of his calls overturned by the new ABS system. The Red Sox challenged three through the first two innings and lost twice, losing it for the rest of the game. The Reds won all five of their challenges through seven innings.

Then, with runners on first and second in the eighth, the Red Sox’s Trevor Story was called out on a check-swing strike three by Bucknor with no appeal to the first base umpire. Story and Boston manager Alex Cora argued vehemently and Cora was ejected.

Pagan recorded the controversial final out of the eighth before allowing the game-tying homer with two outs in the ninth.

Former Cincinnati right-hander Sonny Gray made his first start for Boston since being acquired in an offseason trade with St. Louis. He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, striking out five and walking one in four innings. Reds starter Brady Singer also lasted just four innings, giving up three runs on five hits, striking out five and walking two while throwing 74 pitches.

After being blanked on four hits in Thursday’s season opener, the Reds wasted no time breaking through against their former right-hander. Gray labored through a 35-pitch first inning.

The Reds made it 3-0 on an unearned run in the second. Ke’Bryan Hayes reached on a wide throw from shortstop Trevor Story. With two outs, McLain doubled Hayes home. Story atoned with a solo homer to left in the third. Sal Stewart’s first homer of the season to center made it 4-1 Cincinnati.

Pavel Zacha and Elias Lindholm each capped off two-goal performances with insurance markers late in the third period, leading the Boston Bruins to a 6-3 win over the visiting Minnesota Wild on Saturday.

Zacha’s first goal lifted him to the 25-goal mark for the first time in his career. Eleven of his 26 tallies have come in March alone.

Viktor Arvidsson logged a goal and an assist, Andrew Peeke also scored, and David Pastrnak dished out two assists to run his point streak to 12 consecutive games for Boston (41-24-8, 90 points), which is 5-1-2 in its last eight games.

Bruins goalie Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves.

Ryan Hartman and Mats Zuccarello paced Minnesota (41-21-12, 94 points) with a goal and an assist each. Kirill Kaprizov also lit the lamp, Quinn Hughes had two assists, and Filip Gustavsson stopped 25 shots.

The Bruins surged off the opening faceoff and needed just 1:01 to take a 1-0 lead. After Pastrnak forced a turnover and had a point-blank shot saved by Gustavsson, he extended the early shift and slipped a pass to Peeke in the right circle for a top-shelf goal.

Zacha doubled the Boston advantage with six minutes left in the first, finishing a 2-on-1 rush with Arvidsson by slotting home a one-timer from the right side.

Swayman made back-to-back saves on Zuccarello during a flurry in the opening minutes of the middle frame before Arvidsson made it a 3-0 game with 10:27 left. Pastrnak drove down the right wing and slipped a cross-ice pass through traffic to Arvidsson, who shot home a one-timer from the bottom of the opposite circle.

The visitors got on the scoreboard at 14:46, as Brock Faber jumpstarted the offense with a lead pass to Ryan Hartman, whose diagonal feed set up Kaprizov rushing down the wing for a high shot past Swayman’s shoulder.

Boston’s lead expanded back to three at 3:48 of the final frame. After winning a neutral-zone draw, Lindholm drove hard to the net and was wide open to score Lukas Reichel’s quick pass across the crease to make it 4-1.

In the waning seconds of Minnesota’s full two-minute 5-on-3 power play, Quinn Hughes dropped a pass back to Zuccarello, who stepped into the left circle and scored a wrister at 7:57.

At 13:44, Hartman batted in his own rebound in the slot to bring the Wild back into a one-goal game.

Swayman made a key stop on Brock Faber less than a minute after Hartman’s goal, then Zacha deflected in Casey Mittelstadt’s turnaround shot from above the circle to provide a cushion for the Bruins with 3:10 remaining.

Lindholm added an empty-netter in the final minute.

Igor Chernyshov scored his second goal of the game with 1:25 left in the third period to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 win against the Blue Jackets in Columbus.

Macklin Celebrini entered the zone on the rush and passed to the middle for Will Smith, who fed Chernyshov for a one-timer from the left face-off dot.

Celebrini had a goal and an assist for the Sharks (33-31-7, 73 points), who snapped a six-game losing streak (0-5-1) and remain in contention for a Western Conference wild card spot. Will Smith had two assists, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 22 saves.

Denton Mateychuk and Cole Sillinger scored for the Blue Jackets (38-24-11, 87 points), who have lost three of four but remain strong contenders for an Eastern Conference wild-card spot. Elvis Merzlikins made 33 saves.

Celebrini, who had gone six games without a goal, tied the score 2-2 with a power-play goal 57 seconds into the third period. Alexander Wennberg won the faceoff back to Dmitry Orlov at the point, and he passed across to Celebrini for the one-timer.

The Blue Jackets took a 1-0 lead just 31 seconds into the game. Mateychuk took a pass at the left point from Adam Fantilli, skated down into the left circle and beat Nedeljkovic with a wrist shot.

Chernyshov tied it 1-1 at 17:17. Chernyshov stole the puck at center ice, entered the offensive zone, passed to Smith and scored on a one-timer from the right circle off the return pass from Smith.

Sillinger gave the Blue Jackets a 2-1 lead at 12:09 of the second period. Ivan Provorov intercepted a San Jose clearing attempt, skated down into the left circle and fed across to Sillinger, who scored on a one-timer from the right circle.

Nedeljkovic made a right pad save to rob Kirill Marchenko in the slot at 13:03 of the third period.
