Simply making the WNBA 3-point contest wasn’t enough for Dallas Wings star Azzi Fudd. She made some history, too.

Fudd became the first rookie to win the 3-point event, catching fire in the championship round to defeat the Portland Fire’s Bridget Carleton 30-19 on Friday in Chicago.

The No. 1 pick in this year’s draft was the fourth rookie in history to compete in the contest. She made 20 of her 26 shots in the final round, with all but two of her final 10 shots going in.

“You say ‘only’ six shots, but I feel like that was a lot,” Fudd said after being told of her low number of misses. “But honestly, I was really nervous. I was excited.”

Fudd added, “It’s fun to do because — and I don’t want to sound cocky — but it’s easy to me, just the set shot. Take the ball from the rack. It really is muscle memory. It’s what I’ve been doing since I was young.”

She took home $60,000 for her win, getting $20,000 from the league and an extra $40,000 from Aflac and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association.

She advanced to the final with 24 points in the first round, second to Carleton’s 29.

While most of Fudd’s shots fell, Sabrina Ionescu’s final-round record of 37 points held up. Fudd is prepared to make a run at the mark in the future.

“If they’ll have me,” Fudd said. “I’d be honored to be here again. … That’s not up to me.”

But Fudd saved her best shooting for last, firing a shot across the bow of the greatest shooter of all time.

“Steph, if you’re listening, I’ve been asking for a rematch since high school,” Fudd said in challenging Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry to a shooting contest. “Maybe it’s our time to figure out a time and a place.”

The two of them faced off in a 3-point contest at Curry’s SC30 Select Camp in 2018 when Fudd was a high schooler. After beating all campers — boys and girls — Fudd got a shot at Curry but lost by four.

In the first contest Friday night, Team Washington downed Team Seattle 31-24 to win the Shooting Stars contest.

The four-team event featured three players on each squad — a WNBA legend, a current player in the league, and a high school player selected through the Nike EYBL youth basketball circuit.

The Washington squad of Hall of Famer Elena Delle Donne, current Mystics center Shakira Austin and high school player Jezelle “GG” Banks defeated the Seattle team of Hall of Famer Lauren Jackson, current Storm rookie Flau’Jae Johnson and high schooler Tatianna Griffin 31-24.

One of the biggest questions entering training camp for not only the Kansas City Chiefs but the entire NFL took a big step toward being answered on Friday.

Speaking with reporters less than a week before camp opens, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is cleared to fully participate in camp seven months after undergoing surgery to repair tears to the ACL and LCL in his left knee.

“Right now, he’s got clearance to practice and do all the different periods we have in this camp,” Reid said during his news conference in St. Joseph, Mo. “We’ll just take it day by day and see how he does. He’ll have plenty of eyes on him from coaches to trainers to doctors, but right now, he’s been cleared to go ahead and participate fully.”

When asked if Mahomes could be ready to play in the Chiefs’ season opener against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 14, Reid said, “I’m optimistic, and I know (Mahomes) is extremely optimistic,” before adding, “Let’s just see where we’re at and not make any predictions or anything else. Take it day by day and see where it goes.”

When it was his turn to speak, Mahomes said he actually got the news Wednesday from Dallas Cowboys team physician Dan Cooper, who performed the surgery on the quarterback in December.

“I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt, as far as strength and lifting (weights),” Mahomes said. “I feel amazing. … I’m excited just to be able to play football. I’ve been seeing cinder block walls rehabbing every single day in Kansas City. Now, to be on that practice field with my teammates, it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The two-time league MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP, who turns 31 on Sept. 17, said he will open camp wearing a knee brace, though he is not committing to keeping it on.

“I will start with it on just because I feel like still I can move and be myself with it,” Mahomes said. “I played with it in college, and then we’ll just see where we go from there.”

Mahomes sustained the injury in the closing minutes of Kansas City’s 16-13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 14, a result that eliminated the Chiefs from playoff contention.

Mahomes was in the midst of perhaps his worst season as a pro. He completed 62.7% of his passes for 3,587 yards, 22 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. The completion percentage, passing yards and touchdown passes were all career-low marks since he became a regular (though he could have avoided career-worst numbers in yards and touchdowns had he played the final three games of the regular season).

INDIANAPOLIS — With a performance just a hair short of perfection, Layne Riggs dominated the TSport 200 presented by Warn Industries and moved tantalizingly close to the regular-season championship in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series on Friday.

The driver of the No. 34 Front Row Motorsports Ford led 198 of 200 laps, swept both stages and took the checkered flag 1.148 seconds ahead of persistent runner-up Connor Mosack to claim his second straight victory at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park.

“I think it’s just a statement win,” Riggs said of his fifth triumph of the season and the 10th of his career. “What a truck! I was just on cruise control.”

As far as the series championship goes, Riggs pulled no punches.

“I think we’re the ones to beat, for sure,” he said.

Riggs’ only bobble of the race came on the Lap 72 restart after the first stage break. Choosing the preferred top lane for the restart, he spun the tires and allowed teammate Front Row teammate Chandler Smith to take the lead for two laps.

On Lap 74, however, Riggs made an emphatic pass of Smith, diving underneath Smith’s No. 38 truck entering Turn 1 and sliding up in front of his teammate in Turn 2. From that point on, Riggs maintained control, though Mosack was able to stay close in the closing laps.

Ty Majeski, a two-time winner at the 0.686-mile short track, finished third and remained solidly in sixth place in the Truck Series standings with two races left in the regular season.

Smith came home third, having clinched a berth in the postseason Chase — joining Riggs and Kaden Honeycutt — with a third-place run in Stage 1. Christian Eckes and Giovanni Ruggiero also added their names to the list of those who have clinched berths in the Chase.

Driving the same Ford F-150 he raced in last year’s IRP event, Riggs expanded his lead in the standings to 99 points over second-place Honeycutt, who pitted late for fresh tires and worked his way up to seventh by the end of the race.

With a solid sixth-place run, Stewart Friesen broke a tie with Tyler Ankrum (ninth Friday) for 10th in the standings, the last Chase-eligible position. With two races left to decide the issue, Friesen holds an eight-point advantage over the driver of the No. 18 McAnally-Hilgemann Chevrolet.

Daniel Hemric’s hold on a Chase spot suddenly became more tenuous when he spun in Turn 3 to cause the only caution of the night for an on-track incident. With no way to escape the wreck, Landen Lewis plowed into Hemric’s Chevy, eliminating both drivers from the race.

Hemric finished 34th, fell to ninth in the standings and leads Ankrum, the first driver below the current Chase cut line, by only 14 points.

Nick Sanchez finished fifth in the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet. Driving the No. 1 TRICON Garage Toyota, 18-year-old Gavan Boschele ran eighth in his Truck Series debut.

“I had a goal,” said Boschele, who will make his second start in the series Aug. 22 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. “I told myself I wanted to run top 10, and we did that. I can’t do without these guys. The No. 1 American Land Partners Toyota group helped me be really, really fast tonight.

“They did a really good job to get me everything I needed and make me comfortable. Everyone on this team was really solid, so I’m excited for the three more that I have left this year. We were really fast tonight.”

Friesen’s teammate and fellow modified driver Michael Christopher Jr. came home 10th in his third Truck Series outing.

The Truck Series races next on Aug. 14 at Richmond Raceway (FS1, NRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
