San Diego maintaining 2025 momentum entering St. Louis City clash

For San Diego FC, no Hirving Lozano is no problem at all.

The club, which set MLS expansion-club records for wins (19) and points (63) last year, had the most explosive 2026 season debut across the league, trampling Montreal 5-0 to carry some serious momentum into Sunday’s game against visiting St. Louis City SC.

Christopher McVey and Amahl Pellegrino tallied in the first half, and Onni Valakari, Marcus Ingvartsen and 18-year-old Right to Dream Academy graduate Bryan Zamble all scored after the break as San Diego left their Canadian opponent in the dust.

Danish national Anders Dreyer, last year’s MLS Newcomer of the Year, had two assists to open his 2026 league account.

“Overall, just really happy for the group,” coach Mikey Varas said. “At the same time, this is just one step in a long journey that we are going to have this year.”

Pellegrino added two assists for San Diego, which has already advanced to the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16. The club advanced over Pumas, thanks primarily to a 4-1 victory at Snapdragon Stadium in the first leg.

San Diego dominated possession (64.1%), doubled up Montreal in shots (12-6) and quadrupled its opponent in shots on goal (8-2).

“We stayed committed to the plan in terms of how we could create space and then attack it,’ Varas said.

The hot start has come without the aid of Lozano, the Mexican national and San Diego designated player, who had nine goals and 10 assists last season but is no longer expected to factor into the team’s future plans.

The club advanced to the Western Conference final in its debut campaign and still has that new-car smell.

St. Louis had that a few seasons ago after its own successful MLS debut. That hasn’t been the case in the past two seasons as the club has missed the postseason.

New coach Yoann Damet oversaw a dynamic home debut last week against Charlotte. St. Louis controlled possession and had an outsized advantage in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks, but settled for a 1-1 draw.

Marcel Hartel put St. Louis in front in the 60th minute, taking a feed from Simon Becher and beating Charlotte’s Kristijan Kahlina into the bottom-right corner.

“I think we need to celebrate those little moments,” Damet said. “Cello (Hartel) being the first on the scoreboard this season is a good sign. I love to see that. I’m happy for him.”

Pep Biel equalized for Charlotte 13 minutes later, leaving St. Louis hopeful but still unsatisfied.

“Offensively, I thought the buildup was good. I thought we were able to create some chances,” Damet said. “Could we have created more? Did we get into good areas? Those are the questions we need to answer. Again, it never stops. There is always stuff to work on.”

Third-seeded Daniil Medvedev won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Saturday when Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands was forced to withdraw due to a hamstring injury in the United Arab Emirates.

Griekspoor defeated another Russian, fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev, in straight sets in the semifinals on Friday but fought through the injury suffered in that match. He said after his victory that he would have retired from the match if he had lost the second set.

For Medvedev, this is his 23rd career title and second in Dubai (2023). This is the first time he has won a tournament for a second time.

He defeated top-seeded Felix Auger-Aliassime of Canada in the semifinal and didn’t drop a set in the tournament.

“Not how I want to win a final. Hoping the injury for (Griekspoor) is not too bad and wishing him a speedy recovery,” Medvedev wrote on X.

Germany’s Yannik Hanfmann upset top seed Francisco Cerundolo 6-3, 6-4 in Santiago, Chile, to advance to his first ATP Tour final in six years and be in position to win his first title on tour.

The unseeded Hanfmann, whose last final was in September 2020, won 79% (27 of 34) of his first-serve points while Cerundolo, who won the Buenos Aires title two weeks ago, was undone by 27 unforced errors.

Hanfmann, 34, will face second-seeded Luciano Darderi of Italy, who topped third-seeded Sebastian Baez of Argentina 6-4, 6-3 in one hour, 29 minutes. Darderi saved four of six break points while Baez was 3 of 7. Baez, the 2024 champion, actually hit more winners (15 to 13) and had fewer unforced errors (29 to 31) and double faults (four to five).

Hurricanes earn 5th straight win with clipping of Wings

Taylor Hall and Shayne Gostisbehere each finished with a goal and two assists as the Carolina Hurricanes extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday in Raleigh, N.C.

Frederik Andersen finished with 27 saves, while Jackson Blake, Sebastian Aho and Eric Robinson also scored as the Hurricanes extended their point streak to 12 games (9-0-3).

Simon Edvinsson and Patrick Kane scored for the visiting Red Wings. Cam Talbot made 31 saves in the loss.

Hall made no mistake with 5:55 remaining in the first period as he stormed in on a breakaway and made a slick backhand-to-forehand deke before placing the puck into the back of the net to make it 1-0 for the Hurricanes.

Carolina took advantage of the game’s first power play as Aho slid a low shot that bounced off the stick of a defender and into the back of the net with just 8 seconds remaining in the opening period.

Robinson made it 3-0 for the Hurricanes just under three minutes into the second period as he jammed his shot past an outstretched Talbot.

Talbot made his best save of the night with 9:36 remaining in the middle frame as he quickly slid across his crease to rob Logan Stankoven.

Edvinsson got the Red Wings on the scoreboard with a goal on a 4-on-4 with 1:34 remaining in the second period as the young defenseman took a pass from Alex DeBrincat and sent it into the top corner past Andersen.

Kane then made it a one-goal game just 47 seconds later as he ripped a shot over the shoulder of Andersen on the short side for his first goal in the past 15 games.

Gostisbehere played a quick give-and-go with Blake and then fired a shot past Talbot to retake a two-goal lead for Carolina 2:18 into the third period.

Blake then grabbed a goal of his own as he came down on a 2-on-1, looked off the pass and sent his shot into the far side of the net with 14:30 left in the third to make it 5-2.
